RETAILERS AFTER JOBBERS Threaten to Establish Larre Cooperative Wholesale Qrooar Hone. ( ... - PENALTY FOR JOBBERS RETAILING MODS Secretary Flacker Says t rla tmm Hnw RosMTrll Doetrla Haa Bfa Kesiouaed Aanf Wholesaler' Employee. Tha Omaha Retail Grocers' association haa threatened to . orrmnlie and operate a co-operative wholesale grocery company unless the local Jobbers discontinue the practice of Belling foods direct to con sumers. Such action would not be a boy cott. In the strict sense of the term, but Ita effect would be the same. Acting on the "hunch," the Jobbers are becoming very careful about selling to others than retailers, and some have gone so far as to refuse to sell goods to their own employe, who heretofore have been privileged to buy groceries for themselves at the same prices paid by the retallere. The employes, suddenly confronted by an Increased cost of living, are In Ill-humor. "Is It true you hava threatened to boy cott the Jobbers?" Was asked of Harry Fischer, secretary of the Omaha Retail Grocers' association. "No," i said -Mr. Fischer, "but we told them to get out of the retail business or we will get into tha wholesale business. We hope the warning will be effective. It Is not an Idle threat, either, as I believe the grocers of the city could organise a wholesale business which would make money for Itself and for the Individual re tall houses. But It Is not likely we will do anything in this Una If the Jobbers treat us right. Too Mueh RoaitTfltlulin. "Why should you object to the wholesale house selling groceries to Its employes?" was asked Mr. Fisher. . "It Is surprising bow large families the mployes have," he said. "To Judge by the amount of groceries they buy from the Jobbers, there Is not one of them but could fulfill President Roosevelt's highest Ideal as a perpetuator of the race. W would have not the slightest objection to letting the employs buy groceries for his own home. If It would stop there. But each man has about three aunts, four brothers and five cousins, all of them with families, and he buys at wholesale prices for the whole bunch. We have unearthed a case whore a man had a Vagon to deliver his goods at the various houses, and It Is presumed he got a commission from each family for which he bought. "The practice la a nuisance to the Job bers, and I am sure they will help us eradicate It" Mr. Fisher told of one case where the manager of - a -business house which em ploys a large number of men had the nerve to make a list of Its employes, take It ,to a grocery house and aak the latter to sell groceries at Jobbing prices to all named In the list Not waiting to see whether the grocery firm would accede or not, the retail grocers raised such a storm of protest that the scheme was Immediately killed.
