ReporU of favorable weather In the southwest for the, tall sown orop was the chief reason today for a weak Condition In the local wheat market. At the close May wheat was down Ho bushel. Corn wss oft o. .Oats were HO Ho lower. Provisions . were lOiiflTVtC lower. According to the well known trade Jour nal, the wheat In the southwest hs) not o far suffered serious damags becsuse ot the lack of snow protection. In addition, the weather bureau predicted snow to nlnht for Kansas and Nebraska. These re ports Induced free selling of wheat to tbe last half of the session ana Drought sdoui a sham decline. Sentiment In the wheat pit was bearish all day, but during the first hour prices held steady on a fair da piand by shorts. The greater part of the news wss ravoraDie to me Dears, onip ments from Argentina during the week were (00,000 bu. In excess of ' estimates, whllo the exports from this country for the same period wera only l.kwO bu., against t,3&.000 bt), lsst week. Primary receipts wers SA 0W bu., against 3M.0U0 bu. ths same day laat year. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago re ported receipts of 111 cars, against 1IU cars last woek and 170 cars a year ago. With the exceptlops f a moderate ad vance soon sfter th6 opening, ths corn mar ket was Inclined to weakjieas all dy. Ths heaviness of wheat was the principal de preaalng Influence. Pit traders In cash houses were the chief 'sellers, and the greater part of the offerings was taken by commission houses. lcal reoelpts were liberal, and more than CVJO cars are expeoied tomorrow. The market closed easy. May opened a shade to Ho lower at 46o to 4Vts;. sold up to 4tfT4H7c and then de clined to 461M-t6c. The close was,st 46o. Feb. l.-Buslness at the Stock exchange had proceeded not more than ten minutes todsy when It became manifest to the brokers on the floor that no Important volume of buying orders waa present at the recovered price level. An almost Immediate resctlon followed. Then came a pause of dull dealings and hesita tion to perceive whether the banking In terests which sjpported the msrket yestsr dny were disposed to resume their buying to prevent a renewed decline. No such ef forts were discovered. The marketing of stocks was thereupon resumed and the upply streamed steadily Into tho market for the rest of the day. The bear operators oougnt at occasional stages or tne aeciine to cover short contracts. These operations caused a few checks to the decline and rallies of varying force, the most Im portant In ths flnsT hour. Speculstlve hold ers of stocks were forced to the conclusion that the best judgment was acquiescent In the readjustment going on as a necessary process to bring about a basis for securi ties from which appeal can be made suc cessfully to capital to come In again for Investment. ' The loss in cash by the banks indicated by the known movement of money for the week is aue 10 government operations, in cluding payment of a Central Pacific note due to the government on February 1, and tne withdrawal ot government deposits from the banks. On the regular express movement with the Interior the banks have falned, but the Indicated net loss Is less han 32,000,000. Intimations from Washington conveyed the Impression that the treasury's offer for redemption of 310,000,000 of United States 4s of 1H07 made In December waa still open, hsving been taken advantage of at that time to only a small extent. The encasement of 3500. too In gold In London today for IniDort showed that ex change Is at a profitable level for auch an operation and next Monday' gold arrivals in tendon are expected to yield an aoai tlonsl sum for New York account. The condition of the local money market Is of less account to the speculative outlook. It Is believed, than the question of a demand aoroaa .lor American capital issues, ku mors were current today of further In tended note issues. It was denied that fa vorable conditions In the securities market would Imply additional offerings of such notes. The a Dedal weakneas of American Bmoltlng and Pennsylvania was connected with such rumors.
