RATE FOR CALL MONEY AGAIN ADVANCES Racoverlea Follow Anaoaaeeaaent ( Paaalaa; of All B a lane gkeet by Clearlagr Hoaae CToataaj Tob 1 Fleaa. NEW YORK. Deo. . Th lart dar of th year did not paa without a pinch In th money market and this was a con straint on th stock market. But more Influence on sentiment wss caused by th persistent rumor of financial embarrass ment growing out of tock market losses. Before the day was over It was made to be understood that arrangements had beea concluded to avoid the threatened em barrassment. Ths relief to speculatlv entlment was manifest and the ton of depression In the market largely dlaap. peared. Th recoveries which followed were more a matter of price readjustment than a response to any large transactions. There were some wild fluctuations In Reading In the opening dealings, succes sive transactions being mad at variations of a point and even a point and a half, an unusual fluctuation for an active stock In large volume In the market. Ther was pronounced pressure also on the Hill stocks and to a less extent on St. Paul and Union Pacific The wide decline In th Hill stocks sine the new Issues of stock were announced to havs Involved some sever speculative losses and th amount of thesa stocks held on margin proved much larger than was suspected. The ssvere shrlnknga In their market value placed some account In a precarious situation. The existence of a vulnerable position was suggested by the unexplained liquidation of the latter part of last week. A long delay In ths passing of the Stock exchange clearing house sheets today added to the anxiety and there was continued uneasiness and nervousness In the early trading. The sharp rally In tha market came with out any official announcement of steps taken, but was aocepted as a proclamation of a satisfactory settlement of difficulties. Tha gloomy and depressing weather was allowed Its share of Influence In the mood of the speculation. Ths atmosphere of the market was not a cheerful one for the ap proach of the new year. The market had to take some share of selling that simply represented closing out of accounts for the year. St Paul subscribers to new stock had to make a 10 per cent payment today and this added to th btirden of the prep aratlona for tha enormous payment of th new year. Th hope of a prompt relaxa tion In the money market after the turn of the year Is clouded by some of th possi ble complications. Advices from London Indicate th con tinued solicitude wLth which that center would regard any withdrawal of gold for New York account, after the turn of th year. London Is under obligation to return to fan tn resources advanced to tia over the annual settlements. A heavy de mand for gold for Braxlllan account also Is to be faced. In our own market also It Is recalled that th laat deDOslt of nO.OOO.OOO of treasury funds was fixed for return on January 20 for half the amount and for February 1 for the remainder. Tha 326.000,000 deposited lata In September also was with the Intimation that demand for Its recall would be made when currency beean to return from the Interior In tha spring. Installments on subscription to New York Issue will make heavy demand from tlms to time on future money mar kets. The queatlon of working towards eaae In tha money market therefore re main aomewhat obscure. The time money was again easier today and sterling ex change was strong-. The more cheerful ton of the later stock market waa maintained and the closing ton was strong and at th best prices of the day. Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par ralue, 81.722.000. Unltfed States bonds wer un changed on call. Th following ar th quotation on th New York Stock exchange! galea Rich. Lew. C!m. Adiuna BTXpraei 0 Amalcamated Copper 84,im lit HIV 1144 Am.
