Small receipt In the northwest had a strengthening effect to day on the local wheat market, but the proflt-Uking sales nearly oflset this In fluence. At the close wheat for May de livery was a shade higher. Corn was o higher. Oat showed a gain of H'&c and provisions a gain of 7H'al&c. The wheat market opened easy, in sym pathy with a moderatu decline In the price of wheat at Liverpool, but sentiment soon changed to bullishness because of th con tinued small movement In the northwest. The market was also affected by lower temperature over the winter wheat belt, fears being expressed for the safety of the fall sown crop. Aa the session advanced, however, report from the southwest In dicated that little damage had been done by the cold wave and these advices brought I out some sales oy pit traders. Throughout tne aay tneprinclpal demand cam from shorts. Trading waa quiet the last hour ana price snowed a tendency to weaken. The market closed steady. May opened a hade to c lower at 75Vb76;)c, advanced to ibViC and closed at 767c. Clearances of wheat and flour were eu.ua! to 170,000 bu. Primary receipts were 480.000 bu.. com pared with 574.0U0 bu. for the corresponding ? The corn market was firm all day be cause of good demand by commission houses and cash Interests. Offerings were light and came largely from pit traders. Weather conditions were more favorable for the movement and local receipt were th tone of the market wa firm. The strength of wheat and corn wa the chief bullish factor. A leading commission house took most of the offerings, which came from scattered source. May opened un changed to fee lower at 36!yf3tic, aold up to 804. nf o and closed at the high point Local receipt were 109 car. Leplte a 60 decline In the price of hog th provision market waa Arm all day. There, wa a fairly good demand by com mission house for May pork and there wa some demand by Investor for lard and ribs. It was assumed yesterday that the sales of Southern Rnilway were due to the progress of the settlement of the estate of the late president of the company, but today there were rumor In circulation that the maintenance of the div idend on the Dreferred stock was in ooudi. These rumors, however, met with disclaim ers from unofficial sources. Northern Pa cific sold with the rights deducted and the rights also were dealt in on tni siock ex change. The shifting of loans is attributed In part to the neces sity of tianks to restore tneir reserves to tho 25 per cent level before they are free to disburse dividends, for which the usual period is now at hand. The trade was not very active. ome of the heaviest packers holding oft and talking still lower prices the same as they did yesterday. Still the hog kept moving scale ward and a large proportion of the early receipt changed hand In fair ea on. The later market was not so good. The bears continued to hold off until more urgent orders were filled, and then they had things their own way, closing th mar ket 2V lower than It opened. The day's trade might be summed up, therefore, as opening 6c lower and closing about TVtc lower. Representative sales: era. A fh. Pr. Na. A. .IJ .131 .171 Ik. Warm and unsea sonable weather Is alwy detrimental to th sheep trade. In the first place the sheep do not tke on flesh and are not In as good condition when marketed as they would be with weather cooler. At th same time the mutton does not handle so well and the consuming demand I greatly reduced. The whole eastern country, as wall the western, has been experiencing Just the kind of weather to Injure th sheep trade. For example. It was up to SO In Chicago on Monday and they had besides a very heavy thunder shower. This morn ing, with receipts of sheep lighter at most all important market points and with the weather decidedly colder, the feeling was very much Improved. . , , At this point buyers evidently were In need of supplies and were out In the yards In arnnrl eutujarin In the fTinrnlnnT.
