Vlalons were 6 to 12c higher.
Selling was yrevajent tor the greater
part of the day In the wheat pit and the
market was weuk. The early weakness In
securities In Wall street wa the clilei de
pressing Influences, although weather con
dition throughout the United States were
an Important factor, the mild weather In
the southwest being favorable for the grow
ing crop- while fair weather In northwest
Increased the movement In that section.
Receipts at Minneapolis and Duluth were
liberal and this added to the weukneos.
The weekly statistics were bullish but had.
little effect on the majority of the local
traders. The world's shipments were al
most 1.000.0UO bushels less than had been
expected and the amount of breadatutts
oil ocean puaeuge decreased 40,uuo against
an increase of 1.77.V0OO for the same time
lust year. The late strength of corn and
oats steadied the wheat market during the
last half hour. The close was steady. May
heat opened Vu'mC lower to a shade
blgher, at "fH to 7uc, sold off to 76c and
closed at ?6S'u76Vic Clearances of wheat
and flour were equal to 7&,oou bushels. The
visible supply Increased l.t4,uu0. Primary
receipts were l,oJ7,uu bushela. compared ,
with 571,000 for the corresponding day .one
year ago.. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago
reported receipts of 674 curs against 719
Gars last Week and 623 cars one year ago.
The com market was decidedly strung.
Short and cajth interests were good buyer
all day while at times offorlngs were light.
Weekly statistics were favorable to the
bulls, the world's shipments being almost
l.lMi.OCO bushels leas than last week and
the amount un pusauge showed a decrease
Of 2.2i.UW bushels. The market closed
trong. May corn opened lw higher
t 46t!.to 464c, sold on to 4'c ana then
advanced to 6Vtu, where It closud. The
oca I receipts were IH6 cars with none of
Iwntract grade.
Oats opened weak but rallied on covering
by shorts and closed strong. May oats
opened H tf'Wc lower at 3iSc to 39o, ad
vanced to 40", and closed 4oc. Local
receipts were X care.
The early provisions market was weak
because of liberal receipts of live bogs.
Later the market rallied upon a lively de
mand from a local pucker, who was stid
to bo covering short sales. At the close
May pork was up loc at 1156. l.ard was

was whonv uue to tne distress) of bear
operators who had continued to sell stocks
snort recklessly down to the lowest depths
of Thursday's plunge and who ere com
pelled to buy to cover on Saturday by the
volatile recovery. The very violence cf the
recovery gave warning of Its unreliable
nature and speculative sentiment was
qnlte prepared for a check and a reaction
today. In fact tne London market had al
ready anticipated this course before trai I ig
began here and snt over a materially
lower range of prices than the closing
here.
The drop In the open dealings here was
wider than anticipated and had t lie effect
of reviving some of the excitement which
prevailed last week. Rut It appeared that
the wilder fluctuations were laigely due to
the plunging operations of a professional
element which had become habituated to
free action by last week's experience. Kf
fectlve support appeared in the market
and the proceedings then were much quieter
and more oiderly, although the renewed
weakness of the latter market made the
lowest prices of the day. The market con
tinued to show the normal effects fallow
ing such price contortions as those of last
week, that is, It showed the lack of large de
mand from shorts which were squeezed
Into coveting In Saturday's market and
felt the effects of reselling to take profits
by those who secured In Thursday's slump
or who hnd bought on Friday merely for
the purpose of supporting prices and avert
ing what threatened to become a disaster
to the market. The diminishing activity of
the market Indicated the disposition to
pause after the severe experience of last
week and take stock nf conditions ami of
promise before entering again upon large
operations In stocks. General Information
as to the causes and the sources of the un
loading which produced the convulsion In
the market Is still largely lucking. Certuln
conclusions, however, find warranted ac
ceptance. The extent of the liquidation
must hnve gone far to cure the trouble,
whatever It was.
It is taken for granted also that the In
vestment demand, uncovered by the extent
of the decline, must have largely reduced
the floating supply of stocks In the market.
Not only was the absorption by private
investors very large, but investment Insti
tutions are believed to have taken advan
tage of the opportunity to extend their
holdings of securities at an attractive rate
of returns. Confidence Is felt also thnt the
reduction of credits effected will afford
available resources for the better digestion
of some of the new capital Issues, which
nua necome a glut In the market, obstruct
ing Its channels against the movement of
other desired Issues.

CATTLE The week afaita out with lib
eral receipta of cattle of all kinds, but
with the average quality poor, a consider
able proportion of the arrivals consisting
of traijh of one kind and another.
Good fat steers were in fair demand and
the market on anything of that uescrlpliou
was generally steady with last weeks
close. Oood steers, however, were In very
light supply, the most of the offerings
being on the common to medium order.
The Inferior kinds were slow throughout
the day, with the tendency of prices down
ward. Strictly good cows and heifers were also
steady and In fuir demand at laat week's
closing prices. Inferior and common grades
on the other band were Blow and dull
throughout the session, with prices gener
ally a little lower.
What few Blockers and feeders there
were met with pretty fair sale at good
Bteady prices. Feeder buyers helped out a
good deal on the warmed-up cattle, taking
u good muny that otherwise would have
had to go to the killers at less money.
