Ing side, that the reduction in volume is
welcomed. There was little or none of the
urgent selling pressure today which has
developed at one time or another during
a session for many days past.
The early market made some disquieting
dips and there was more or less feverish
feeling perceptible In the movement nf
prices, but this was on a diminishing scale,
and the tendency was towards a distinctly
quieter market. The situation seemed to
be that effective support was forthcoming
at last for another hostile attack on prices
The market was enabled to advance slowly
as a consequence. The demand was not
large, however, and the gradual harden
ing tendency after the opening weakness
was Interrupted by many halts and back
sets and Intervening periods bordering on
stagnation. The terrors of the bears have
been dissipated to some extent by the fail
ure of confirmation of any of the many
alarming rumors of failures and embar
rassments which were kept In constant
circulation yesterday and the day before.
There was a noticeable resumption today
or tne buying In odd lots, which was sup
posed to represent the presence In the
market of the small Investors, attracted
by the rate of Investment return on stocks
offered at the resisting prices. Operations
of a larger class on margin were almost
entirely In the hands of the professional
class, and their many shifts of position
accounted for the constant backing and
filling of the market.
The Incident of the day to which most
Importance was attached was the advance
In the official discount rate of the Bank of
France from 3 to 3K per cent, carrying
the private discount rate up with it to 3
per cent. It was generally assumed that
this movement was directed against the
London market's pressure on Parts. The
recent high ruling Vate of sterling ex
change at Purls was attributed at first to
remittances from Paris to take part In
the Japanese loan conversion nt Ixindon.
Some opinions also attributed the result to
a process of remittances from Paris
prompted by the "desire of French capital
to escape the proposed Income tax. U was
reported that the Bank of France was act
ing In conjunction with the government in
refusing to part with gold for export In
order to oppose the movement of French
capital away from the country. The ac
tion of the French bank, however, broadly
considered, Is accepted as confirmation of
ine woria-wide tightness or money mar
ket!. Today's Bank of England returns
showed an expansion of fl4.7GO.OfK) In out
standing credits, which was the decisive
ractor In the decline In the condition of
the hank, the reserve and bullion Items be
ing little changed. The period of tax col
lections In London Is now passed and It Is
considered possible the Bank of England
will control the money market as abso
lutely as heretofore. With the Anrll set
tlements out of the way. It is doubtful
whether the tacit agreement which New
York bankers are assumed to be under to
take gold from the London market will
oe longer observed. Official announce
ment by the Erie railroad today of the
postponement of sweeping plans for .new
outlay marked another staire in the re
trenchment policy of the railroads In order
to relieve tne undue pressure of the Insuf
ficient supplies of capital available. Some
stocks ended the day at the best prices,
but the closing tone was rather unsteady.
Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par value,

In the foreign section, where Paris oper

tha announcement that the Hank of

CATTIjE There was anotner llneral cat
tie run this morning, but unfortunately
trains were very late, less than haJX the
receipts being In sight when It wa.8t.ime
for the market to open. The remainder of
the receipts came straggling In during the
whole day. As a result of the nonarrlval
of stock trains buyers were very alow about
getting out Into the yards. At the same
time reports from other selling points were
discouraging, so that the general feeling
right at the start was weak and lower.
Among the receipts of cattle today was
quite a showing of pretty decent beef steers,
but even that tact was not sufficient to put
any life Into the trade. The market at the
oienlng was a dead one, and there was
very little life at any time during the day.
The market as a whole might be described
us slow and lUU15c lower.
Cows and heifers were in the same condi
tion as were beef steers. Buyers asserted
right at the outset that they must take
their purchases at lower figures today. As
the offerings were quite liberal they suc
ceeded to a great extent In having things
their own way, the market being slow and
lot) 15c lower.
There was no great change In the mar
ket for stockers and feeders. The country
demand this week, especially for heavy
feeders, has been none too good and specu
lators In consequence were not very hungry I
for fresh supplies, no that the general mar
ket was slow and dull.

I.ONDON. March 21 WOOL The offer
ings at the wool auction sales today
amounted to 14 S56 balea Merino greasles
were ooosvsloruuly dearer. Greasy rroes
brods were In good demand for America,
but home buyers secured all the fine par

HOGS The market opened this morning
with buyers bidding a flat 16c lower than
yesterday's general market, or lOo lower
than yesterday s close. In other words,
they were offering So 25 for the general run
of hogs and some of them declared that
they would not pay a cent more for any
thing regardless how good It might be.
Sellers made a hard struggle to maintain
the market, but conditions were so much
against them that they were forced to cut
loose at packers' prices. When the selling
tiegan the hogs went with a rush and the
great bulk of all the hogs in sight changed
hands In a very few minutes. The first
sales were almost entirely at 86 25. very
little attention being raid to quality. A few
minutes later, when buyers had on enough
hogs so that they were no longer afraid
nf getting left, the trade slowed up and
86 22j became the popular price. A good
many of the late hogs sold at this latter
figure. It being almost Impossible to get
any more than that even for the best loads.
It will be noted from the sales below fnat
the bulk of all the hogs sold at S6.22Vy;r
6 26. whereas yesterday considerably over
half of all the hogs brought 86.40. The top
yesterday was 16.46 and today 86.80.
Today's decline carries the market to a
point that Is 26c lower than at the close
of last week, or Q45c lower than on
Thursday of last week. Packers have been
very bearish all winter, a fart that has
been commented upon a good many times
In these columna Up until recently re
ceipts have been so llfht that It was Im
possible for packers to hammer prices down
to any great extent, with the result that
hogs sold high all winter. During the last
few days the large Increase In receipts at
11 market points has given them an ad
vantage which they have made the most
of. with the result that they have suc
ceeded In breaking the market as noted.
