Receipts of cattle this week hsrs been about normal, the number arriving being about ths same as last week and a year ago. The quality of the cattle arriving Is very good, there being a considerable pro portion Tf very fair to tt od finished oef steers. Th market during th week has shown no very gTeat change excepting that the fatr to pretty good cattle hav shown an advance amounting generally to lOtflSe. Very little Improvement has been noticed on the best heavy cattle and prac tically no change whatever on the com mon and light weight steers. In other words, the Improvement has been limited to th 1,060 and 1.360-pound steers, such aa are selling around !5.o0(U& 36. The top pries paid during the week was ti.70. Receipts of 00 ws snd heifers hav been quite moderate all week, while the de mand has been quite brisk. The result I that the market ha been In a good healthy condition, ' with price showing mors or less firmness. At the close of th week ths market la generally quoted Knu'l&o I hleher. the advance belna moatlv on the good weight snd quality atuff. Light belf. rs have not been In very active demand very sctlve demand and In consequence they have not shown any appreciable advance. The market on feeders has not been characterised by any very great change this week Rteera hsvlnsr nilAlifr and fteah have been In the best demand and Kava' brought the best prices, as usual. Good light cattle, however, have been In better demand and the market la stronger on that kind. At the same time stock calves and common stock steer hav been dull and weak from start to finish. HOGS There wa quite a speculative de mand this morning and the market opened with considerable show of strength, some of the first sales being 64J7HC higher. Pack era, however, could not aee any reason for advancing price to uch an extent and the best that they were willing to do, even at the high point, was 6c higher than yes - terday'a market. They were slow to tnke hold, even at that 1 advance, and th mar- ket steadily eased off. closing alow and weak, some sales being no more than steady. Taking the market aa a whole. It might be quoted as Mrong to 5c higher than yesterday s general market. The bulk of the hos sold at t1.3MiG.40, with a top at 16 50. The test had been . ar rar.gcd In order to convince Prof. Bellew of Columbia university that the powder wouT3 do what it waa reported to. But Prof. Bellew did not appear. He sent word to Mr. Geyer that he did not care to take part In a test to which the reporters had been Invited. The result was that th only sped tar were dozen reporters, snd on expert, Charles Howard, a member of the Mechan ical Engineers' society and the Civil En gineers" society. Mr. Howard was much lmpressd by fne test and said that th powder appeared to do all that had been said of it by Mr. Oyer. The first step In the test was the mixing of coal and anhea. A pile consisting of two-thirds ashes and one-third coal was mixed thoroughly, water was poured upon this and then the powder, to ths proportion of tablespoonful of powder to on gallon of water waa thrown on and stirred thor oughly. Two or three boilers were then hut down nd several shoveisful of th mixture wer thrown Into the furnac of the third boiler. The steam pressure at that time wa seventy-five pounds The mixture was thrown In at 4 o'clock. Seven minutes later th furnace door was opened. The fuel wn burning briskly. w hite flame appearing over the coals. This flame 1 much lighter In color than th flam from th usual anthracite coal. In hi.lf an hour the steam pressure stood th ntne-seyenty-flve pounds-rth on boiler doing the work that the three had done be fore. The hotel engineer ald tht this would not have been possible with porn anthracite coal. ' An hour passed.
