BUYING BY SHORTS THE FEATURE i Day's News Faralshes Little Material for Speculation Aside from the Marked Improve Meat la Baaklag Sltaatloa. NEW TORK. March 2S. The animation and strength of the stock market today waa a surprise In view of the experiment or keeping the Stock exchange open on Good Friday, contrary to the usual custom. It waa expected that operations would be little more than nominal, as the keeping of the exchange open was Inrgcly a conces sion to the bankers to avoid the necessity of making loans on Thursday to carry over until Monday. There was a small attend ance on the floor of the board room when the market opened. The London Stock ex change followed the custom there and re mained closed and no business was sup- filled from that source. All appearances ndlrated that the malorltv of member hnd taken advantage of the opportunity to got away from the city. When the activity began to show slns of revival observers were skeptical and profesed the convic tion that room traders' operations re giving an artificial appearance to the mar ket. Nevertheleee a substantial day's busi ness was recorded and the price movement waa decided and comprehensive. The rapid advance In prices Is explained on th noeda of a still uncovered ahort Interest, rather than Investment buvlng or new speruUtlon for an advanoe. The day's news offered small material for specu lation, outvlde of the pronounced Improve ment In the banking situation, indicated by the preliminary figures of the week's currency movement. Mostlv as a result of the treasury's relief measures the banks seem to have gained upwnrdu of 3l2,0in.0(K of cash reserves during the week. The regular express movement with the In terior has. moreover. vtplHert a mull in on bnlance, Imltrntlng the current of the movement In favor of this- center. The premium on New York exchanpe af Chi cago has risen to 30 cn!s. Indicating th course of remittances from that cltv to New Jork. From this Is Inferred a probable re turn flow currency from the Interior after the turn of the month. The money market was little affected hv the preparations for Monday's settlements, though call loans Were quoted at yester day a renewal rate. The loan Item of the bank tomorrow will be complicated lv the influence of the tock market liquidation. The expectation was general, however, thnt tomorrow bank statement would he strong "5 " the Stock exchange will be closd flr.. -e?i Mon(1y market would show th. 1 enrA.ts on the bank afatement. ,otner dominant Influences In thA nnnSr'.h-,?" DUN'S REVIEW OF TRADE Retail Bugineis in Staples and Bpeoialties Impasses All Expeditions. IRON AND STEEL ARE STILL ACTIVE Plgf Iron Slightly Loirer, bat No Deliveries Can Be Mad. Before July Trices of Cotton Goods Maintained. Nlbw YORK, March S9.-R. O. Dun A Co's. weekly review of trade tomorrow will say: Easter retail trade surpasses expectations, favorable weather bringing out a large Volume of business during the last week, whlie activity was not confined to spe cialties but extended to all seasonable lines of staple merchandise. Wholesale and Jobbing- houses received many supple mentary orders, especially for -dry goods and millinery, and turther Improvement in collections was reported. Announcement by some railways that re trenchment must curtail plans for exten sions, has had no peroeptible Influence on the Iron and steel Industry, owing to the scarcity of stocks In all positions. Prices were held within reason during the season of greatest pressure, when big premiums might have been charged, and the con servatism of the leading Interests Is now bearing fruit. A few quotations of pig Iron are slightly lower, but as a rule de liveries cannot be made before July, and domestlo furnaces are not able to satisfy requirements during the second quarter. This has revived Imports and one shipment Irom China is under consideration. Btruo tural steel Is taking a seasonably prominent position, specifications coming forward freely as open weather facilitates building operations, much business coming from the central west and the Paclflo coast despite the possibility of a strike May 1. Tube and wire mills are falling far behind with orders and capacity of sheet and plate plants sre Inadequate to handle the busi ness offered. , More quiet oondltlons prevail In the pri mary markets for cotton goods, but prices are well maintained, producers having large contracts on hand. . Jobbers report the first rush of the season as ended, many buyers having returned home, yet those still In the market operate liberally, and reports from the west and south Indicate that eany spring orders irom retailers have been most satisfactory. The only changes of the week were upward and the attitude of sellers has lost none of the Independence that has characterised opera tions thus far this year. Bales at second hands deviate little from the general level. Elxport trade Is still slow, but the manu facturer Is securing better returns from machinery diverted to home business than oould have been received on foreign orders. Congestion of stocks at Shanghai still domlnste the Chinese market and Bouth America supplies practically all the export demand. Development Is Blow In the woolen goods Industry, buyers of men's wear not yet having ascertained the trend of demand. New Kngland shoe manufacturers have about concluded work on spring contracts and have commenced cutting fall footwear on orders from western wholesalers. In terest has suddenly appeared in rusaet shoes, for which retailers have made In adequate preparations, and jobbers are now urging makers to forward calf and kid colored shoes ss rapidly ss possible. The decline In leather and hides furnished hopes of cheaper products, but thus far no con cessions can bs secured from manufac turers, and In another week liberal fall buying by eastern wholesalers Is antici pated. f A better demand for leather has ap peared, but transactions are not large, be cause buyers do not make satisfactory bids. Tanners have curtailed production In order to maintain values and depress hides. As stocks of the leather accumulate In the hands of ths perckers and dealers, the tone Is notably easier, owing to ths season Native cow hides sre weakest. packers' stocks being estimated at 300,000. Another fractional decline Is reported In foreign dry hides At the leading commodity exchanges rtv1iAr 1-iiIaiI fetrlv tav an1 nnflin trail ing was restricted by ins unsettled security ,1 U . ltd. BRADITHEGfi REVIEW OP TO ADR Easter Business Exceeds that of Any Prevlntns Year la Volume. NEW YORK. March 29 Bradstreefg to morrow will say: stimulating alike to retail trade and crop progress, a cessation cf liquidation In Be- ourltiea and an easing of the strain In money markets, so far as the April 1 period IS xoncernea, are me no'.soie ravoiaoie tca tures In an encouraging week. Reports as to Easter demand are of a large, in fact, record trade, thus crowning a three months' period which except In a few sec tions has exceeded any preceding year and the only drawback In which has been the getting of goods In sufficient volume tl j supply demund, ies pessimism siso is shown as to the crop outlnok: Insect dam age Is. comparatively speaking, minimised, and winter wheat, aside from parts of the southwest snd Texas, promises well, though I It Is expected, of course, too early to fore- , cn't ultimate outturn. r o' - hs"d fnilActlnna are still backward, which Is attributed variously to slow delivery of goods, congestion of farm product deliveries and finally to the i heavily Incrosaed volume of paat trale. Money Is still high in price, a long period of this condition is apparently In sight an1 there Is a disposition to await a clearer view of the future and esnerlnlly the mat ter of crop prospects before "xtene've com mitments are made as to the distant fu tures. i"hia Is perhaps best Illustrated by the holding off by the buyers of pi Iron for the third ouarter and bv the Quieting In 'demand of fine cotton fabrics for later delivery. For anything like prompt de livery cotton goods are. nowever, strong snd some fabrics are really hlarher. Exrort trade shows rather more I'fe. Wool Is nulet. partly because of high money sni idualera refuse to meet hlch views of growers. There Is mors unreat In Hbor circles, notably In the matter of ra'lway employes and of building hands. Tslk of retrenchment by railroads Is still rife. Vit cancellations of orders for rails and other materials are so far reported light. There la Ifss firmness In the voices of some metala. copper principally but Iron prices are held flrmlv by the deadlock between buyers and sellers as to d'stant months.
