CHICAGO GRAIN A BID PROVISIONS
Featares of the Trad la at and Cloelaa
Prlees oa Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, Jan. tl. A reported strike In
Argentina and unfavorable weather for
the crop In southern Russia created a
strong tone at the close of the local wheat
market today. The May delivery closed at
an advance of Ho. Com was up 4t4o
oats were up 4$4C Provisions were 6
10c higher.
The wheat market opened Arm in sympa
thy with a moderate advance at Liver
pool. The failure of the predicted cold
wave In the southwest caused some weak
ness despite the fact that weekly statis
tics were favorable to the bulla The main
items in these statistics were a decrease
of 584,000 bushels In the amount of bread
stuffs on orean passage and the amallneaa
of the world'a ahlpments. the total move
ment being placed at 7,616,000 bushels, al
most 1,000.000 bushels lens than the esti
mated amount. The market acquired fresh
atrength from a report that a serious
strike la in progress at Rosario, and on
that account wheat exports from Argentina
may be greatly curtailed. Another bull
ish factor was the statement that the crop
of southern Russia has been badly dam
aged by frost. The visible supply state
ment, which, although Incomplete, showed
a decrease of 1,600,000 bushels, against an
increase of almost 2,000,000 bushels for tha
corresponding time last year, furnished an
other reason for the late strength. The
market closed atrong. with prices dose to
the highest point. May opened unchanged
to Ho higher at 774itj17Sc, sold off to 774
Fna and then advanced to 7W3784C. Tho
close was at 78c. Clearances of wheat and
flour were equal to 98,000 bushels. Primary
receipts were 664,000 bushels, against 1.03.
OiO bushels for the same day last year.
Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago reported
receipts of 386 cars, against 649 cars last
week and 754 cars a year ago.
Cold weather throughout the middle west
depressed the early corn market, but later
sentiment became bullish. In sympathy
with the strength of wheat and oata. Shirts
were active bidders In tha last half of the
aeselon. but offerings were not liberal. The
market closed strong. May opened 4(?f
a lower at 454tj454e, sold off to 46o and
then advanced to 46c. Final quotations
were at 4xVfi-464c. Local recelpta were 486
cars, none of contract grade.
With the exception of a slight weakness
soon after the opening the oats market
waa strong all day. There waa a small
mount of selling early In the day, but
theae offerings were quickly absorbed, and
on good buying by local bulla the market
. soon became strong. Shorts covered freely
late In the day. May opened a shade t
4"4o higher at f84il384o. gold orr to 87
4j377o and then advanced to R-Sn, where
It cloned. Local reoelpta were 330 cars.
Provision were firm because the run of
live hogs waa much smaller than had been
expected. The beet buying waa bv shorts
and offerings came chiefly from focal bulla

NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Market Opens Buoyant on But in by
UncoTered thort Interests.
RENEWED SELLING SOON DEVELOPS
Prices Yield, hat There Is Rehonnd
Ilea the Close and Final Valaes
Arc Highest of tho
Day.
NEW TORK, Jan. H. Conditions In tha
stock market were much confused today.
The markt did not maintain the buoyant
show of strength with whioh It opened and
did not even make a good realstanee to the
renewed selling which developed during the
day. The Inference wss prompted that the
upehoot of prices at the start was due
largely to the requirements of uncovered
shorts and tha higher prices which were
caused by this buying were taken advan
tage of to renew the liquidation, as was the
dire last week. There waa a buoyant re
bound at the last sgaln.
It was not a surprlss that a considerable
Ursiovered srart Interest should be de
veloped In the market when the downward
course of prices was once arrested and a
turn upwards effected. It was hoped also
that the arrest of the rapid decline of prices
would fortify the position of long accounts
in the market, so as to relieve them from
the necessity of recovering the commit
ments aa was obviously the case last week.
There was buying at the opening in great
vol u ma, which was attributed to the large
banking Interests and which was accepted
as an Intimation of a determination to sup
port the market. The time occupied since
the market closed on Baturday in a ranvasa
of the situation found no warrant for the
rumors of financial difficulties which were
In circulation Saturday, and there was sn
understanding about the Stock exchange
that some arrangements hid been per
fected for the protection of a number of
accounts which were ovchsnglng last
week's market. In the loan crowd also the
rates of a number of stocks which had been
most freely sold last week indicated the
proportions of the short Interest lr those
stocks. It was not apparent that the de
cline of last week had resulted in bring
ing In unwieldly selling orders to commis
sion houses, such as are likely to to follow
a Sundav Interval after a considerable de
cline. These various conditions combined
to awaken the uneasiness of the bear party
and prompted them to the active buying
of the first hour. With the completion of
the buying of this character the action
of the market became disappointing again
to the hopes of an extended recovery. The
nature of the selling In the Interborough
Metropolitan stocks had an Intimidating
effect on sentiment. It waa accompanied
by rumors that additional capital Is sure
to be forthcoming; from this new quarter.
On the other hand, much attention was at
tracted by a report that plans were shaping
In some of the railroad corporations to
modify their intended outlays for the com
ing year for extensions and betterments.
The New York Central was directly Indi
cated by these reports, which were without
official sanction, however. Such a tendency
was accepted aa promising some relaxation
of the strain on capital supplies. Ifut tha
bearing on the prospect for continuance
of Industrial activity at the present level
waa taken largo account of also.
Money continued to work easier and call
loans were made, for the most part, at 5
per cent or below. Interest rates on time
loans also continued to decline. Foreign
markets were affected by the expectation
that the Imperial Bank of Germany would
reduce its discount rate tomorrow and there
waa an eaaler tone In the foreign exchange
market here. The renewal of liquidation
during the day served to revive reports
of the necessitous scaling down of some
Important accounts of long standing and

CATTL1. -Receipts of cattre this morning
were fair, so far as numbers were con
cerned, but trains as usual were late, so
that It waa 10 o'clock or after before buyers
and sellers could get down to business.
Under the Influence of the good demand
and favorable advices from other market
points prlcea here were generally strong
to 10a higher on desirable kinds of beef
steers. While there was nothing choloe
In sight, there was quite a sprinkling of
fslr To pretty decent shortted steers, so
that while the top was not very high, the
average waa not so bad.
Cows and heifers were also In good de
mand and free sellers at prices that were
strong to 10c higher than last week's close.
While late trains prolonged the trade some
what, the offerings as a rule sold In rea
sonable season.
Speculators succeeded in closing out all
of their feeders last week and were all In
the field this morning for fresh supplies.
As It happened, good cattle were not In
very large supply and what there were
sold very readily at strong prices. There
was oulte a number of light and Inferior
stockers. which, aa usual, did not sell any
too freely, but brought at least steady
prices.

HOGS Hogs opened 8c higher thun the
beet time Saturday, or close to 10c higher
than Saturday's early market. The trade
was active at the advance and a consider
able proportion of the hogs soon changed
handa. The opening sales war largely at
and around 86.16, which was a very popu
lar price. Some of the less deslrsble loads
sold at f4.6i. with the better loads at
34 174 and on up to 3 0. After the more
urgent orders wore filled the market prac
tically cam to a standstill. Prices are so
high at this point as compared with other
markets that buyers seemed to come to the
conclusion that they were paying too much
money. For time almost nothing was
doing, buyers talking very little bettei
prices than those which prevailed Satur
day. The market closed about tVic lower, such
hogs aa sold around 86.66 In the morning
bringing generally 84 624 at the wlndup.
