NEW TORK. Maeh .-fieldom If aver wa seen such varied and vinlent fluctua tions In prices of securities as those which occurred today. There have been psnlca In ut nut-a mar-set wnen prices fell appa rently Into a bottomless abyss; there have been boom periods when the bold opera tions of darlnsT eneculatora seemed lo ha carrying prices inimitably upwards; but levenan upward ana downward alter nations which characterised today's move ment bad few parallels. The market was two-aided from the start, Then followed s period of abrupt reversals of the general current of prices and ultimately excited and disorderly movements at -roe currents. The whole movement was without definite news to explain It, but the volume and the esgressivepese ot tne operations were suf ficient to stamp them as . coming from sources of Importance. It ie thle Implied Importance of the origin of the present dealings, and ths mvnerr which hanss over It 1 which have - given ImDresstve- ness to ths speculative imagination. Wall street parlance has found a phrase, "Rich man's panic," to define the condi tion. Thla la haaa.4 in Ih. nr.nnal quite commonly held In the neighborhood of tne ntock . exchange, that men of great wealth who accumulated large holdings of stocks last year, found themselves with out prospect of selling out to advantage on me present puDiio aistaste for the stock markets. It is believed they have been prompted, as well, by the urgency of other cans upon mem, aue to the universal aure tor overtaken slon, to liquidate their holdings as best tney may. Ths action of the market for several days, snd of special stocks notably, has given color to this theory of the events In progress. Into this condition of sentiment waa precipitated today a report that car ried wltli It an Inference that the suppos edly distressed capitalists were. In reality, taking advantage of the unsettlement of values to carry out another daring exploit The rumor alleged with positive certainty that large centralised holdings of Reading had ben taken over by Mr. Harrlman, securing his control of the property. The heavy liquidation of yesterday In Atchison was alld to be of Union Pacific hold ings to provide resources for the Reading operation. The bears In Reading were thrown Into a panlo and there was a scram ble to oover all through the list. The report was Impossible of verification and Its plau sible and likely features were so mixed as to leave the opinion at sea. The bears were Intimidated and were disinclined to pursue their attacks on prices of other stock a The Reading rumor-came into the market In the midst of a drastlo liquidating move ment In Canadian Pacific, which had forced that stock down over four points. This had much the same effect as the violent slump . In Atchison yesterday and had served to break the whole market. The reversal of the movement was all the more abrupt and violent on that account. There also was very beavy liquidation In Penn sylvania, Amalgamated Copper and Union paclflo. The absorption of the Hill stocks and of Reading, however, was constant throughout the day. Atchison, also, met no pressure as that of yesterday. These evidences of resistance In the market al ready had divided speculative sentiment and the Reading Incident turned prleee de cisively upwards.-No attention was paid to news concerning general conditions. The last prices were generally the, best of the day and an active buying movement was In force. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value, 81.730,000. United States 3s advanced li jr cent on call.
