More business was done during the first hour of today's session of the stock market than in tne same time for many days past. Some of the features of tne movement had com menced to arouse distrust by that time and there was a relapse Into dullness and uncertain fluctuations. Many stocks were active during the first hour that have been unresponsive to the recent attempts to re vive speculative Interest and the whole market took on an appearance of breadth and volume that has been conspicuously lacking ln recant operations. This s-rv;d aa an answer to criticisms of ytsterday s deallr.rs tiat they were practlcully con fined "af 1 uton Pacific. Hut the fact be came .,ldent In a short time that this di version of speculative activity was being taken advantage of to market holdings of t'nlon Pacific Itself. It was this that checked the upward movement and Induced the subsequet reaction, thus serving to re- affirm tVt .imln.n... nf 1 'nlun Pui.ldn In the Dresent market. ' The heavy tone of 1'nlted States Steel was a dntg on the market also. There was no expectation of sn Incrtase In the div idend at the meeting to be held later In the day, but all Interest centered on the showing of unfilled orders on hand on March a. That these should exceed the record figures reported on December 31 was scarcely hoped, owing to the seasonable drawbacks of the spring quarter In the trade. But speculatora feared that the showing of a decrease, however explained, might be seized upon to point an argu ment that trade reaction was Indicated. Th London market was dull on the eve of tomorrow's May day holiday and con tributed nothing to the activity of this market. Stocks were but little responsive to the good showing of the weather bu reaus weekly bulletin on 'he crops and to the moderate da-nage Indicated by the Kansas state agricultural report for April. A plentiful rain for present needs In the upper Mississippi and lower Missouri val leys was the report by the government bureau. Coupled with news of additional rains since and promise of more and the decided heaviness in the wheat market itself, the factors In the crop outlook were generally towards reassurance. The leader ship of western railroad stocks In such strength as the market showed was a re flection of the crop news. An Incident of the day was the sale of a Stock exchanue seat at an advance over the price at the preceding sale. A sustained demand for ths seats in periods of dullness In stocks Is looked upon as a sign of confidence ln early future revival of business. Much at tention was paid, however, to reports In circulation of the Intended dissolution of certain stock market connections as an evi dence of decline In speculative Interests In quarters most absorbed In that pursuit. Whether prompted by unpleasant experi ences of the recent past or bv Judgment of future probabilities, the effect of the ex ample was not stimulating to the market. The rate for money for short periods con tinued to relax, but money brokers re ported some stiffening of ratVs for longer periods. eome effect on future railroad earnings Is looked for from advances In freight rates which went into effect In va rious quarters today. There was quite general unloading of long wheat both by local and outside holders, v whiie commission houses and pit traders . also sold freely. The selling was the re sult chiefly of the complete break-up of the prolonged drouth In the southwest, other factors which helped to depress prices were Inner i Holes, absence of any fresh reports of damage by green bugs and an increase of buatwls in the world's visible sup ply, compared with a decrease of 4,075. uoO bu.. liuls the same time a year ago.
