Features of the Trading; and Closing;

CHICAGO, Dec. 28. Tha comparative
smallness of the clearances for tli week
and a report 'that the winter wheat crop Is
In good condition caused a weak feeling In
the wheat market here today. At the close
wheat fr May delivery waa off
Corn waa unchanged. Oats were a shade
higher. Prcylslona wers 6ViO to 16e
111 her.
The wheat market early In the day was
steady on moderate buying; by commission
houses, which waa based upon firm cables,
small recelpta In the northwest and de
creased shipments from Argentina. Dur
ing the lust hour, however, the report of
a trade Journal that the growing mheat
crop Is In a satisfactory condition and that
a more liberal movement of old wheat la
expected caused active selling, which
weakened the market. The announcement
that clearancea of wheat and Hour from
the I'nlted Htatea for the week amounted
to 2,4'.i5,O0O bu., ag-atnst 4.400.01)0 bu. for last J
week added to the bearish reeling. 1 ne
total volume of trading was small. The
market cloved weak with prices near the
lowest point of the day. May opened un-

NEW YORK. Dec. 28 The restraining
Influence of the coming January settle
ments asserted Itself on the stock market
again today. A shifting of loans begn
early In the day, which ran the call loan
rale up to 18 per cent and dislodged some
holdings of stocks. The covering of short
contracts which was effected In yesterday's
rising market left that of today deprived
of that much demand.
There was evidence as well of renewed
pressure of liquidation In the Hill stocks
and the subscription rights for St. Paul
ran off In a way to argue III for the pros
pective demand for the new stock. A slory
was In circulation that a large speculative
holding of the Hill stocks which waa In a
vulnerable position had been taken over
st private sale and It was hoped that this
would relieve the stocks from the pressure
of liquidation which has weighed on them
for several weeks and the renewed de
pression was the more disappointing. The
long decline In these stocks gave rise to
disquieting rumors about the Stock ex
change today of damage which might re-
su t. These rumors were discredited in
well Informed ouarters and passed out of
consideration when prices Vegan to recover
late In the day. This waa after tha prin
rlpal money requlrementa had been met at
tho Stock exchange. As loans made today
carry over until Monday, which Is the last
nay of the year, there was a growtn in
the feeling of confidence that the year
end would be bridged without violent
flurry in the money market. The contrast
In the action of the stock market In view
of this tranquil condition In the call market
with the rapid rise in stocks at this time
last year when money went to 126 per cent
on call was the subject of much comment.
The most plausible explanation of the con
trast is the more widespread stringency in
the world's money markets this year, which
nan obstructed the efforts or tne nokiera
of securities on margin to secure resources
for carrying them In foreign markets and
thus to Ignore the fluctuations In tne local
money rate. The usual estimate of the
currency movement showed a balance in
fnvwr of New iork. a large proportion or
which was believed to be by receipts from
Canada. The subtreasury operations ab
sorbed several hundred thousand dollar
from th market, but the net gain of the
banks is estimated at between 32.000,000 and
83.to0.0on cash. It is likely, however, that
the principal effect of the preparations
for the annual fcettlements will be reflected
In the loan items of the banks. There was
no rally In the foreign exchange market
and there was a further easing of the dis
count rate both In London and In Berlin.
A surrender of more than 33,ono,ono In gold
to the London market by Paris was a
feature of the day's news. The London
money market as a rule relaxes very
quickly after the annual settlements have
been made and the year end window dress
ing reuuliements met. The present low
level of exchange points to a movement of
gold from London to New York as a con
sequence of any material easing of the
money pltuatlon In Iondon.
The news of the death of President C as
sat t of the Pennsylvania railroad waa
almost of no effect on the stock market
and did not come as a surprise, the fact
of his declining health having been well
known for many months past. The late
recoveries In the market were well held
and the closing tone waa fairly steady.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value, 32.om.0iiO. United States bonds were
unchanRpd on call.

Shippers ouKht to keep In mind the oft

CATTLE There was about the usual
Friday's run of cattle in the yards, but
that Is not saying much, as the receipts
sre never very large so ner the end of
I he week. The market aa a whole was In
fair shape; In fact, there was more life to
the trade and a better feeling than usual
at this time of the week.
Packers did not appear to have'all the
fat steers that they could use this week
and the market accordingly was fairly
active at good, strong prices. The mod
erate receipts this week has enabled the
market to gradually recover the loss ot
last week, ao that cattle arc now Just as
high aa before the break. 1
Cows and heifers were also In good de
mand and the market waa strong and
active on all desirable kinds of killers. As
a rule the few loads In sight changed
hands In very good season In the morning.
There were only a few scattering cars
pf feeders In sight and no material change
In the market.

Wool Market.
BOSTON. Dec. 28. WOOie The annual
ranvasa of the wool trade of the United
Slatea by the Boston Commercial Bulletin
to discover the amount of wool remaining
unsold at the close of the year shows a
stock this year of 94.402,046 pounds of do
mestic and 15,169,000 pounds of foreign wool.
This is to be compared with a stock of
7J.461.443 pounds of domestic and 34,414,000
pounds of foreign one year ago and hence
showa an Increase for thla year of 21,940.603
pounds ot domestic and a decrease in the
stock of foreign wool of 9,246,v00 pounds.
Regarding the wool market the Commercial
Bulletin will say tomorrow: Despite the
holiday period and the annual cleaning up
of mill accounts a moderately substantial
business Is being accomplished. Some
houses are experiencing a rather quiet de
mand for wool, while others are enjoying
an active trade. The general condition of
the market la satisfactory to merchants,
who feel that the steadily diminishing local
stocks and the strength of the foreign mar
kets sufficiently warrant a stlfTer price
tendency. Large handlers of domestic wool
are busily employed shipping the recent
heavy purchases. Fine and fine medium
clothing territory are still having a good
movement, the transfers including Wyom
ing, Idaho, Montana and Otah stock. Sales
are of varying quantities, most of them,
however, being of moderate proportions.
Prices range from T'yCSc in the grease or
6Kr70c for fine and 66tifec for fine medium,
scoured basts. Staple territory la In com
paratively small supply, but the demand
continues unabated. Fine staple Montana
sells at 25&25Hc or 70i73e clean: half-blood
Is moving steadily at 67tf7(c, while quarter
blood Is scarce and strong at 681&6OC.
Scoured territory Is also having a fair call,
at 7uc for fine and 66'a70c for fine medium.
Texas and California woola are still re
ceiving attention from manufacturers, with
resultant sales of fall Texaa at 22?r?3c In
the grease or 6o672c clean, or of Middle
county, California, at 21(&23c or 86366c. The
fleece situation is becoming steadily
stronger and In quarter-blood the strength
Is Dartlcularly noticeable. It belna estimated
tha.t there are no more thun 4.0u0,0iio pounds
sold In this country. The shipments
of wool from Boston to December 24, In
clusive, from December 27, Ii6. according
to the same authority, are Z.'7.7.".7."74 pounds,
against 2;fi,U7.S19 pounds at the same time
last year.
