Duluth and Chicago reported reoeipts ofllrBUO """"'"

The corn market was weak because of
act 1 ve selling by caah houses, who were
hedging against large purchases In the
country. There was a good commission
house djtmand In evidence, but that buy
ing was Inadequate to sustain prices.
Weather conditions were quite favorable in
most sections for planting and for the
crops already planted and advices from
Iowa reported NO to per cent of the total
acreage already In the ground. The mar
ket closed weak. July opened a shade to

receipts were 72 cars, with 9 of contract

wheat, but soon weakened on realizing
by leading holders and continued weuk
the remainder of the day. Wet weather In
Iowa and Illinois was a bearish Influence.
July opened V-' to Sc higher at 47c to

Local receipts were 99 cars.
Provisions were weak on local selling

CATTLE Receipts of cattle at this point
were large for a Wednesday and in addi
tion to tnat Chicago waa reporting 24,14)
head, with heavy receipts at all other mar
ket points. Under tne Influence of the
big runs the market! were slow and dull
at all points, with a lower tendency to
values.
Beef steers constituted a large propor
tion of tne receipts, but among the cattle
offered there were a good many sliort
feds of not overly good quality. The mar-
I ket waa very alow in opening and was in
fact a drag from start 10 nnisn. Buyers
began bidding lower right from tha start
and the general trade could hardly be
described as otner tnan slow and iaQOuc
lower.
There waa aulte a scrlnkllng of cow

COTTON
NEW YORK. May Sj. The suit I
brought ajralnat the New York Cotton ex
change, with a view of affecting a refor
mation In Its methods, has been dismissed
by the refere upon technical grounds.
Thi dismissal, however, haa not te
ulted In any withdrawal of my charge
or deprived me of further legal resource
In the premises. The Issue Is Joined, but
not by any meana determined. I shall
continue, by every means within my
power, to fight for a Just and merchant
able contract In New Tork, and as long s
tha crop outlook continue aa extraordi
nary a It 1 at present and the Indicated
shortage In next year's production seem
to be a acute a at present, I con t Inn to ,
believe that higher price for cotton are
Justified.
I cannot but be amused by th various
rumors current with regard to my posi
tion In the market. I have heard today
alternately that I was heavily hort and
heavily long. A a matter of fact, I be
lieve that cotton 1 going r.lr;".er, and
very much higher, before spinner will
be able to secure from the crop now be
ing planted any reasonable proportion of
the cotton they require.
I shall publish my report, giving th
acreage and condition of the crop, on
Friday next. Aa far as I have been able
to digest the replies thus far received
the Indications are that It will-be an ex
tremely bullish document.
