The cost of the flats, which will be unique by the anstallatlon of many of the latest modern conveniences, will be about $12, 000. They will be built as an Invest ment and placed upon the rental market as soon as completed. It is understood that Increased accom modations will be provided for the rapidly Increasing colored population of Omaha by the erection of a row of brick flats by M. F. Martin on a lot 44x132 feet on Izard street between Twenty-third and Twenty-fourth streets. Mr. Martin bought the land for $1,800 through the Byron Reed company and the D. V. Sholcs company and has taken out building permits aggregating $4,000 for the erection of the flats. The Real Estate exchange has rejected the plan of E. A. Benson for a contest among architects for the submission of plans for a model cottage, with a purse of $160 at stake. It was the plan of Mr. Ben son to have several hundred western archl tects submit plans to the exchange for four, five and six-room cottages, the winner in each case to receive $!j0 and the exchange to retain the winning set of specifications It was planned to have the money sub scribed and, In fact, nearly $103 was vol untarily pledged at the exchange meeting, but the balance was not forthcoming, so the question was laid over for further consideration. The scheme has boen suc cessfully operated In many other cities and would, no doubt, have given the real estate men and building trades operators many new Ideas,, but Its Intrinsic value to the exchange was questionable and the plan was, therefore, abandoned. The most Important real ornate transac tion of the last week was the acquisition by a local syndicate, headed by the D. V. Sholes company and the I'ayne Investment company, of the Keystone farm of W. A. Paxton, which adjoins the town of Benson on the west. The property contains 652 acres, 400 of which Is virgin soil, and was bought for the reported price of $125 per acre, which Is deemetl extremely low ac cording to the price received for sales of other acreage In that vicinity. It is planned to exploit the tract as an addition for suburban homes of the better class, the whole farm to be cut up Into tracts of from five to twenty acres and sold to actual settlers. Boulevards will be made through out tho entire addition, which promises to fill a long felt want In the way of real choice suburban property. Grading was begun Friday on a part of the new site. Goodrich hall, at 1309-17 North Twenty fourth street, has been sold to T. H. Wel rlch Fixture company, and Improvements costing $2,500 will be made to the building for Its use as a bank, office and store fix ture factory. Mr. Welrlch Is now In the east buying machinery to be Installed in the new factory, which will employ about seventy-five men.
