He was entertained at lunch at Dr. Harold

make three speeches at St. Louis.

of athletics in colleges at Cornell." said

Our Idea la to solve the problem of physical
education for the entire student body, and
wa think we hsve succeeded. Wa hava
made athletics a means of recreation and
training for the entire body of undergradu
ates and have made It compulsory- At
tlm-s at our university over 1.000 students
are engaged In athletic sports at one time.
We require of freshmen and sophomores
either military drill or physical training,
which they may take In any form they
choose. Indoor or outdoor, and we permit
any form of athletic exercise that meets
the requirement of the course. Thus soma
skate, some play foot balL some play golf
and others take other forme of exercise,
but they must report to the faculty and
be credited with what they hsve done.
"The regents hsve set aside fifty-five
acres at Cornell as a playground and for
an athletio field, but It is the policy to see
that Intercollegiate sports do not Interfere
withthe athletics of the entire student
body. We are proud of ths giant strides
wa hsve made In athletics at Cornell
since the beginning of this century, and
hope to broaden the field y giving recrea
tion to more and more students.
