Within an hour after having broken Into
and robbed the home of E. T. Swobe, 108
South Thirty-sixth street William Howard
was arrested as the burglar at Union sta
tion with the stolen goods In his posses
sion by Detectives Ferris and Dunn by a
clever piece of si net h work at 3 o'clock
Mondtry morning.
When a telephone message reached the
police station from the Swobe residence
that burglars had been In the house, th
two officers were sent to Investigate. Gath
ering what Information they could, they
mode their own deductions and then fol
lowed an Idea which looked to them Ilk a
chance and made a hurry trip to th depot.
There, In the check room, was a suit case
recently left by a man. It was very heavy.
The dcetctlvea placed themselves where
they could see and hear all, and after a
wait of some time their vigil was re
warded by the appearance of the man they
wanted.
Howari was taken to tKe police station
and when the suit case wns opened It was
found to contain the goods stolen from the
Swobe residence. Anoher grip which How
ard hnd with him contained his personal
effects and Jewelry believed to; have been
stolen from other houses. In his pockets
were also articles which may prove to be
loot of housebreakings. The articles taken
from Mr. Swobe were silverware, silks and
Jewelry and were easily Identified by him
when he called at the police station Mon
day morning.
Man Who Did Other Deeila.
That Howard Is the man who hes troubled
residents In different parts of the city Is
the opinion ot Chief of Police Donahue
and Chief of Detectives Savage. The home
of Harry 8. Weller, 3610 Bemls park, was
entered recently and goods found on How
ard were' recognised as being part of the
loot. Scarcely has a night passed for two
weeks or more that some clever Job was
not committed and the police are sure
Howard was the man In each case.
Detectives Ferris und Dur.ri took the
lucky depot trail on the possibility' that
they were after the same man who had
dons the other recent burglaries. The po
lice had never been able to learn any more
than that goods were shipped out of the
city by express Immediately after a bur
glary, and when thoy found that a suit
case had been stolen from the Swobe home,

Captain T. L. Crelgh has recently re-
urned from an extended trip through the
south. One of the points visited was the
site of Andnrsonvllle prison, where 1S.M0
union soldiers perished while prisoners of
war within the confederate lines. Mr.
Crelgh said: "The grounds now comprise
some elRh)y acres. Including the twenty-
even acres of the prison pen proper. In
which were herded at one time 31.0O0 union
soldiers. The grounds have been purchased
by the Woman's Relief corps and beauti
fied. The National cemetery there contains
13.000 graves of known dead and 900 un-
nown dead union soldiers who perished In
he prison and vicinity. Providence spring
has been beautified with a marble fountain
nd " other suitable surroundings. The
graves of the dead are suits bly marked.

the prison,. Including the famous dead line.
the old hospital and where the six "raid
ers" were tried and executed. The keeper's
residence Is on the spot where Wlrx had
his official headquarters. The grounds are

of modern warfare. The government maln-
ains the National cemetery there, while
the National Woman's Relief corps looks
after the care of the grounds. It Is quite
certain that the proposed monument to
Wlrs will not be erected anywhere near the
grounds, and I question Jf such a monument
will ever be erected. The southern peoplo
are not particularly proud of him, and this
s especially true of the old confederate
soldiers, who have very little use for the
am or memory of Captain Wlrx."
Captain Crelgh brought back with him a
number of souvenirs of the old prison pen
In the form of a piece of the old stockade,
nnd a number of buttons thst were found
on the old prison ground by some colored
men, who gave them to Captain Crelgh.

Mrs. Joseph M. Cudahy spoke before the
social science department of the Woman's
club Monday afternoon on the new club
for self-supporting young women being
organised and to be opened May 1 at Forest
Hill, the horn of th late Herman Kountze.
Mrs. Cudahy said that nearly half the
equipment of the house already has been
provided through the kindness of Interested
friends and she wa confident the rest
would be forthcoming In time. In addi
tion to the permanent rooms for between
forty and fifty young women, there will be
dormitory with accommodations for eight
or ten, to be used for young women
strangers coming to the city until they
can find permanent suitable homes. Accom
modations In the club will cost from $3.50
to $6 a week, according to the room. Break
fast and supper will be Berved at the house,
but no noon rnnalj as th Young Women's
Christian association noon lunch - meet
this; necessity.
The free use of th house laundry will be
granted to all members of the club and
th large reception hall en the main floor
will be used as the reading, writing and
living room. The grounds will comprise
about one square block. Including a. tennis
court Mrs. Cudahy explained that the
club would be In a way supplementary to
th Young Women' Christian association
and wished It especially understood that
It Is to be entirely self-supporting and self-
governing and in no sense a charitable

Western railroads finally have announced
they will make special rates for the mov
ing of sugar beet workers from Nebraska
points to Colorado, exot pt Denver, Colorado
Spring and Pueblo, and also to Wyoming
and Montana, effective April 25 to May 10.
No special rates will bo given to worker
who have formerly hud rates to the Michi
gan fields nor to any part of Nebraska,
The scarcity of labor In th west has
caused the railroad to make this refusal
for rates for sugar beet workers going to
Michigan, as Michigan ha three times the

I'nlon' Pacific Bids for Troops.
Gerrlt Fort, assistant general passenger
agent of the Union Pacific, has returned
from Washington and a visit to the east
ern agencies of the Union Pacific. While
In Washington he submitted a bid for a
renewal of the contract for hauling naval
recruits for the coming fiscal year.
"Tlte season in the east Is not a far
advanced as it I in the west." said Mr.
Fort. The grass has not begun to appear

ice rendered by the two new steel freight
car which tho Union Pacific built at toe
Omaha shops and which have been given a
try-out on the road. The preliminary re
port Is they are very satisfactory. Work
also has nicely begun on the construction
of the new motor car which were ordered
some time ago and also on five trailer
for these. These motor car will have 200
hors power motors, th earn a No. 8,
which Is now doing service between
Beatrice and Lincoln.
