Not even the reporter's suavity of tone
could cover the slight which unwittingly
had dropped from his lips. The weather
wlcard frowned.

scientific, I might say the Ignorant mind,
the Intricacies of my science," he said with
biting sarcasm.
The reporter was nonplussed, to say the
least Me stammered an apolsgy, explain
ing that his remarks did not apply to the
local weather staff. Mr. Welsh graciously
accepted the apology with an air that said
the Interview was at an end.
"Perhaps the groundhog Is dead," eald
the reporter, amiably, by way of re-estab-llshlng
friendly feeling.
"In the light of science your supposition
la untenable, not to say asinine," said
Mr. Welsh, keplng an eye on the ground
hog's residence. Suddenly something black
appeared, followed by two gleaming points.

hog came out, sniffed the air, looked
around for its shadow, dlsoovered it, gave
a snort of fear and disappeared Into the
hole again.

shortly.
After taking the position of the sun and
making other scientific observations, the
weather man gathered up his portfolios
and departed te his observatory, while the
reporter returned gloomily to his office to
let an anxious world know the deoialon of
the groundhog.

nies that the man who sat at the opening
of the groundhog's habitat was he. The
colonel is at home wrestling agalnBt a tight
grip.

Still Later Colonel Welsh positively and
disdainfully declares his utter nonbellef In
and contempt for the groundhog tradition,
pronouncing It a delusion and a snare. He
announces that he still sticks to the atmoa
pnare.

As a matter of fact, while the atmos
phere seemed extremely cold, the thermom
eter only touched as low as S below sere.
Thewind gained a velocity of thirty-two
tnties an hour and that Is what gave the
frigidity Its sting. The weather bureau
predicts fair and warmer for Sunday.

office of the Reck Island Plow company
has resigned his position, to take effect

family and will resume his old position as
traveler for the company In the South
riatte country, his son, Elton Sherd eman,
who haa been traveling aouth of the river,
being transferred to the North Platte ter
ritory. Charles E. Johnson of Rock Island,
111., will succeed Mr. Sherdeman as Omaha
manager.
Several changes In the traveling forces of
local Implement houses have been made
lately. David Bplcer, who has had charge
of the small goods line north of the Platte
for the Avery Manufacturing company, has
been promoted to the managership of the
company's branch house at Indianapblls.
E. 8. Jones, a traveler for the same com'
pany, haa resigned to become a member of
the firm of Loucks dc Jones, retail Imple
ment dealers at Falls City. E. E. Schroe
der, formerly with the , Rock Island Plow
company, has been engaged te travel In
northern Iowa for David Bradley & Co. of
Council Bluffs. C, F. Chase of Chicago will
travel north of the Platte for the same
house. C. E. Donaldson haa been engaged
by the ' Parlln, Orendorff Martin com
pany te travel in western Iowa. Frank K.
Gray of Council Bluffs, haa resigned his
position with H. H. Van Brunt and has be
come special traveler for the Raclne-Sattley
company of Nebraska.

hlpmonts of grain to and from the Omaha
market show aa Increase In wheat, but a
falling off in corn. This Is due to the fact
that last year a very low rate waa In ef
fect on corn until January 10 and the Mil
waukee waa hauling eut an Immense
amount of grain before the rates when out
of effect on that date. Oats also show a
most substantial Increase.

wind, forced the Ice gatherers te desist
from work Saturday. The second crop
from the lake is now being cut and shows
thickness ef ten Inches. The manager
for the Swift and Company plant says they
will have all the tee they want In ten days.
It would take exceptional weather to stop
them from working that many days more
before the loe is melted. January haa been
an exceptionally good month for the ire
harvesters, and it Is believed the mag
nates will have no excuse for keeping up
the price of Ice en sweltering humanity
next summer.
