tvery line today wu characterised by a
briskness of tract at th opening, and It
continued, with ghort Inlet rupttons,
tnroughnut th day. A billiard in the
nortnwest decreased stocks In th notth-

strength at th mart. There was a de-
dine on heavy selling by professional pit
iraucis, dui mis waa counteracted Boon by
anon covering. The clou on May wa aa
ven cent above yesterday.
There ww a large volume of trad In
corn and a good demand for oata, though
unenngs. m ma latter were light. Ke-
celpts of both are light, owing to recent
imu weauier, ana in tendency or the casn
market Is higher. The option market
closed Ho better than vesterdav.
Primary wheat receipts were 25,000 bush
els and shipments 2&6,M bushels, against
receipts last year of 6U.0W bushels and
shipments of 200.000 bushala. Corn 1-eoelDts

Liverpool closed WoW higher on wheat
nq t'aja higher on corn.
The advance In oata haa brought out In'
sreased offerings from the country, pur
chases yesterday being quite large. The
high prices on the call have also Increased
offerings from th country and cash hand
lers are getting more oats and of better
quality than they have of lata. It looks as
thouah th Door oata hare been marketed
and the good oata held back and now the
latter are being sold by country elevators
and some liberal slxed lots have been
bought to arrive.

Bmall local receipts and higher prices at

(
NEW YORK, Jan. 23 There was a fur
Iher decline in the activity of stocks today,
the total dealings bearing no larger pro
portion to those of yesterday than did
those of yesterday to the active market
of Monday. The character of the deal
ings was little changed. The professional
operations again seemed to make up prac
tically all of the aeailngs. Also mese op
erations were followed without any show
of firm conviotlons and constant stinting
by traders kept values In an unsiame con
dition that made the market closely re
semble that of the day before.
The early decline in sympatny wun me
Hill stocks elicited Supporting orders of the
kind that have made th bears grow timid
and which gave oolor to suppositions that
an active accumulation of stocks has been
going on with a desire to avoid violent
price fluctuations. The movement in the
Hill stocks was a direct response to the
judlclsl upholding of the contention of the
Minnesota state authorities that consent
of the Stats Railroad commission was re
quired for the proposed issue or new ureii
Northern stock. The officials of the rail
road were not disposed to comment on the
decision In the absence of Its full text,
but the opinion In the stock market Inclined
to the view that a material obstacle had
been encountered In the way of proposed
plans for raising new capital. The com
panion movement in Northern Pacific rep-,
resented the view that Its proposed stock
Increase might be opposed by similar meas
ures, while the marked contrast in mo
upward movement of St. Paul was caused
by the speculative assumption that the
quick manner of completing Its stock Issue
had forestalled such probable hindrance.
It was a belter widely aeia at me time oi
the St. Paul Issue that the abruptness ot
the methods by which It was carried out
was due. to c desire to avoid any such com
plication. Another target for attack was
Canadian Pacific, which was sold largely
for foreign account. Some apprenension
of any. addition to outstanding stock had
a part In Its depression, out an overex
tended speculative position in tne sioca
was given the responsibility for most of lis
depression.
The sympathetic enect oi mis movmnein.
was again moderate, ouisiae oi me im
mediate allied group. General conditions
were given little attention. Money con
tinued to work easier, but tne terms at
which railroad carpnrations are seiung
notes to run for periods of several years,
which make the interest rate to maturity
run to 6 rer cent and upwards, detract
from the effects of the .relaxing moneys. A
feature of the money market Is the Im
proved demard that haa sprung up for
commercial paper, which has resulted In a
reduction to rates to w tor prime graucs.
Discounts in Berlin receded today. The
fore I en exchange market here was . but
little changed. The operations of the sub
treasury continue to yield a liberal addi
tion to the bank reserves, the gnin since
the last bank statement now amounting to
t.,,.3B6.0fiO. Today's fluctuations were as
various as those of yesterday, but the clos
ing found a rally In progress Instead of a
reaction, as on yesterday. Net gains pre
dominate tcday where declines were the
rulo at the preceding close.

trading In the sheep ham was a dull as
It whs on the opening tnis morning. He
celpts were again liberal and consisted
largely of ewes, the same as yesterday and
day before. It was very easy to under
stand tho cause of the lack of activity to
the trade. As noted yesterday, buyers have
been tilled up on ewes until they had very
little need for additional supplies. The
result was that sellers found It not so
much a matter of price as of getting sonio
one to look at their holdings. The ques
tion, "would you look at a nice bunch t
ewes," was generally met by the reply,
"not now."
Parkers all seemed to want a few weth
ers and yearlings and the few loads of
that kind offered generally sold In fair
season and without much difficulty. As to
prices, the feeling waa weak, even on that
kind, and while some sellers thought they
got out about steady, others felt that their
sales were lower.
Uood lambs were also In fair demand
and strictly good killers sold as high as
27.60. which whs as high as anytldng
brought yesterday or the day before.
It would be well for shippers to under
stand from the above that it Is necessitry
to send In fewer ewes during the remainder
of the week. The continued heavy mark't
Ing of ewes has filled the packets up an I
should receipts continue large it would
be a ery difficult matter to prevent a
serious break In values.
At the time of cloning this report there
were still a numlver of sheep remaining
unsold on some of which very low bids
were placed, while others were without a
bid at all. A bunch of good lambs that
arrived late sold at 17.26, as sgalnst 27. 60
for identically the same stuff yesterday
and Monday.

CATTLE Cattle have been coming most
too fast this week, but fortunately the
weather haa been cold, ao that packers were
enabled to take care of them In pretty
good shape. This morning,' however, with
additional large receipts, packers seemed
to feel that prices ought to be lower and
they started out right at the beginning,
bidding generally 10c lower than yester
day's market on fat steers as well as on
cows and heifers. Sellers, however, were
fiolntlng to the fact that receipts, while
arge, were no heavier than they have
been on previous weeks, and as a rule m:tde
a hard struggle to maintain values. The
result was a slow opening and a dull trade,
which was further Increased by the fact
that over hslf the receipts did not arrive
until well along toward midday. In the
end. however, the most of the cattle sold
with prices anywhere from weak to 10c
lower than yesterday.
Good feeders were scarce again today and
the market very strong. Feeders are buy
ing a good many warmed up cattle, paying
occasionally better than 65.00 for such as
suit them. While good weighty feeders are
In such active demand and prices are so
strong, the market on light stockers Is
slow and lower.
