CLOSE IS tUOYANT ANB HIGHER korta Rnsk to Cover Daring; tke Last Hour Material Advances la Metal and Railway Issaes. NEW YORK, April 16. The conspicuous feature of the stock market today was the extreme dullness Into which It fell. Tne downwsrd tenaency of the last few days was checked and some recovery ensued. The consequence, however, was a condi tion bordering on stagnation. The demand which put up prices was attributed largely to account of the bear operators, who have been attacking the maraet recently. That their buying received small accession from outside sources Is sulrkiently atteld by the small figure of the astirreiWle sales for the day. A large proportion of the meager total was done in the last hour of the ses sion, when, the rush to cover by shorts gained considerable animation, making a buoyant closing. There was slight reflec tion of any outside events In the movement of prices. The copper stocks had the ad vantage of sharp rebound from recent de pression by copper metal In the London market and these shares, if American Smelting be Included, were conspicuous In the day s upward movement of prices. The coppers kept the same stocks In their com pany that have been conspicuous In all the later speculation. The Harrlmans, the Hills and Reading made up the overwhelm ing preponderance of the dealings. United Slates Steel also was dealt In In the cus tomary proportion to Its huge shares In bulk. The reaction late In the day gave the usual Indication of a highly profes sional market. Money on call continued easy In spile of some further large syndicate transactions, Including a 130.ouo.or0 payment on American .L'Enon convertible bonds yesterday and a 6,00l,0(i0 payment on General Electric new stock today.
