SAFE ROBBERY STILL DARK

With still no sign of sny arrests In tht
case, detectives continued their wnrk on
the robbery of the safe In the Metropolitan
Life Insurance company offices, 414-416 New
York Life building. Thursday morning, and,
so far as given out, are no nearer a solu
tion than at the beginning of the search.
The only development of Thursday wal
the arrival of a representative of the hom4
office at New Tork City, who spent much
of the morning In consultation with Super
Intendent J. E. Roark of the local office.
Three persons are supposed to know the
combination of the office safe, and, cer
tainly, it Is pointed out, no more than that
number could have known that Miss Hayes,
the cashier, had neglected to go to the
bank Monday and therefore had a larger
sum -to keep In the safe than usual. Yet
the office waa entered on that particular
night, the combination of the safe worked.

which how the robber got Is a mystery,
the money, amounting to more than $1,000,
taken, and still after three days the men
at work on the case confess to have na
more Information upon which to base an
arrest than If a hundred persons had been
acquainted with the details of the office.
Mr. Roark hns been In the branch offices
of the company as superintendent .for about
nine months, coming here from Bedalla,
Mo., previous to which time 8. J. Murphy
occupied the position. There has been but
one other recent change In the personnel
of the three members of the business offlci
force.
ARTESIAN WELL ACCEPTED

Final tests of the artesian well for th
Young Men's Christian association . were
made Thursday morning In the presence of
Secretary B. C. Wade and the constructing
engineers, and the well hag been accepted.
A level of 1,132 feet waa reached before trie
flow of water proved satisfactory and a
six-Inch pipe sunk to that level.
The tests Thursday morning proved the
supply will be more than ample In quantity
and the water Is unusually clear at a tem
perature of about 62 degrees. A chemical
analysis has not yet been made of the
water, but It has no mineral or other odor
snd Is believed to be of the purest quality.
On account of the high ground upon
which the well and new association build
ing Is situated, a surface flow could not be
obtained from the well, but the water la
only about thirty feet below the surface
and will be raised by a compressed air
pump of low pressure.
The derricks and driving machinery
which have been used In making the well
will be removed Immediately and an en
gineer has arrived In Omaha, who will
begin work on constructing the new air
pump as soon a the driving; machinery Is
removed.
CITY SUES THE CONTRACTORS

The' city of ' Omaha filed suit In the dis
trict court Thursday against William J.
Yancy and James P. Redman of the firm
of Yanoy A Redman, asking 85,816 damages.
The suit Is an amended petition. A de
murer of the defendants to the original
petition was - sustained and the presenl
action followed.
The defendants took a contract In 180f
to build sidewalks for the city and gavt
a bond for $6,000. Liiiie Wright was In
jured by falling Into an excavation made
by the defendants In constructing a walk at
Fifteenth, and Spring street. She sued ths
city for $20,000 and secured $5,000, which
the city paid. The amount asked now la
to reimburse the city for that paid out,

Anton Hollmots, the Florence man ao
cused of first degree murder for the suffo
cation of his first-born child, was released
(Tom the county Jail Thursday under a bond
of $1,000. The bond had been fixed at $3,00t
by County Judge Leslie after Hollmoti's
preliminary hearing and he haa been In the
county Jail. The efforts of his young wlf4
were untiring to secure hie liberty. Though
suffering greatly from physical Illness, sh
waa at the office of Judge . Blobaugh, hei
husband's counsel, nearly every day In the
Interest of Hollmots's release. Thursday
the bond was reduced to 81.000 and tht
prisoner waa allowed to go with his wife.

stores and damaged a lumber yard; loss,

NEW YORK. March 8,-A cable dispatch
received here today from Manila reports
that Stevenson A Co.' warehouse there,
