From all appearances the country at large
was of the opinion that the crop of winter
wheat will be this year far short of that
of 1908. Before the opening of the market
orders to buy were stacked up In the brok
ers' offloes and from the nrst sound of the
gong until tho close of the session there
was a constant rush of buying orders.
Local traders were Inclined to sell, but the
country outside of Chicago, encouraged wlrh
the rise of the last week, bought wheat
constantly. At times there were slight re
cessions in the upward movement of prices
- on heavy realizing sales. At one time the
market was forced back T but the ef
forts of the shorts and local traders were
of no avail against the flood of buying or
ders that came from all parts of the coun
try. The market started up again and
closed strong and near the nljrh market,
with the buying demand apparently still
Unsatisfied. The specific causes of the
strength shown In today's market were a
strong market at Liverpool, the continued
cold weather In the west and northwest
of this country, which, It Is believed, will
seriously damage the winter wheat crop.

The money market has been stronger,
since Thursday, owing' to the announce

and the supposition that other offerings
by railroad companies- are Imminent.
Rumors persisted of an Intended bond Issue
by the Rending and the pressure on that
stock depressed the whole raivrkct. Ameri

sure. The strength of Union Paciflo was
attributed to a more favorable view of
the financial rlan from the- standpoint of
advantage to the company as distinguished

Is the usual Saturday's condition.

about the same as last week and a year
ago. The quality of ths cattle arriving Is

light cattle, however, have been In better
demand and ths msrket Is stronger on
that kind. At the same time stork calves
arid common stock steers have been dull
and weak from start to fliitnh.
HOGS-There was quite a speculative de
rmoid this morrlng and the market oenrd
with ooimlderalilM show of strength, some
of the first Siles being hlsher. Pack
ers, however, rould n't see any reason for
advai.cmg prices to such an extent, and
ths beat that they were willing to do, even
at ths high point, was c higher than yes
terday's market. Tfwy were slnw to take
hold, even at that advance, anl the mar
ket steadily eased off, closing slow and
weak, some sales being no more than
steady. Taking the market as a whole, It
might be quoted as Htroug to 5c higher
than yesterday's general market. The bulk
of the hogs sold at t4.3Mi6.40, with a top
at JK.50. Yesterday the most nf the hogs
brought ii.3ii.374. with n top at
It would be well for shippers to thoroughly
understand that heavy loads of packing
sows are being discriminated against anil
are selling at the bottom of the market.
Today It was hard work In some cases to
get even steady prices for hogs of that
description.
The receipts of hogs this week, while
about on a par with a year ago, have not
been as heavy aa last week. During tin
first four days there was comparatively
little change in vulues. hos rolling on nn
average in very nearly the same notches,
or not more than 2Sc apart on any dav.
With FYlday values took an upward turn
and the strength nf the market tort n
carries values to ths highest point touched
since April 27.
SHEBP There were not enough sheep
here this morning to cut any Imtire oi.
the market, but what few there were sold
at very satisfactory prices.
The receipts this week have been quit
liberal for this time of the year, ihnwln
however, very little change as compared
with last week or a year go.
The sheep market Is In rather peculiar
condition at the present time. All reports
nirree that country supplies are being rap
Idly cut down, but at the same time price'
are so high that the tendency of the mar
ket Is on the side or dullness an.l weak
ness. The week opened out stronger, bu
packers at all points were very bearish In
their views and Inclined to pound vsluc
wherever the opportunity was presented
The result has been that while the Ix-fi
grartes have sold at about steady pries
others hsve dropped off Hi1Fc. with somi
quoting It mors than that off. riuvers ar"
apparently paying the prices under proti-m
end the only thing that hns prevented t
sharp decline has been the sniallnes t'
receipts, both here and at other market
points.
The Chlcaejo market on sheep was quoted
yesterday as weak to We lower than one
week ago, with the undertone to the mar
ket quite feeble and with Sellers congratu
lating themselves that the decline had
been no greater, when packers have been
using every effort to gel their supplies on
a much lower basis.
