"The long Road." by John Oxenham, Is
one of the Important novels of the early
spring season. The scene is laid In Siberia,
and the story has to do with the life of
tcpan nine, the son of a Russian political
exile. Btepan comes Into conflict with the
brutal governor of his province, who de
vlees for htm an extraordinarily Ingenious
punishment that makes him forever a wan
derer on the face of the earth. The
malignant cruelty of thta governor perhaps
seems overdrawn, and yet ths author stated
that this central Incident la no product ol
the Imagination, but a sober historical fact
The recital of Btepan's struggle with his
fate, his alternate success and failure la
the effort to wring happiness out of his lot,
make up the Story. Strangely enough,
much of the tale. In spite of the tragic
background, pictures a life of fairly Idyllio
happiness. And even when the ultimaM
catastrophe comes, the tragedy Is by nt
means unrelieved. In ths end Btepan 1
courage and steadfastness triumph In spile
of the odds sgalnst him, and the final not
Is one of victory. Aslds from the striking
originality of Its fundamental Idea, "The
Long Road" is remarkable for the skill
with which the principal characters are de
lineated, and for the quiet beauty of It
style. Published by the Macmillan com
pany. "Phantom Wires," Arthur Stringer's new
novel, takes Its somewhat puxsllng title
from a phrase well known In telegraphy.
Where the quadruple! system of operating
enables four messages to go ovsr a soli
tary wire at the same time, two In eauh
direction, the three Imaginary and non
existent circuits are spoken of as "phan
tom wires." The phrase la, of course, used
figuratively by the novelist, since Mr.
Stringer's book, while by no means a study
of spiritualism, finds its climax closely
Identified with the transmission of a more
or less telepathic message In a moment
of great crisis. Since Mr. String's eric
Inal story, "The Wire Tappers." was pub
lished there have been calls for another
book of this unique character. Mr. Stringer
haa responded to this dema'nd In "Phantom
Wires." Published by Little, Brown A Co,
"Qabrielle, Transgressor," by Harris
Dickson, author of the "The Ravanels,"
"The Black Wolf's Breed," etc., Is a story
of New Orleans In colonial days. Qabrielle,
a young girl who has been educated in a
convent, upon returning home finds some
loose bricks in the wall separating her
father's garden from that adjoining. She
removes them, and enters this neighboring
garden, where she meets ths doomed prinoe
Imperial of Turkey, who Is hiding here
from a party of Turks whose mission It la
to put him to death. The love story of
these two. Interwoven with the seductive
mystery of the east. Is Intense and unusual
The book Is published by the J. B. Llp
plncott company.
With every succeeding Issue the new Cir
cle magazine shows many improvements
and advances. The April number contains
several interesting original articles, in ad
dition to the twenty-five regular depart
menta, covering practically every subject
of Interest In the home. Laura B. Starr hag
an article "Japanese Children at School
Play," which Is Illustrated by Oenjlro Yeto,
the famous Japanese artist, who also con
tributes an Illustrated article, "The Boys'
May Festival In Japan." "Inexpensive
Housekeeping In Paris," by Oeorglana
Homer, contains much practical Information
on housekeeping In Paris; Oarrett P.
ScrvlBS, the famous astronomer, contributes
"What We Might See on the Moon;" "A
Famous Doll's House" Is an Illustrated
article by Alice Corkran, dealing with
an unusual subject. "A Tree-Doctor and
His Work," by A. H. Davis; "Ths Holdfast
Principle," by Clem V. Wagner; "The Dolls'
Spring Dressmaking," by Margaret A. Ding
man, and several strong fiction stories
round out a number which will be read
with interest by every member of the
family.
The National Magaxlne for April goes
from the ten to fifteen-cent class. It con
tains "The Truth About Panama," front
the pen of the first magaxlne editor who
had the spunk to personally visit
Panama." This Is ths big feature) of the
number.
It. may well be guessed that this dis
tinction belongs to Joe Mitchell Chappie,
the editor of the National Magaxlne, who
has a way of his own of "doing things."
At the outset of this article, which lg
Illustrated with 100 handsome views, show
ing every detail of the work being dona
In digging the great ditch, and. which takes
sixty-five pages In the National, Mr.
Chappie says his trip was undertaken on a
sudden Impulse In answer to a challenge
given by a public official. The decision to
make the trip was a sudden one and Wag
promptly executed, for, he adds, "ths only
way to go. Is to go!"
It Is a great story that the National pub
lishes, snd It is one that will be read with
widespread Interest throughout the coun
try. The National should be In the hands
of every person Interested In this greet
project of the American nation, because It
Is the moat complete and thorough account
of the great enterprise that has appeared
In any magaxlne at any time.
Indoors snd Out for April Is largely de
voted to that most Interesting type of vaca
tion home, the bungalow. No other type
of small house Is so much In vogue, and
the examples shown are delightful In their
original charm and Ingenious construction.
The number opens with sn Illustrated
article on "A LouL XVI House and Its
Gardens." Following this Is "Ths Evolu
tion of the Bungalow In California," by
