today on Jamestown island, forty miles up
the James river, of the 300th anniverea.ry
of the landing there of the first permanent
English settlers under Sir Christopher New
part, John Smith and others, wsa held under
fair sklea and conditions In every way ans
plclous. The exercises on ths Island were directly
under the auspices of the Society for . tha
Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Jo
seph Bryan of Richmond, Va.. presMed
and the Invocation was offered by Bishop
Randolph of the diocese of southern Vir
ginia. Tha opening address was delivered
by Governor Bwanson of Virginia and Brit
ish Ambassador Bryce followed with an
address the subject of which was "Greet
ings from the Old World to the New."

Introduced Governor 8wanson and Mr.
Bryan Introduced Ambassador Bryce.
A choir composed of students from the
historic Williams and Mary college at
Williamsburg was In attendance, and
Bishop Gibson of the diocese of Virginia
and other clergy participated.
Large excursions were run to James
town Island early today, both from Nor
folk and Richmond, these carrying for the
most part the large company of disting
uished people who are to attend the cere
monies. Lady Grey, wife of Earl Grey of Canada,
Is with Ambassador Bryce.
The elaborate celebration was ushered In
by the firing of a salute of seventeen guns
from Fortress Monroe Incident to the ar
rival at Old Port Comfort at 4 16 a. m., of
General Baron Kurokl, his staff and party,
accompanied by General O. E. Wood as
official escort.
General Kurokl and his party were met
at the Old Port Comfort pier by General
Grant and Major Strong, the latter com
manding Fortress Mondoe.
Honor for Japanese.
All honors were accorded to the distin
guished Japanese and after breakfast
General Kurokl and party proceeded by
special boat to review the great fleet of
American and foreign warships in Hamp
ton Roads, after which they landed at the
Jamestown exposition grounds for the ex
ercises of the day, which included an ad
dress by President Harry EL George
Tucker of the Jamestown Exposition com
pany and, a parade and review of the
federal troops on the camp at the exopal
tlon, together with several thousand sailors
landed from the American and foreign war
ships In Hampton Roads, all being reviewed
by General Kuorkl, the Japanese vice ad
miral. Sir Gero I. Juln; the Italian duka
de Abruxxl, Generals Grant and Wood, Ad
miral Evans and other American and
foreign army and navy dignitaries. At noon
a aaiute of WO guns was fired In Hampton
Roads, commemorative of the landing of
the first English settlers on May 13, 1007.
Among ths features of the day will ba
races between crews from the American
and foreign warships. Oeneral Kurokl and
his party will later inspect Fortress Mon
roe and the festivities of the day will con
clude with a ball and dinner to be given
tonight by the Duke ds Abruxxl on the
Italian flagship Varex, the banquet to be
attended by all foreign and Amerlcsn dig
nitaries now In these waters.
The function will be one of the most
elaborate ever given aboard a warship.
Tonight there will be a great Illumina
tion of the warships In Hampton Roads,
with brlllant fire works from floats off the
exposition grounds and In close proximity
to the wan hips.
NEW LAKE STEAMER BURNED
City of Cleveland, Designed to Be
Finest Boat Afloat on Fresh
Water, Destroyed.
DETROIT. Msy ll.-The magnificent new
passenger steamer City of Cleveland, under
construction at the plant of the Detroit
Shipbuilding company, for the Detroit and
Cleveland Navigation company and de
signed to run between Detroit and Cleve
land, was swept by fir early today and la
a total loss except for us hull and ma
chinery. How much they have been dam
aged cannot be determined until the hull
Is pumped out and a careful examination
made. The loss, which falls upon the ship
building comiany, a branch of the Ameri
can Shipbuilding company. Is about $700,008
and is fairly well covered by Insurance.
The flra-broke out Just befors daylight In
some mysterious manner. There are ru
mors afloat that an Incendiary is sus
pected. The officials of the ship yard are at a loss
to explsin the fire, as there were two
watchmen on the steamer and another at
tho gate to the ship yard.
The Cleveland was launched at Wyan
dotte and was to have been turned over to
ths Detroit and Cleveland Navigation com
pany in June. It was designed to carry
4.500 passengers with sleeping accommoda
tions for l,6uo. Ths interior woodwork and
fittings were practically completed and the
machinery and boilers war Installed. The
flame had secured a good start before
they were discovered snd despite the effort
of two fireboats and all ths shore appara
tus which could work On the burning ship,
swept away everything inflamable on the
craft. Tons of water were poured into the

