For the week the receipts show a considerable gain over the previous week and a large gain over a . car ago. The large receipts have been the governing factor In the market. Under the Influence of large receipts of beef steers, both at this point as wrll a at other markets, prices broke sharply during the tlrst half of the week. The market on Monday was quoted 10o lower and again on Tuesday the same dccllno was recorded. Wednesday's market was still weaker. On Thursday prices recovered somewhat and the improvement was fully maintained on Ftlday. Thus at the close of the week beef steers are right nt 10i?jnFc lower than at the close of last we-.lt. What has been said regarding the market on beef steers would apply In most re spects to the cow and heifer markot. Dur ing the first half of the week prices con tinued downward, but steadied up durlnqr the latter part. At the close the general market Is safely loftl5c lower than at the close of the previous woek. "Southern mar kets are beginning to get a supply nf southwtstern grassers, which In the near future will cut a big figure on the market. While receipts have Vieen tho controlling feature of the fat cattle market, the weather has had most to do with La feeder market. With the corn market ad vancing under the influence of unfavorable weather, and with pastures very short and unpromising, the feeder trade this week came almost to a standstill. The large receipts the first of the week moved very slowly and prices broke 15tr?5c, the de cline being heaviest on weighty cattle lncking quality. Inferior stockers also suffered severely. The best sellers were the light stock cattle of good qualitv. Dur ing the latter part of the week the market took on a little more activity, the lower prices apparently stimulating buvlng, so that at the close of the week the yards are pretty well cleaned up. HOGS Medium weight and light hogs sold anywhere from 2H'Gc higher, cr mostly 5c higher for the better grades of light weights. While the market was a lltt,la slow to open It was fairly active when once under way and the bulk of the hogs of the above description, changed hands In good beason in the morning. Heavy and rough packing hegs on the other hand were slow sale all diiy at about Bteady prices. The bulk of all the hogs sold at $4.20416.20, whereaa yesterday mint of the hogs sold at 6.17V,ii.2-V. Good lights sold today as high as $6.40 as against 16.35 the top yesterday. The receipts this week show a very large gain over lant week and a year ago. The heavy runs gave buyer an advantage which they were not slow to take advan tug of, thus forcing values downward from dy to day. The week opened lower, and during the first four days showed a steady decline, the low point being very close to 2oc below the dene of the previous week. The strengthening up of ve.lues yesterday and today leaves the market for the week only lOiftloc lower that the close of the previous week. A feature of the trade and on that It would be well for shippers to thoroughly understand Is the discrimina tion ngalrst heavy packing hogs. At all market points packers are giving th prefer ence to the lighter weights end buying the rough heavy et bottom figures: No. A. Bh. Pr. Re ceipt of sheep have ehown a heavy falling off thla week as compared with last, but still the total has been very much larger thsji f,-r the corresponding week of a year ago as will b noted from the figure t head of column. Th market ha been In a good healthy condition ail th week, packer having been tree buyers of good kinds and It has been nu trouble to unload everything com ing forward that wculd answer to that description. Medium and unfinished kinds have been a little alow and weak on aonie days, but alill every tiling haa sold at prices entirely satisfactory to sellers. The market at the end of the week is fully steady with a week ago, with now and then a spot wher It looks It snytlilng, strong. All advices agree that the run of fed s'.ieep and lambs Is very rearly over for this esn. In fact most of the big ship pers expect to w;nd up their business for the year the coming week. While the market at this point has been In a good healthy condl kn sod ent rely satisfactory, the leeling in tn-' i.hs been weak and buyers have been trying very hard to break the market. The Chi cago Drovera Journal of yesterday In ex- f lalnlng the sheep trade at that point for he week said: "In ap.te of. the big reduc tion In suipllft this week puckers have dominated trade for the most purl, and prices showed weak to loo lower ran go than one week ago, the fat, handier weight showing aa much loss ks the heav ier kinds. Values for sheep showed mostly lf,c loss from the corresponding week of last year, when the market was a booming one and prices were raised to an egcep tionally high level." COTTON NEW YORK, May 19.-A growing real nation of the conditions whloh confront l.c world's cotton trade resulted Satur day In a wild market, prices having ad vanced Hhortly after th opening some 16 r 20 points. Toward the close heavy liquidation on the part nt local tradors, whose policy It la to close the week fret) of speculative commitments, caused a less) of most of the advance, but tho situation has not lost any of Its Inherent strength and stl I higher prices are expected tnls ara a few who will have th temerity to sell the market thort In' th face of a government report that will prob ably indicate the lowvst condition on record and may suggeat a crop of much under 12.OuO.flOO bales, and so far as the Im mediate prevent Is concerned the depletion of American supplies goes on apace. The stock of cotton at all the United States ports last evening was only 608.000 bale. Of this 150,o ba.es are in New York and confidently held In the expectation of much higher prices; 107.000 bales are on shipboard, not cleared, and at least 150.000 bales are unavailable fur the liquidation nf contract deliveries. There remains, therefore, hardly more than lOD.OOO bale of cotton at the United State port act ually avallab for the use of th trad. The quantity of cotton that 1 coming forward la dally decreasing and only come forward because tt I already disposed of. The reaction which the market 1 having as It reaches from day to day higher levels are Incident only to It healthy progress toward the figure It justifies br existing condltlona, which, personally, I believe to be at less 12 or 13 certs a pounds and probab y much higher, unless Ideal condi tions for the development of a crop, al ready seriously Injured, prevail uninter ruptedly from now to the end of the grow ing season.
