Persons Interested In the business of ad vertising attended a dinner given at the Commercial club rooms Thursday evening by the Omaha 'Retail Advertisers' associa tion. Three subjects had been chosen for which papers were prepared In advanoa by members of the organization whose names were not snnounced and were read, as fol lows: "Omaha Retail Advertising Laat Sunday's Pspers A . Criticism," "Who Reads Advertising?" and 'The Popular Confusion of Charity and Advertising." These subjects called forth some very In teresting and lively discussions, particu larly the last paper. The drain on the mer chant for contributions to charity In the form of program and similar advertising Is enormous. With one exception every merchant present acknowledged that thev felt that these forced contributions. In the gulte of advertising, should be stopped and contributions to charity put on a charity basis and not on an advertising basis. After sa excellent dinner by Mr. Pryor, the Commercial olub chef, tha free discus sion of the papers and their subjects began over cigars, and those present found much of value In the remarks made. Meetings of this kind will be continued monthly for the benefit of the advertisers. PLANING MILL IS SCORCHED Thres Thonsnad Dollars Dnaaati to Plant of Abraham Itoseahcry. Is one of those serio-comic affairs that defy classification. It has almost enough plot to be called a comedy, and almost enough mulc to be called musical, but not enough of the one or the other to warrant desig nating It as drama or open, nor does It altogether deserve to be hyponated. It docs give Mr. Dunn a wide latitude for his own peculiar methods of funmaklng, and he takes full advantage of thee, In the meantime singing several songs In his cute little way. As Punh Swift he Is the pop ular youngster with a large bankroll who has conceived the notion of marrying a girl Just because he 'loves her. The fact Woman's Health Every woman may be attract ive. But it developes that she Is an heiress only on condition that she marry a man six feet high. As Artie lacks some feet and a few Inches of reaching this altitude, he de cides to attain it and annex the girl and the million. He takes a dose of medicine prepared by a qusck doctor, snd gains the desired height, but not till after he has married the girl and has been threatened wlh a breach of promise suit by a girl who decided to wed him. In the second act Punch and his bride surprise a lot of folks having a good time at their home under the Impression that the young folks are abroad on their honeymoon. Out of this grows another lot of fun that Is even more hilarious than the first Installment. Mr. Dunn Is quaint and quiet and at times seems serious. Just then he will break away Into some of his nonsense, and all Illusion is dispelled and he becomes "the little Joker" again, "handing out the laughs." He still exercises his prerogative as head of the company and kisses all the girls in full view of the audience. Annie Dale as Jeannette Slow, the girl with the million. Is charming in her youth ful freshness, and sings her share of the songs very effectively. Marie Giasler as Sylvia Sterling, who has the suit for breach of promise. Is also fair to behold and something of a songstress. Jean Salis bury In the part of Mrs. Slow Is a widow with a wink and one of the Jolliest widow songs yet recorded. Harry Burgess as a gangling country lout and Katherlne Nel son score, the comedy hit of the bill In their song. "I'm Going Craiy Over You." and Miss Dais and Mr. Leone have the best musical number, a duo that is am bitiously scored and effectively sung. The Boyd theater was well filled last night, and the people seemed to enjoy the performance greatly. It will bo repeated this evening, with a matinee this after noon- Billy Van at the Km. A country sheriff, a stingy money lender, a typical politician, an .Kngusnman, a broken down actor, a female detective with a face and figure no criminal could resist. snd a lot of other characters mixed It on the Krug stage Thursday night with that excellent fun producer, Billy B. Van, in the lead as Patsy Bolivar, the new errand boy at the hotel, who later runs for office. Billy B. Van is a name well known through out the land as a guarantee for a good show, and bis latest offering, "Patsy in Politics," Is perhaps as good measure as snythlng in which he has been starred yet. It Is to be taken for granted that Van holds up his end In the work of keeping the ball rolling and he is assisted by an array of characters, weird, fantastic, un usual and funny such as few shows carry. Clem Bevtns as Pinkerton Pinch, the sher iff with the pie plate on his manly bosom, and J. Hooker Wright .as Adam Grouch, the local monled man with the stooped figure and crawling attitude, appear to take pride in doing good work, "always doing the best they can," as is quoted by Becky Skinner, another unusual character, by ths wsy, who frequently repeats her words aa her chosen motto In life. Becky Is tho vil lage help and It she were given more to do In tho piece she would become ths rival of Bis Hopkins for public favor. Truly her makeup la a wonder and probably but few other thsn Miss Blanche Latell could take the part. The company is generously large snd nothing can bo said of tha female portion. MUs tweetmaa as May B.
