day was highly excited and exceedingly
strong, advancing mora than 8o In soma

ness on the exchange was In the heaviest
volume known for a long; time and the
wires of brokera were so busy throughout

were lOo to 820 higher.
From all appearances the country at large
was of the opinion that the crop of winter
wheat will be this year far short of that
of 1908. Before the opening of the market
orders to buy were stacked up In the brok
ers' offloes and from the nrst sound of the
gong until tho close of the session there
was a constant rush of buying orders.
Local traders were Inclined to sell, but the
country outside of Chicago, encouraged wlrh
the rise of the last week, bought wheat
constantly. At times there were slight re
cessions in the upward movement of prices
- on heavy realizing sales. At one time the
market was forced back T but the ef
forts of the shorts and local traders were
of no avail against the flood of buying or
ders that came from all parts of the coun
try. The market started up again and
closed strong and near the nljrh market,
with the buying demand apparently still
Unsatisfied. The specific causes of the
strength shown In today's market were a
strong market at Liverpool, the continued
cold weather In the west and northwest
of this country, which, It Is believed, will
seriously damage the winter wheat crop.

a&'io and 91440 and closed strong and
active at 9141 :lo. Primary receipts were
4lti.O0O bu., against STS.0U0 bu. for the same
day last year. Minneapolis, Duluth and
Chicago reported receipts of 6J cars,
against 627 cars last week and 168 cars a
year ago.
The corn market waa strong and active
all day. Local receipts were small, but the
tthlef bullish factor waa the SLrength of
wheat, which carried all other grain with
It. Efforts were made at times by bears
to resist the advance In prices, but the
setbacks were only slight and lasted but
a brief time. The market closed strong and
with an excellent demand. July corn
opened Vflv-c higher at 60N0 to 6CAc sold
between 6Sc and 51SC and closed l4o
lilghrr at i14c. the high point for the day.
Local receipts were i-1 cars, with 40 cars
of contract grade.
The oata market was strong and active
and followed the lead of wheat. The gov
ernment crop report issued yesterday wss
taken, by many traders to Indicate that
the crop by June 1 will show a deterioration
from the condition on May 1 and much of
the buying was baaed upon misbelief. Trad
ing waa very large. Cold weather In the
northwest was also a strengthening factor.

and closed 4k"iTkc higher at Uc. Local
receipts were 228 cars.
Ths boom in the grsin markets was re
flected In provisions and prices sdvanced
throughout the day. with pork very strong.

The sheep market Is In rather peculiar
condition at the present time. All reports
nirree that country supplies are being rap
Idly cut down, but at the same time price'
are so high that the tendency of the mar
ket Is on the side or dullness an.l weak
ness. The week opened out stronger, bu
packers at all points were very bearish In
their views and Inclined to pound vsluc
wherever the opportunity was presented
The result has been that while the Ix-fi
grartes have sold at about steady pries
others hsve dropped off Hi1Fc. with somi
quoting It mors than that off. riuvers ar"
apparently paying the prices under proti-m
end the only thing that hns prevented t
sharp decline has been the sniallnes t'
receipts, both here and at other market
points.
The Chlcaejo market on sheep was quoted
yesterday as weak to We lower than one
week ago, with the undertone to the mar
ket quite feeble and with Sellers congratu
lating themselves that the decline had
been no greater, when packers have been
using every effort to gel their supplies on
a much lower basis.
