persistent rumors of financial embarrass
ment (Towing out of stock market losses.
Before the day waa over It waa made to
be understood that arrangements had rxen
concluded to avoid the threatened em
barrassment. The relief to speculative
sentiment waa manifest and the tone or
depression In the market largely dlsap.
Beared. The recoveries which followed
were more a matte of price readjustment
than a response to any larae transactions.
There were some wild fluctuations In
Reading In the opening dealings, succes
sive transactions being made at variations
of a point and even a point and a half, an
unusual fluctuation for an active stock In
lr-e volume In the market. There was
pronounced pressure also on the Hill stocks
and to a lens extent on 81. Paul and Lnlon
J'aclflc The wide declines In the Hill
stocks since the new Issues of stock were
announced to have Involved some severe
speculative 'losses and the amount of thee
stocks held on margin proved much lnrirpr
than was suspected. The severe shrinka'!
In their market value placed some account
In a precarious situation. The existence of
a vulnerable position was augirested by the
unexplained liquidation of the latter part
of last week. A long delay In the passlna
of the Stock exchange clearing house sheee
today added to the anxiety and there waa

out' any official announcement of steps
taken, but was accepted as a proclamation
of a satisfactory settlement of dimcultle.
The gloomy and depressing weather was
allowed Its share of Influence In the mood
of the speculation. The atmosphere of the
market was not a cheerful one for the an
proach of the new year. The market had
jto take some share of selling that simply
(represented closing out of accounts for the
ryear. Bt. Paul subscribers to new sfo'-k
!had to make a 10 per cent payment today
and this added to tne Duraen or inn prep
I aratlons for the enormous payments of the
s new year. The hope of a prompt reisxa
