CAIRO. Jan. 13. (Special.) It Is reported
here that a Mr. Fox Is trying to obtain a
concession to build a funicular railway
from the buse to the summit of the Pyramid
of Cheops.
It has been suggested that the ancient
Pyramid of Cheops has been Insulted and
abused by generation after generation of
foreigners visiting Egypt and If this last
Indignity Is perpetrated It Is believed that
the travelers by the funicular railway will
come to the conclusion that there does not
exist a greater fraud, even In Egypt, the
mother of frauds and deceptions, then the
views from the summit of the great
pyramid. However, the fact that there Is
nothing except a dreary waste to be seen
from the top of the great pyramid, will
probably not prevent thousands and thou- J
sands of travelers from ascending either

tinues to give trouble and there Is ros
sldersble apprehension lest another serlotig
eruption takes place. A portion of the
crater fell In the other afternoon, causing
an explosion of ashes, cinders snd sand.
There were no detonations or shocks of
earthquake such as have preceded pre
vious eruptions. A rain of ashes fell over
Naples for twenty minutes so thick as to
obscure all views of the mountain.
There was some panic In the poorer
quarters of the town, the women beginning
to prsy to the Madonna and to the saints
not to Inflict punishment upon them aa
they did Just before Easter, when the great
eruption occurred.
Later In the evening the rain of ashes
ceased entirely at Naples, but continued
In the direction of PortUl and Pompeii.
