Fellows."
The prodigality of the American young
man is a pertinent subject of every-day
discussion at the present time. Unlike his
sire and his grondsire, he Is not laying
aside his first dollar and beside that placing
his second and third, thus forming a per
manent foundation for a future fortune.
The average youth today earns and spends
with little thought for the future.
In Illustration, a young man a few even
ings ago, while dining In company with a
few Jovial friends, at the close of the sup
per thoughtfully extended his opened palm
to those who made up the party. "Since I
entered upon my preiant Job," he said, "I.
have drawn Just $869.15. and to show what!
a careful and Industrious ' man can do on I
occasion here is the 16 cents."
The speaker was what is known as a
"good fellow." He Is ever a welcome com
rade and has a reputation of always
"spending his share" when out with "tha
boys." Other than being a good fellow
he has practically no bad habits. He Is' a
man of strictly moral habits, and the
money all had gone for expenses termed
"legitimate." He was drawing a com
fortable salary at the same time, yet It
had all gone, and he had but a full ward
robe and a circle of good friends to show
for his time.
A Waukegan (111.) saloonkeeper recently
found, while counting the cash In his 8l
at the close of a day's business, a dolli&
bill across the face of which was written
with an indelible pencil, "The last of a
fool's half million." The tragedy of tha
sentence was ominous, and one is wont to
wonder how many of the half million sim
ilar bills preceded the last Into the coffers
of the liquor seller.
A boy bordering on manhood fell heir to
a sum almost princely. He left his horns
and friends and for two years lived a fast
life. At the end of that time he came back
to his native town broken in purse and al
most, oroten in neaitn. ue secured 11

heartiest commendation of his employer.
However, he had the misfortune to be
supplied with a surplus of wealthy rela
tives and In the course of time fell heir
once more to a similar amount. A friend
called upon him as soon as the news was
announced to congratulate him. To his
surprise hs found the young man, made
wealthy for the second time. In bed with
a shadow of deepest gloom covering bis
features.
The friend attempted to give him cheer.
He asked him what his trouble could be,
telling him that with his good fortune hs
should be wreathed in smiles.
"But," said the victim of onthrust wealth,
"you know what It did to me before, and
to think that I have those two years to

Captain William J. McDonald of th
Texas Rangers, who has been made the
target for shats of ridicule and censure
from Senator Foraker, because of Colonel
Blocksom's comment on the ranger's cour
age made in his report on the "shooting
up" of Brownsville, Tex., by negro troops,
is one of the most remarkable characters
in the southwest.
Mors than twenty years ago hs became
a captain in the ranger servlos. and in
the time elapsed since he has had mora
than fifty gun fights. He has been "shot
full of holes" several times, but today Is
wiry, vigorous and keen on the scent of a
fight.
