NEW YORK, April 10. The narrow pro.
fessional llmltatlona of the present stock
market continued much In evidence today.
The Inconsistent course of the price move
ment was accepted as reflecting nothing
morn than the shifting sentiments of the
professional traders seeking to scalp a
profit. The market seemed to be equally
free from either buying or selling transac
tions of a substantial character. With n
selling pressure on the market the room
traders found It eaay to advance prices as
a result of their own limited buying and
bidding up, but the futility of the process
waa demonstrated when they atempted a
re-sell to take profits. The buying demand
being aa torpid as the selling pressure, the
proht-taklng simply resulted In price re
tracing the previous course.
Tlie" was not much news to account for
the day's movements The spirit of caution
reflected In the diminishing activity of the
market Is generally attributed to a distrust
of the permanence or genuineness of the
present conditions In the money market.
I he suspicion on this point Is due to cer
tain discrencles In the rates chaiged for
money. The present ease of rates tor call
loans at the Stock exchange and for time
loans In Wall street obviously are not af
fecting the rates paid by railroads for ac.
commutation on a large scnle. Last week's
example of the Erie note Issue was supple
mented by the sale announced today of
$tU6,iiu) of three-year 6 per cent notes bv
the Wabash. The terms were not ofilclally
announced, but were understood to repre
sent little relaxation from the rates re
cently In force for such flotations. It la
pointed out also that banks are gliui to
purchase the highest gi-ade of mercantile
paper al 6 per cent or above, thus serving
to give a fictitious appearance to the time
money rates. The financial district Is full
of reporta of renewed negotiation for term
borrowing by railroads and corporations
and this gives the Impression that a waiting
demand exists for all available credit,
wnlon may prevent any effective relaxation
in the money market A r.i,,ii i .1
