A cross-town line on Fortieth street has been decided upon by the Omaha A Coun cil Blurts Street Railway company and work will br begun on (he line at once. The city engineer has authorised the com pany to lay th double tracks, which will run from Fortieth and Dodge streets to Fortieth and Cuming. A short Jog Is made on Fortieth street at Davenport to tli West, and the line will connect with th Farnam street line at Fortieth and Dodg streets. When the line la completed half the Farnam street cars will las run to Fortieth and Cuming streets, where they w ill stop, and lis If will run to Dundee. Work will be begun at once on the block between Dodge and Davenport streets, as this atreet Is to be paved and the directors wih to Install the tracks befoie the paving l done. James) Jensen has been awarded the con tract by the Omaha A Council Bluffs Street Railway company for the laying of th conduits to cany the high voltage cables for transmitting the power from the new plant to the outlaying stations. Power la to be carried at 13,ou0 volts and reduced to 550 volts at the converting stations which will be built. The contract calls for th construction of conduits from the power station on tho river to Seventeenth and Farnam streets, and from there to tha new station at Twenty-seventh and lAk streets nnd from some point on th Farnam street conduit to South Omaha, probably out Thirteenth street. This Is part of the betterment which the street railway is making In Its power plant. For this purpose $:100,000 has licen author ised to be expended In a new power plant. In the conduits and substations. The foundation Is now being Installed for the new generator at the power plant and ma teria Ut expected soon o errlve for this. The company also Is going to relay the light rails with heavier ones on the line to Fairmont park In Council Bluffs. This work will be done as soon as the heavier rails, which have been ordered for some time, arrrlve. Street Commissioner Flynn Mondsy morn ing formally turned over to Oily Engineer Rosewater such tool and effects as should b under the engineer's Jurisdiction by vir tue of a recent law establishing the "pnbllo works department" and giving to the en gineer such work as street grading, cross walks and gutters, formerly under the street commissioner. In connection with the street cleaning, Commissioner Flynn said: "I will be unable to do tne street cleaning In a proper manner until the holes In the pavements are fixed. As soon as the downtown pave ments are repaired I will begin the large machine work early In the morning and have men with barrels follow up work during the day. An Interstate Commerce commission hear ing will be held In Omaha Tuesday at 10:20 a. m. at the federal building on the matter of rates for cooperage material. The case Is that of the Omaha Cooperage company against the National, Chattanooga A Bt, Louis railroad and the Burlington -road. The company complains of ths unreasona bleness of the rates on cooperage materials to South Omaha from Tennessee as com pared with rates on similar material to Keokuk, la., and to Alexandria, Mo.
