MACK REVEALS SOX'S POWFIl
Connie Saya Catcher SnlllTan Is the
Wlnnlnsr Director.
The manner In which the world's
champion White Sox have been winning
games has caused the base ball world to
sit up snd take notice and Incidentally ask:
"How do they do It T"
Almost every authority on base ball in
the country will concede that Jones has
one of the weakest hilling teams In the
big leagues, and the old uase ball saying,
"It takes hits to win games." has not ap
parently been relegated to the background.
It Is a great fielding team, to be sure,
but that will not get runs acroBs the plate.
Connie Mack, however, believes tlmt ho
has found the reason. This Is what Connie
has to say:
"I believe the secret lies In the Work of
Billy Sullivan, the catcher. He Is undoubedly i
the greatest catcher of the present time, i
and it Is the Inside workings of the teams, .
practically captained and pulled off hy hlin,
that prevents those teams that get ten and
twelve hits getting more than two runs. ,
The Sox have won the majority of their :
games by close ascores. but If they con- j
tlnue to keep up the gait they are going .
it will be an extremely hard matter for
n n v of tha tenuis In this leairue to get to
the front. And I think that Sully has more 1
to do with It than any other one player
on the team."
This is very good logic. A catcher can
do much during a game to keep the team
nlnvlnir if r put ball all the time or to allow ,
the team to go to pieces simply by a little
oversight. The Inside of the game Is
seldom seen and understood by the spec
tators, but It Is going on all of the time,
and the slips that come are mostly laid
at the feel of the catcher, for he Is the
man that Is In control of the team on this
Inside playing.
