"When Pearson, the English contractor,
took hold of this road It was simply two

"On the Pacific side Is a continuous wind
and dust storm most of the year, with little
rain, and this condition prevails to the
divide, about seventy-five miles from tha

Mr. Thompson said he waa enjoying the
best of health and his looks bore out his
statement.

ruary 13. will be the first day In Lent and

Wednesday, so called . on account of the
olden custom of worshipers sprinkling;
; themselves with ashes aa a symbol of peni
tence, and the wearing of garments of
simple fabric and deslg-n.
The Ienten season Is observed the world
over by Roman catholics and Episco
palians particularly, the observance taking
the form of fasting and abstemious living.
Services are held throughout the aeason of
Lent and In Omaha the various Catholic
and Episcopal churches will have the usual
services. . 1
The Lenten season thla year will end on
'Good Friday, March 29, with Raster Sunday
observance two days later, on which latter
flay the faithful rise to God In grace.
For the guidance of Its adherents ' the
Episcopal prayer book notes: "When ye
fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad
'countenance; for they dl'flgure their faces
that they may appear unto men to fast."

tom of sprinkling the ashes of burnt palm
leaves upon the penitent Services will he
held every morning and evening in most
of the Episcopal churches.

Wednesday and flood Friday, there are

things and magnify the spirit. These Bun
days are referred to as feast days, while
the forty days are fast days.

The volunteers of America closed their
go.pel services at 117 North Fifteenth
street Sunday night and have rented the
ground floor at 60S South Thirteenth street.

at o'clock. After tonight the gospel
service will be held at the same hour and
the Sunday school at 11 o'olock each Bun
day morning.
The Volunteers conducted their gospel
'work at 117 North Fifteenth street for the
last seven years, tut had to move at thia
time on account of the erection of the
V&loa Paclflo building.
One feature or the closing service was
the enrollment of alx recruits aa full
fledged soldiers of the Volunteers of
America, Captain and Mrs. O'Neal, who
feave charge of the Volunteer work In
Omaha, Invite all active Christian workers

started this evening In the new hall.
