NEW TORK. Jan. 15.-Stocks wera lifted
to a higher level todsy In much the same
laborious manner aa (or several days pasi,
but the later reaction waa more moderate
and left something of the dsy's gains. Con
ditions were not much changed from those
ruling for some time past and mucn tne
same factora were given chief consideration
as factors In the trading.
The feeling towarda extensive new stork
Issues was shown In the pressure to sell
Chicago & Northwestern, which catised the
acuta depression In that stock. The rally
In the stock after tha Tnlclal announcement
of the proposed stock Issue was due rather
to the moderate amount of the new capital
than to any change In the prevailing opinion
towarda the tendency to dilute capital 01
railroads. The 26 per cent of outstanding
capital, which Is to be offered to stock
holders at par. calls for something less
than 125.000,000 of the 1100, 000, OuO which has
been authorised, and compares with rumors
of the last few days that an Issue up to
160,000,000 was contemplated. The stock sold
at the lowest late In the day. The general
consideration of the enormoua capital re
quirements of the railroads was stimulated
by the published reports of the letter of
J. J. Hill of the Great Northern to the
governor of Minnesota, containing the as
sertion that the railroads of the country
would need to expend 11,100,000.000 a year
for five years to come to supply facilities
that would meet the demands made upon
them by the present traffic seeking service.
An effect on sentiment waa caused by the
perceptible pressure on Amalgamated Cop
per, in spite of the talk of a probable In
crease In the dividend rste at the meeting
of directors tomorrow and the continued
strength of the copper market. Reading
waa a strong feature. In spite of reports or
the shutting down of several of Its collieries
on account of mild weather and light de
mand for anthracite. The principal strength
was shown, however, by St. Iaul and the
Harrlman stocks.
The downward course of lntereat ratea
continued In this market and there was a
decline also in the discount rate in London
today. The International exchanges moved
again In favor of London, the rise In the
aterllng exchange ratea serving to quiet
apprehension that Paris might be disposed
to recall the heavy credit outstanding in
London for that account. This country's
sgricultural exports for December, as re
ported today by the bureau of statistics at
Washington, failed to show the strength of
the Internal exchange situation fully main
tained. Except for cotton, the principal
articles of export all show decreases from
the corresponding month of last year, the
total decline In valuation reaching 113,
021.227. Reports from some of the Interior
money markets were of an easier tendency.
New York exchange at Chicago, however.
Is Inclined to recede and it Is probable
that with the decline In the interest rate
here there Is some withdrawal of credits
placed by Interior leaders. The gain of the
banks on subtreasury operations has
reached over 16,000,000 since the last bank
statement and the government Institution
was again a heavy debtor at the clearing
house todsy. The renewal of the liquida
tion In Chicago A Northwestern was the
principal factor in the late reaction and
the Irregular closing of the market. '
Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par value,
11,614,000. United States bonds were un
changed on call.

LONDON. Jan. . 15 -The supplies of
money were Increased In the market today
by the Interest and dividend payments
The demand was good. Discounts were
weaker. On the Stock exchange, although
business did not expand materially, the
tone remained cheerful and there were Im
provements In British securities, especially
consols and home rails, owing to the easier
money conditions, which revived the talk
of an early reduction of the Bank of Eng
land's rate of discount The tone of for
eigners was uncertain and Russians were
strong. Kaffirs yielded to realisations, and
copper snares were strong In sympathy
with the metsl. Americans were neglected.

CATTLE Receipts or cattle were very
large this morning, but trains were so late
that at 10 o'clock In the morning not to
exceed half of the estimated receipts were
In sight. As a result the market was pro
longed through the day, it being late In
the afternoon before anything like a clear
ance could be effected. It was midday
before the buying and aelllng was really
under way.
Owing to tha large receipts and the none
too favorable advices from other selling
points the. market on bof steers was slow
here rrom wchk to luo lower tnsn
, The fact that the quality of
e was generally poor and of the
calculated to stimulate free buy
ing added to the dullneKS.
Corn's and hfltfers were also slow and
generally WjKtc lower than yesterday.
The most active department of the mar
ket was the trade In stockers and feeders.
The country Is still eager for good. Aeshy
feeding cattle and the demand for such
was very brisk. There were a good many
country buyera In, besides local speculators,
so that the market opened early and the
desirable cattle changed hands about aa
fast as they were ready to be shown and
at steady prices. Inferior kinds of feeders
and trashy stock cattle as a matter of
course were slow, owing to tha number
here and to the dullness prevailing In other
departments of the trade.