hull, which now lies at the Orleans street
dock partially submerged. Ths two wstch-
men on the steamer got ashore safely and
no one was Injured during the fire.
The City of Cleveland was intended to be
the finest aids wheel steamer on freeh water
and Its Interior woodwork, all of which Is
destroyed, was unusually beautiful and
lavish. It whole cost was Intended to be

The shipbuilding company will rebuild the
boat as rapidly as possible. It Is announced,

The argument In the matter of the com
pulsory purchase of the entire water works
system of Omaha by the city of
Omaha are being beard before Judge
W. H. Munger In the United Btstes
circuit court. . They began at 10
o'clock Monday morning and probably will
continue for several daye. The suit la
brought by the Omaha Water company tt
compel the city of Omaha to buy the entire
water worka system for the appraised
valuation as fixed by the board of ap
praisers, at over 3S.0tO.0o0 st Its sitting In
Omaha In ths summer of 1103.
The argument for the wster company wa
opened by Attorney Howard O. Mansfield
of New York, general counsel for the water
company, ITesldent T. C. Woodbury of
the water company and R. S. Hall, the
local attorney for the company, wer
present during the hearing.
The Interests of the water board and the
city are being looked after ,by special
counsel, John L. Webster and Carl C.
Wright. The arguments of Mr. Mansfield
are In effect that the board of appraisers
acting under the Instructions of the city
snd water board and the ordinance of
March. 1903. Included In Its estimate of
appraisement the entire system of the
aster plant then owned and operated by
the water company which Included tha
distributing systems of South Omaha,
Dundee, Florence and sll the property of
the water company lying within the limit
of the city of Omaha. The ordinance of
March, 19o3, contemplated the purchase of
the entire system without any segrega
tion of outlying distributing districts.
Denies Appraisement Excessive.
Mr. Mansfield also denied the appraise
ment was excessive or unlawful, but that
It represented a fair appraisement of the
value of the property including It going
value. The final report of the board of ap
praisers was made In July, 1906. Following
the report pf .the appraisers, ths water
company made a formal tender of the
water plant with the requisite deeds for
all the property, which was refused by the
water board and city of Omaha on tha
ground that the appraisement was exces
sive and unlawful and on tha further
ground that the purchase of the water
plant contemplated only such of the prop
erty as lay In the corporate limits bt
the city of Omaha.
It is this contention that the water
company now seeks to deny snd refut
on the ground that st the Initial meeting
of ths water board appraiser a, at which
were present City Attorney Wright and
others representing the city and water
company and that there wa a distinct un
derstanding, and It was ao expressed by
the late Governor Boyd, then president of
the board. "The city wants to buy the en
tire property If it is possible, and expect
to do It.'
It Is further held by the attorneys for
the water company that no action wa
taken then to modify or limit the ordinance
relative to the purchase of the entire sys
tem, nor did the water board prior to the
Institution of this suit Interpose any objec
tion or seek to an estoppel of the appraise
ment or purchase price as decided upon
by the board of appraisers.

the two years' course In the training school
of the Clarkson Memorial hospital, re
ceived their diplomas yesterday afternoon
in Trinity cathedral. A large audience
witnessed the Impressive oeremonles which
marked the graduation exercise. Tha

A meeting of the Clsrkson Memorial
Hospital association was he'.d preceding the
graduation In the chapel of the cathedral

posed of the Episcopal church women of
Nebraska and Is for the purpose of raising
