tee on roads is surprised and delighted at
the report of the year's expenditure on
roads, which was completed Monday by
Clerk J. J. Ryder. It shows that the dis
bursements during 1906 were mora than

SUNDAY IS QUIET AND DRY

"Only four arrests for drunkenness and
absolutely none of saloon men for keeping
open on Sunday, la a record for Omaha, I
think," said Chief Donahue Monday morn
ing. "It was about the most quiet Sunday
we have had In years and It Is evident the
saloon men understand there Is to be no
monkey business about the Sunday-closing
order. I had the whisky squad at work all
day yesterday, but every saloon, as far as
we know, was closed tight and I am hop
ing they will not cause us or themselves
any further trouble."
Four arrests for drunkeness were all
that were made during the entire day, al
though It was the kind of a day that
seemed fitting and proper for a stimulant
on account of the cold sleet It was even
hinted at the police station that one of the
persona arrested for drunkeness came from
Council Bluffs, at least this was he pre
sumption after an alleged expert had oar
fully analysed his breath.

Monday afternoon, "that a good deal of
fuss Is being kicked up over nothing In re
gard to the railroad commission matter.
The law submitting to th voters of the
state an amendment to th constitution did
not carry with It any provision for th
election of th commission. Th tii xn
were elected in anticipation of the adoption
of th amendment and th enactment by
th legislature of laws governing the rail
road commission. Until thes laws ar
passed by tha legislature ther is no rail
road commission and nothing for Its mem
bers to do. When the laws creating and
governing ths board are passed the com
missioners elected can qualify."
