The stock mar kat mad but feeble response to any news developments, the determined aosiennon of operators on any Important scale mark I Ing the (late of peculatlve entlment. Tl.at remained vaguely formed and hesl i tating In the highest degree. An Important factor In making this condition Is ths un- satisfactory news from the wheat crop. I Present condition In . the winter wheat belt are generally recognised as unsatis factory and the news from day to day Is watched for developments which may change that condition. No such news was received today and the evidence of strength In the wheat market was a burden on the market. The reduction In the Bank of Ireland dis count rate was of no effect, probably be au use It had been foreseen with, practical certainty. The Hank of France retains Its recent discount rate and. while there was no such certainty felt that It would b reduced ss In the case of the Hank of Knglanri, there was some expectation I held of such action. The Bank of France, I In fact, made a strong return In the large reduction of credits and or outstand ing note Issues, although lis cash gain was very moderate. The lmpertnl Bank of Germany showed a strong recuperation and discounts eased both In Ber'tn and London. Foreign exchange was slightly easier here. London continued to sell securities here, however, to ar. extent sufficient to weigh on the very narrow imarket. The announcement was made during the day of the coming dissolution on May 1 of the syndicate which under wrote J36.000.000 of Iake Shore debenture bonds In February, 19mi. These bonds have been quoted well below the underwriting price and receded sharply today on the understanding that the largest part of the Issue had been unmarketed and would be distributed to syndicate members. The Incident served as an unpleasant reminder that much remained to accomplish towards the absorption of congestion In the bond market. Some special significance at tached to tho notable weakness of the Chicago Great Western Issues, which was attributed to tha report of Its capitaliza tion by Minnesota legislative committee. Soma anxiety was expressed lest the Min nesota example should be used as a pre cedent In other cases. Market sentiment Is sensitive to suggestions of the prosecu tion of a policy of government regulation of capitalization based on appraised val uation. An unpleasant Impression was caused by rumors kept In circulation of after effect of the slump In stock prices which may be brought out In firm and partnership changes In some cases. For this reason the first of May Is looked , forwsrd to as a period where the passing will be viewed with relief. The financial district was not gratified over the course of developments In a crim inal case Involving peculations from a trust company and the effect was aarirra- vated by the suggestions of mystery shout possible extension of criminal . liability. The stock market had some benefit from the late reaction In the whest market, al though that movement was due to realis ing of profits In wheat and was without chsnre in the character of the crop news. The day's net changes are trivial, almost without exception. Bonds were heavy. Total sale par value Jl. 627.000. T'nlted States bonds were un- cnangei on call. and closing quotations from 4H to 4 per cent. Tba action of ths board of director of the bank wa antici pated, owing to the extreme ease of ths money niarket and the Increasing strength of the Hsnk of Fnglsnd's reserve. This doubtless will be further ireressed by ths absorption of the bulk of JS.AO.i In gld which will be available In tha market dur ing tha coming week. New York Moaey Market. NEW YORK, April 36.
