NEW TORK, March 11. The action vf
the day's slock served to strengthen ma
terially the Impression that the King period
ot liquidation had rwn Its course. This
supposition was already terming Itself In
tne speculative attitude towards the mar
ket last week owing to the obvious absorp
tion going on at various points In the stock
list, even while th most acute weakness
was susceptible at others.
Saturday's strong closing left the bears
uneasy over their uncovered position and
prices opened with quits an upward spurt.
The market had Its periods of uncertain
fluctuations during ths day and closed dis
tinctly easy. This did not obscure the fact
that speculative sentiment was substantially
Improved and muoh of th gloom which
overhung the market last week was dis
persed. The improvement of the market
must b set down In larger part to a sub
sidence of the pressure to sell than to any
large or urgent demand for stocks. The de
cided diminution In th volume of th mar
ket la an Index of this fact However, ths
demand was more than sufficient to over-
weigh the greatly leasened selling and to
carry prices substantially and compre
hensively upwards. No striking change In
conditions was cited as the occasion for the
Changs In the current of the price move
ment, but the extent of the declines al
ready forced, .It Is argued, go far toward
a readjustment of prices to a wide possible
deterioration from present Industrial con
ditions. This contention Is given additional
. force by the continued absence of any sign
I of the upward reaction In th different
trades. The mercantile agencies report a
full tide of demand for all lines of merchan
dise with business above laat year's corre
sponding period. The country's bank clear
ings last week showed a material expansion
ver ooin tne preceaing week ana tn cor
responding week of last year. Railroad
tranlo ofllclals continue to complain of
lack of car to move freight, which la of
fering still In unabated volume. Authori
ties in steel trade insist that the demand
for sll lines of flnlshod products continues
at flood tide. These conditions serve to
keep in check the apprehension caused by
th avowed purpose of the rsilrvads to re
trench all possible new outlays for Improve
ments. ...
The tons of the call money market was
percepUbly easier today In spite of the
weak showing of the Saturday bank state
ment. The large cash loss showed by the
statement waa attributed to a rectification
of the previous week. Some Important re
quirements for stock and note subscriptions
are to be met thl week. New York bid
for gold In London today was again Inef
fective except to cause a fractional advance
in the price which the Bank of England
was obliged to pay for gold. Sterling ex
change at Paris was again strong and It
was reported that part of th London sup
ply of gold was made up of American
eagles, presumably received - from Paris.
Money and dlsoounts receded In London,
but advanced In Berlin. Time money was
strong here, with loans at per cent for
periods up to six months. Th banks, how
ever, are making large payments to the
subtreasury for retirement of circulation.
It is reported that the full 29,000,000 quota
of the monthly retirement allowed under
the new law has already been applied for
at Washington for this month.' The day'
extreme advance were materially reduced
by the profit-taking of the Anal hour, but
ubstantlal net gains were left. The clos

morning when th merket opened, less
than a dosen csrs being In sight. tAter
trains kept stringing in until the total re
ceipts were very liberal, as will be noted
from the figures st the bead of column.
Trier was a good demand and buyers
started out In good season cleaning up the
early receipt In wry short tlm The
only thing that prevented there being a
good actlv market waa th late arrival
of trains, which necasearlly prolonged th
trade throughout a good hare of th day.
Th prlcea psld were steady with last
week and entirely satisfactory to owners.
It was. In fact, an entirely satisfactory
market, as viewed from a seller's stand
point.. What was said last wek regarding
common to medium grades being In slack
demand would apply equally well today.
The advice given so many times of Iste
still holds good, "ship In. your fat killers
and keep everything else back until It Is
finished for msrkt.

CATTLE RecelDts were very liberal this
morning but not mors than ought to be ex
pected on a Monday. Chicago, however,
reported ft very heavy run with a sharp
Break in prices.
Buyers acted the same as they did last
week, that is, they went through the yard
picking out here and there a load of beef
steers that happened to taks their fancy
and paying prlcea that did not look very
much different from the close of last week.
At the same time they would neglect other
cattle just as good or bid decidedly lower
on them. The result was a siow ana auu
market from start to finish, ths salas rang
ing anywhere from eteedy down to at
least lUo. lower than last week's close.
Cows and heifers were in fair demand
and the market generally was steady on
desirable kinds. There was. In fact, more
life to the cow trade tnan was tne case
With beef steers.
There were more Blockers ana Teeners in
the yards than for some little time back.
Fortunately, thers was also a pretty good
demand, speculators being free buyers In
anticipation of a liberal country demand.
The prices paid did not show any note
worthy change, both buyers and sellers
quoting the market on everything desirable
as fully steady with last week's olose.
