WHY BOX RENTS ARE RAISED
Palmer bays Government Wishes to
Encourage Carrier Delivery
"One of the reasons for the big increase
In the rental price of postofflce boxes that
has just gone Into effect" says Postmaster
Palmer, "Is to adjust the rates mora
equitably. In all the larger cities the box
rentals have been Increased even to a
greater 'extent than in Omaha, These boxes
occupy a great deal of space that could bo
utilised for more convenient purposes for
the public Then again the goverment
wishes to encourage the carrier delivery
system for the sole purpose of Its greater
convenience to the publlo and the mora
expeditious delivery of the malls.
While on tha postofflce subject I wish
It were possible to educate the public up to
the knowledge of tha uselessness of the sub
station postoffices,' particularly here In :
Omaha. We have, as yon know, four of
these substations; one at Fortieth and Cum
ing, one at Lake and Twenty-fourth streets,
one on Vinton street and the other
at Twenty-ninth and Leavenworth streets.
Admitting that these substations are a"
convenience) on Sundays, they certainly are
not so on week days. By doing away with
them It would call In thirty additional
carriers to the main office, and carrier de
liveries could be made mora promptly by
thus increasing the general force, and
would be a saving of 82.500 monthly expense
in rentals and other incidentals. In many
cases as much as twelve hours could be
saved In the delivery of mall, which 'might
be very important to the recipient In tha
main down town office the mall is sent out ,
in a very short time after Its arrival, where
in the case of the substations the mall has
to be handled twice before It reaches the
recipient and may have to lay In the sub
station office twelve houra or more before

In his eulogy upon tha life of the 1st
Charles E. Morgan at Calvary Baptist

a pathetic Incident Illustrative of the

when Mr. Morgan went to Chicago ome
months ago to undergo a surgical opera

the ailment that resulted In his desth, Mr.
Morgan asked that he be permitted to offer
op a prayer before the anesthetlo was ad
ministered. The surgeons stood beside him
with uncovered heads as he lay on the
operating table and heard the patient say:
"I do not doubt that I shall recover from
this operation, but I feel as though I
would like just now to repeat that little
prayer that our mothers have taught us,
'Now I lay me down to sleep.' " I
He calmly offered the prayer, and, finish
ing It turned to the surgeons and saMt
"Now I am ready."
The operation was successful, but the
disease was too far advanced for the op
