CHICAGO tntAIN AND PH6VItIO!
Featares of tha Trading and Closlaa;

CHICAGO, April 6. Wheat advanced
more than lc per bushel on account of re
ports of damage by the green bug. At the
close wheat for May delivery was up 1V
lc. Corn was up io. oats were &io
higher. Provisions weia up UQttc.
The damage reports came from all parti
of the southwest, but the most sensational
dispatches were received from Oklahoma
and Missouri. A local crop expert, who Is
now in Oklahoma, reported today that the
wheat eroo In that state had been con
siderably Injured during the last few wacks I
and much of the uigeut demand that ex- I
Isted In today's market was based on his I
report. The absence of rain In Kansas !
and Nebraska were. It Is said, to be greatly
needed, also stimulated tb demand, .com
mission houses and shorts ware the best
buyers and the selling- waa chiefly by longs.
Prieea advanced steadily all day snd tne
market closed stronr and near to the hlirli
point. May wheat opened unchanged to Ho

and Chicago reported receipts of 600 cars,
against a holiday last week and 848 cars a
year afo.
Corn waa In active demand by eommla
slon houses and cash Interests all day and
tha market was strong. The sharp advance
In wheat, small local receipts and an In
creased demand for cash grain wera tha
principal reaaen for the strength. The
market closed strong. May corn opened a
shade to Ho higher at 4&SiMHa to 4&Hc
advanced to 46Ho and closed at the top.
Local recetpta were 2tj cars, with 4 of con
tract grade.

reports of damage to the orup In tha snuth

The provisions market waa extremely

NEW TORK. April . Opsratlons for
the advance were aggressively pursued In
the stock market today snd wide additions
were made to yesterday's gains and prices.
No change In conditions from those of yes
terday were apparent beyond the contin
uance of the relaxing tendency In money.
This was, In fact, regarded as the keynote
of the situation and gave tha Impetus to
the movement In stocks.
Commission houses reported a general re
vival of Interest In the market on the part
of clients of the special class, an element
regarded from the stock market point of
view as making; up the general public,
whose entry to the market is regarded
always as marking an Important stage In
speculation. The sppearance of this ele
ment was taken advantage of, as usual,
for some heavy profit-taking on the part
of the more professional element. Includ
ing board room traders and those having
first aocess to the actual operations of the
market. The manner In which pront-tak
Ing attain waa absorbed proved Impressive
to speculative sentiment and waa assumed
to Indicate the re-entry Into the market of
some or tne large financial powers which
ha led great speculative movements In
tha past. The size of Individual transac
tlnns, the cong-estlon of the dealings In a
few special stocks and the sensational
movements In such storka gave this Im
pression of participation In the dealings by
organisations or Individuals possessed of
resources far beyond the ordinary. Tha
action of the market under such forces
takes on a more or less artificial charac
ter and reflects active manipulation as
genuine marketing; of securities, and is for
that reason viewed with some suspicion.
rOTormous operations centered In the Har
rlman Pacifies nnd In Reading, suggesting
the resumption of market operations by
forces which have been quiescent In the
trading for a considerable time. Southern
Pacific shared fully In the movement and
was regarded as giving- the motive for It
In Its extraordinary showing of net earn
ings for February published yesterday.
A rebound In the price of copper In Lon
don was responded to by the rise In Amal
majfated Copper here. Many other move
ments centered nround these or followed
from their Influence. Thla made up a mar
ket of great Variety and frequent Irregu
larity, the rise In fresh stocks being taken
advantage of to market others. The pros
pect Of a Strona bank atntement tomorrow
was an Influence In the dealings. The stih-
treasury has contributed to the banks
since me last statement was complied 113,
175,0110, and It Is believed that this meas
ures about the actual gnln In cash for th
week, as the movement of currency to and
from the Interior seems about to have bal
anced. The ennlna of the local money mar
ket has had the effect of chocking the flow
of currency to the center, and New Tork
exchange at Chicago has fallen bsck to
par. It was announced today also that
jll of the cold ene-nged In London last
Monday for shipment to this point had
been resold in that market. Another helo-
fnl factor In the strength of the market
was the settlement without a strike of the
ware dlspue on western railroads. It was
significant of the changed attitude of the

CATTLE Otecelptg of cattle, as was to be
expected on a Friday, were light, but the
total for the week to date has been very
liberal, showing- a good gain over last week
and over a ytsur ago.
The market over beef steera did not show
any very material change. The Offerings
were light and tha movement slow, but
still pikes not materially different from
: those which prevailed yesterday. UooJ
light and handy weight beevea have
strengthened up tnla week, while the heavy
1 cattle have eased off during the last day
- j orc,' an(1
heifers were also slow, tha
market being, as usual on a Friday, with-
out any very interesting or startling 1 na
tures. What UUle siufl was on salo sold
In about the same notches as yesterday.
There were hardly enough Blockers or
feeders In sight to tslk about, but what
there wore brought steady prices.
