at the opening wss caused by the weekly
statistics which were more favorable to

moat Important of these weakening factors
wera world's shipments of 11J.000 bo. dur

early market. Despite these Influences
commission houses were active buyers and
as trading progressed tha demand was
augumented by the free covering of shorts.
This Improvement In demand was largely
due to reports claiming an Increased ac

NEW TORK. Feb. ll-The dealings In to

trailera turned to the short side of
the market or reduced long commitments
in response to this supposed admonition.
The maraet also was confronted witn the
news that the Bank of England had again
secured all of the arrivals ol South Afmnn
gold In Liondon, thus belying the confident
expectation of last week tnut the Inward
movement of gold would begin this meek.
Thia represents the progress of efforts in
the various financial markets to work out
toe nice balance of their several needs w:tn
aa little unaettlement as possible. Sterling
exchange in tTls rose lgo.ouly today ana
this was sttrlbuted to remittances from
Paris to London In payment of subscriptions
to American railroad note lasues. An accu
mulation of American credua in Ixmoon Is
thus going on and the absence of competi
tion against the Bank of England for the
gold In lxmdon was again said to be duo
to deference of New ork bankers to the
needs of London market. The London
Statist says:
"The flurry which arose last autumn re-
suited entirely from the fact that New
York was unaware of London having
reached the limit of ita gold resources. Had
New York been closely acquainted with
the situation here gold Imports would prob
ably have been stopped before the advance
In the Bank of England rate to 6 per ctnl
became neceaaary."
This means that shipments of gold from
London to New York are dependent only
on any real need In the Nfw York market.
The day's rumors today were largely
dealing with supposed coming note Issues,
of which the extent snd variety were said
to be great. No authoritative announce
ments followed the rumors. The compila
tion of national bank returns to the comp
troller, received from Washington today,
claimed the principal Interest, on account
of the increasing excess of the loan item
over the Individual deposits. In fact, com
pared with the previous statement of No
vember 12, there has been an actual shrink
age In the deposit Item of over I174.ii.i0.
wlille loans have expanded in the same
time, tS.iOI.SM, and over January last year
upwards of f2,CiO.OOOL It la because of this
movement of the deposit Item that the
banks, while showing a d-cline of some
rS.OOc.Oi since November lrt their cash hold
ings, are able to report fn Increase In pro
portion of reserve to deposits from 20.W
per cent to 21 S3 per rent.
Money was firm today both for call and
time loans, partly on account of the fail
ure to engage any gold In London for New
York. The prospect of the early r4 sump
tion of the Interstate Commerce commis
sion's Inquiry Into the Harrlman railroad
combination waa made something of in
the depressed movement of the market.
The selling paused at Intervals, but was re-
newea oerore any important recoveries en
sued, except the final covering movement
among street bears, which brought tha
market to a firm cloaing.
Ponds were heavy. Total sales par value,
tl.S&S.'r.o. Cnlted States bonds were un
changed on call.
The following was the range of prices on

CATTLE The recelpu of cattle thia
morning were the largest that they hav
been iu a long time. The recovery of the
market last week under th influence of
very light receipts aemed to encourage
the country to send In liberal supplies.
Although market reports had generally
cautioned the country against overaupply
lng the market at this tmii, when euaiern
markets are pretty badly glutted, still
every one seemed to feel that prices were
high and that, he would be the only one to
send in cattie. The result waa that th
yards were filled full.
Late trains and a disposition on the part
of buyers to go alow until they were well
informed as to the situation at other mar
kets caused the trade here to start out
verv slow and it was late lefore anything
of contequence was done. Selfers were de
termined to maintain the market lust as
far as poasible, so when buyers started out
bidding lower there was no uispusition to
cut lovse very frtsely.
The hist cattle to sell were stockers snd
feeders, of which there was a liberal sup
ply In the ards. Speculators wete all well
cleaned out last week and they all ap
peared to want additional supplies, with the
result that good feeders especially were in
fair demand and commanded generally
steady prices, common and inferior grades
were generally neglected and holders of
such found It slow work unloading.
When the market on killers finally opened
beef steers sold generally on .the basis of
fully V'c lnwer. possibly some of the most
desirable kinds that Just happened to suit a
buyer's order may nut have been that much
lower, but. on the other hand, there were
some of the less desirable kinds that sold
more than 10c lower.
Cows and heifers suffered still more de
cline than steers, th market being fully
UKilac lower. It waa estimated that there
ware over 1"0 ear of cow stuff on sale.

SHEEP Receipts of sheep on paper were I
the la treat that they have been st th.s
point In a long time, a total of sever ty-i sol
cars being reiorted. Tht se figures, how
ever, were deceiving In that forty-two cars
out of this number were through stuff te ng
hauled here only for feed and rest. The
gtestes part of them wete Colorado lambs
on their way to an Illinois feeding station
to be fed out foi the later market. When
the market opened there were actually only
fourteen cars on sale, with sixteen leprietl
back.
Advices from other selling points were
hot reassuring ami the trade at this point
opened a little slow, but about steady. It
was apparent that buyers wanted dialrahle
killers, but as Is usual when there are quite
a good ninny still bsck. they were in no
special hurry about filling orders, which
made th trade alow as noted.

Although the legal time for the expiration
of the ninth Wyoming legislature was r.t
12 o'clock, midnight. Saturday, the hours
did not adjourn until noon and the senate
until five minutes after noon Sunday. The
delay was occasioned by the adherents of
the bills creating a farm for tho feebla

of tTS.Ono, and appropriating tTS.oOO for the
improvement of the state hot springs at
Thermopolls. , Those favoring those bills
in the house were sufficient number to
prevent the general tcpproprlntlnns bill receiving-
a vole of two-thirds of the houso.

which was absolutely neoessnry If the state
government was to be carried on during
the ensuing two years. In an effort to force
the passage of the two bills. Numerous
conferences between house snd senate 00 n

whereby I15.no wss appropriated for th

consummated. The general appropriations,
