to respond to recent advances. Reports of
green bug damage were received from In
diana and Ohio, Indicating that the area of
bus; operations has been extended. Mains
are predicted generally throughout the
southwest, which caused traders to eschew
the bull side of tho m.irket for the pres
ent. May wheat opened at TISo asked and
declined Kc. July options were weaker and

little support given the market.

cash situation Is slow. Closing prices were
unsteady with a net loss of Ho In May

July and September opttns tC.
Primary wheat receipts were 60.1,500

NEW YORK, April 17-The only factor
of any Importance to be drawn from the
action of today's stock msrket was Its
narrowing proportions due to tne ueenne
In general Interest In the open options.
The demand for uncovered shorts, which
was rusponslble for brisk price movements
In spite of the small dealings, waa carried
somewhat further today before It had ex
hausted Its Influence on prices. Dealings
then lapsed Into a state of lethargy. This
condition Is legarded as rather seasonaWe,
especially after liquidation such as was
completed last month. The financial dis
trict Is full of constant rumors of the con
sequences felt by the severe decline in
prices which took place then and the heavy
losses Involved. The fair Inference that
much Is to be done In the way of repair
of damage done at that time gives credi
bility to rumors and makes sentiment sen
sitive to their Influence. The losses In
volved. It Is generally believed, have fallen
upon speculators whose operations have
been relied upon for some time past for
leadership of any Important movement In
the market The reduction of the resource.
available to such operators In Itself would
constitute an obstacle to an Immediate re
sumption of speculation on any such scale
as has been witnessed In the market In the
lest few years. It Is rather obvious, also,
thst the parity Investment demand for
stocks, which was conspicuous at the ex
treme low level of prices and which may
be relied upon to effect an actual reduc
tion of the floating supply of stocks, has
died out almost entirely at the recovered
level of prices and has subMlded also In the
bond market. The course of the money
market, with any active resumption of de
mand for currency from the Interior, Is
another subject of uncertainty. With the
added problems of the outcome of the
year's crops and the extent to which the
slowing down In trade may go, the bait in
stock speculation becomes Intelligible.
News developments were of small con
sequence as they affected the market.
Much responsibility for the reaction was
attributed to a published report that hear
ings would be resumed tomorrow by the
Interstate Commerce commission Into the
Harrlman railroad operations with an ap
plication to the courts to enfore an answer
to queatlons refused before. The effect of
previous hearings on the stock market Is
too recent to allow their suggested re
sumption to be contemplated with entire
equanimity. The strength of the morning
was connected to an Important extent with
the further recovery In copper metal In the
London market. Money here was firmer,
although tha change was scarcely per
ceptible. New York exchange at Chicago
has fallen to 26 cents discount, while for
eign exchange here Is firmer. Discounts
hardened In London and the likelihood of a
further reduction In the Bank of England
discount rate Is lessened by the movement
of gold from London to Paris. It Is ex
plained, however, that this movement Is
duo to repayment of London discounts
which were purchased last year by the
Bank of France. The movement, therefore,
represents a working back to normal con
ditions which is expected to operate to
wards the easing of the stress which has
been perceptible In Paris. Today's state
ment of the Imperial Bank of Germany
also showed a rapid further recuperation
from the strain of the April settlements
reflected in the statement of two weeks
ago. Last prices of stocks were near the
lowest.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par

' CATTLE Receipts were very liberal this
morning, In fact, the heaviest run for some'
time past. The three days' supply has
been about 6,000 heavier than for the first
bait of last wsek and there has been a
very noticeable Improvement In ths char
acter of the offerings.
On account of the bearish tone to ad
vloea from eastern markets and the liberal
local receipts the fat cattle trade -opened
out rather slow and early bids were fully
10c lower than yesterday, all around. As
It developed later that there was a good
general demand for the fat, light and
handy-weight grades, prices stiffened up
on this class of stock to very nearly steady
figures, but the market waa slow and weak
on the heavy grades throughout.
The proportion of cows and heifers on
fiale today was very small, less than fifty
oads, all told, and the result was a strong,
active market for all desirable offering.
Veal calves were steady and there was
little noticeable change In the market tor
bulls, stags, etc.
Business in the stocker and feeder di
vision was rather quiet, owing to the fact
that the liberal run of cattle Included very
few feeders. There was a good demand,
however, for the good stock and prices
were quotably fully steady. Light stuff, as
usual of late, was slow and weak, although
hardly quotably lower.

HOOS While there was a very fair run
of hoas the receipts were hardly as larae
as dealers were looking for, either here
or at eastern markets, ine tone to reports
trout outsiae points was generally bearish
however, and trading was slow from start

from yesterday s ngures. A noticeable fea

Baptist Minister From Liverpool
Hopes to Do Good Work' 1st
America.
NEW YORK April 17. Rev. A. C
Aked, who came here from Liverpool to
acoept a call from the Fifth Avenue
(Rockefeller) Baptist church In this city,
arrived today on the steamer Carman I a,
accompanied by Rev. Thomas Law,
who will address the National Peace con
ference at Carnegie hall today..
Mr. Aked said the only comment he
cared to make on his mission to this
country was that he felt he had delayed
his coming to America ten years too long.
"I am 42 years old now," he said. "I
should have come here ten years ago.
While my work at Liverpool has filled my
time acceptably, I think I could have made
more of my time here. I come to America
with great anticipation of the possibilities
before me,"
