NEW TORK, Feb. 6. There were signs
of Improvement In the stock market and
either aa a cause or a result of this showing
of the market speculative sentiment among
the habitual operators In stocks was lees
depressed.
The reservation with which this brighter
sentiment la accepted la due to the conflict
with usual precedents In the present action
of the market as a prelude to an extended
recovery. Prices have gone down steadily
without material rally since the first of the
year and with gradual growth of resistance
and a lapee Into dullness. Usually the
progress of a decline occurs at a stage
where the taking of margins, the coverings
of atop-losa orders and the weariness of
discouraged holders brings out a flood of
urgent selling and a violent break In prices,
which watchful professional operators on
the short aide take advantage of to cover
their ahort contracts, thus causing an
equally audden rally. It is after this se
quence of events that the period of dullness
and waiting la expected, which precluded
the shaping of the market for a new move
ment In either direction. There has been
no such culmlnstlng break In the recent
market following the steady, although at.
tlmee rapid decline, and there haa beon no
violent rally to Indicate the effectual con
clusion of the speculative campaign of the
bears. The attitude maintained by the pro
fessional trading element towarda the evi
dence of Improvement In the market la
baaed on thla theory of market movements.
There have been symptoms of belated
liquidation In the market yesterday and to
day In special stocks, which helped to keep
alive the misgiving that Important sellina
of stock remains to be effected. In occurred
in Great Northern today and weakened
that stock materially In spite of the
stronser tendency of the reneral marker.
The special depression of Pennsylvania yes-
leraav waa explained Dy the newa thla
morning of differencee over a demand for
wax-e Increase from the trainmen east of
Plttaburg.
The moat Important element of the Im.
proved tone of the market la the evidence
of a revival of lnveatment demanda. Thla
la especially conspicuous in the buying out.
right of stocks In small parcels for the
Investment yield. Tha matter wsa brought
to attention by the action of the Stock
exchange authorities In ordering the re
sumption or me printing or transactions In
"odd lots" on the tape. Thla practice was
abandoned at the time of furious specula
tive activity when It was a physical Im
possibility to record all the transactions.
Its resumption now Is a sign In one point
of view In the diminished volume of the
market, but more significance la attached
to the fact that the number of purchases
of small lots has become so considerable
that their desire to follow an official record
of their purchases has Influenced the Stock
exchange authorities to comply.
rvreign opinion towards American securi
ties la being extensively canvassed and
enough of favorable tenor Is elicited to
suggest the possible growth of a foreign
demand for American securities to fol'ow
the present acceptance for considerable por-
ui rrcrni miircaa note issues.
The dullness of the trading waa partly
due to the large list of absentees, due to
the storm interruption of traffic.
Bonds were steadv. Total bhIas tur nla

CATTLE Receipts were again liberal
this morning, but unfortunately trains were
later, even than usual, dus to the levers
cold Weather and storms throughout the
west. In fact, trains were coming In until
late In the alter noon. While this naturally
delayed the trade, there was nevertheless
a very fair demand, so that tha market
opened In reasonable season In the morning,
morning.
Packers seemed to want beef steers and
ths market opened about where It left of
yesterday, early sales at least being In
praotlcally the same notches. Owing to the
slow arrivals of the stock It was Impoaslble
lor the trade to be active, but still there
was a fair movement and the cattle went
to the scales about as faat as pcsslbls
under the existing conditions.
Cows and heifers were also just about
steady with yesterday, which means that
they sold at about the same prices as pre
vailed before the break on Friday of last
week. The market as a whole was In a
good healthy condition.
Speculators and yard traders were
evidently anticipating a good feeder trade
ror the balance or tne week, and as a rule
they were out early In the morning looking
for desirable weighty feeders, which sold
freely at prices strong to 10c hlghen Right
desirable feeders sold aa high as li.OO.
There waa no quotable change In ths mar
ket for light stockers.
