Ftlday' morning. He was an elevator con
ductor, and had been employed but a short
time. He was found by hi fellow work
men under the elevator In the pit of th
shaft. He cam to th plant at opening
time and had unlocked the elevator. Then
It appeared he had gone down a flight of
stairs and entered the shaft under th
elevator. It Is unknown what his object
was, but It la thought he was attempting
some light repair. Whll ther In som un.
accountable way th elevator descended to
the bottom of th shaft, forcing him down
and crushing th lit out of him by the
pressure.
Ther wer no witnesses to th accident
to be found and th only reason for us
peettng ther was some on under th ele
vator at the tlm of th discovery was th
cable had slacked.
When th heavy elevator was raised to
th first floor the ghastly discovery of the
crushed form was made. On of th cross
pieces under th floor caught the man
across th hips and th other had settled
directly on his throat. His chest was flat
tened and this pressure had forced the blood
Into tho capillaries of his face until It was
turgid and almost black. Around his
throat was- the bloodless streak where the
cross-piece had settled. Strangely enough
no bones wer broken.
Leaves Wife and Son.
Th man was an Austrian and leaves m
wife and on son. He also had a brother.
His body lies at Brewer's undertaking par
lors and an Inquest was in progress Friday
afternoon.
Th men ar somewhat divided as to th
reason for th elevator descending. Either
he may have pulled th rope which handles
the clutch from beneath, expecting to bring
the elevator down so that he might take It
from th pit and In. so doing failed In his

The hearing' In the cans of Harry dross,
pawnbroker at 618 North Sixteenth street
for buying government property, was held
before United States Commissioner Ander
son Friday morning. The special offense
charged against Gross Is that of receiving
In pawn, and advancing 85 thereon, a regu
lation army revolver. . It was shown In the
evidence th pistol was on of three that
had been stolen from Company B of th
Signal corps at Fort Omaha and hod been
pawned to Gross by a party claiming to be
a Ban Francisco refuges and telegraph
operator.
Whll Harry Gross was named as th de
fendant In the case, It was ascertained
from th evidence that th pistol had been
received by David Gross, a brother of th
defendant and clerk In the store. Harry
Gross personally - had no knowledge that
the pistol had been bought by hi estab
lishment and, In fact, he knew nothing
whatever about the transaction and bad
never seen the pistol until it was produced
In court Friday morning. His brother had
kept th matter from him, preferring to
suffer th loss personally than to inform
his brother.
Th gun was recovered from th pawn
shop by Lioutenant Carleton of th Thir
tieth Infantry and was turned over to him
without protest by David Gross, who claims
to be wholly Ignorant of. the fact that the
pistol was a government weapon.
Commissioner Anderson will decide the
matter at 10 o'clock Saturday morning.

grain It can get cars for and ther Is a

commodity we ar hauling, for th live
stock- movement is about normal for this
season of the year.
"Th Burlington, is mors of a corn road
than a wheat road and consequently we
hav -not much to figure on for th com
ing year, exoept that the ground Is' In ex
cellent condition, a the corn has not yet

ments of machinery and farm Implements,
probably more than a year ago, which Is
also another good token of prosperity,"
While the railroads are not saying much
about th rat bill which Is now before
the legislature, It Is known they are hard
at work opposing It. Kansas did not pass
any laws reducing freight rates and the
railroads voluntarily reduced grain rates
In Missouri 16 per cent before the legis
lature got busy and was driven home by a
smallpox scar at th capital.

BATON ROUGE. La.. March .-The cot
ton boll weevlll will be unusually active
and destructive this year, according to a
report by Dr. W. D. Hunter, In charge of
the boll weevil Investigation for the United
States Department of Agriculture. He says
the conditions throughout the last winter
have been favorable for the hibernation of
the boll weevil. The two critical conditions
for hibernation, temperature and dryness,
have been ss favorable as they probably
ever will be.
The mild winter and spring Is having the
effect of causing an unusually early emer
gence. t
The . conditions Indicate clearly that
weevils will be unusually abundant In the
cotton fields and that great damage Is to
be expected. Boms conditions that may
occur will have the effect of counteracting
the natural result from th present condi
tions. For Instsnce, dry weather during
Jun and July, after the cotton plants are
well stsrted, will scrvs to caeck the insect.

receiving of lebates from th Chicago ft
Alton railroad on shipments of oil.
The greater part of the evidence pre

documentary character tending to show
that th oil company shipped 1,096 cars of
oil from Whiting. Ind.. and Chappcll, 111.,
to St. Louis, paying only one-third of ths
regular tariff rate. Mora than 14,000 pieces
of documentary evldenc have been pre

WASHINGTON, March 29.-So far a th
attendance of stats militia at the Joint
encampments this summer Is concerned.
General Murray, chief of artillery. Is now
assured by th responses received by th --y
governors and adjutant generals of . the
states having militia organizations that
this novel project Is sure to be a great
success. A number of th states now wish
to combine their annual militia encamp
ments with the Joint drills, which will com
pletely swamp the resources of the coast
artillery In the matter of providing for th
reception- cf the millthimen. The governor
of California has Just notified the War de
partment of the acceptance of th Invita
tion to the Joint drills and has asked that
provision - be made for the participation
of the fifty-two military companies in the
stat.
Assignment of Companies.
Th War department hS proposed to en
tartaln only thirty-seven companies, at th
outside, to be disposed of as follows:
Six at Fort Rosecrans. six at Fort Mllcy,
eighteen at Fort Wtnneld Scott and seven
at Fort Baker, , General Murray today
wrote th governor of California proposing
that th fifteen additional companies b
encamped by th state at Its own expense
in the neighborhood of the three posts
named, when they will be given an oppor
tunity to take some part In the Joint move

details reached here today of a tornala
which passed over Cook county, Texas,
last bight A small child was killed by
flying wreckage. Ths tornado passed from
southwest to northeast, causing much dam
age at Midway, Nuenster and Myra.
Charles Tune was driving on a road when
the storm struck htm. His team was
blown Into a field and Tuna's leg was torn
off by the wreckage. The house of August
Fields at Wolf Ridge was blown down and
Mrs. Fields was painfully hurt. Th home
of Nathan Piatt was demolished.
