Favorable Argentina ntwi, tha lack of

tha fact that foreign markets were closed,
were ail conducive to weaicneaa In wheat

Corn waa down a shade. Oats were un
changed. Provisions were 16m6c lower.
The realising sales In the December de
livery developed in the last half of tho
session and caused a decline of about 1
oent a bushel In the price of that option.
' Other mouths were . weakened by this
break, but the dejilinea war. . of .much
" Smaller" proportions. There seemed to be
small reason for the selling, except the ap-
f .roach of tho end of the month, whun de
Iverles will be required. A decline In the
price of wheat at Minneapolis also de
pressed the local market. At the opening
the feeling was steady because of covering
by shorts. Sentiment, however, soon bo
came bearish, because of an easier tone
In corn and oats, and the selling in De
cember added to the weakness. The market
' closed easy. May opened unchanged to Vo
lower, at 77(&7734c, sold at 78o and declined
to 11c. Final quotations were at "'ti
77TtC Clearances of wheat and flour were
equal to 773.100 bu. The visible supply In
creased 691,ouO bu. Primary receipts were
1,467,000 bu., against 1,084.000 bu. for the
same day last year. Minneapolis, Duluth
and Chicago reported receipts of 891 cars,
against 413 cars last week and 1,121 cars a
ycur ago.
The corn market was firm early In the
day on a fair demand by cash houses for
December and May. Late In the day senti
ment became somewhat bearish because of
the probability or Dig receipts tomorrow.
The market closed easy, with prices at the
lowest point of the day. May opened a
shade to o higher, at 48144i43o to 43c.
sold up to 43S&43V4C and declined to 4J'3
434o, where It closed. Local receipts were
718 cars, with seven cars of contract grade.
Oats were firm early In the day because
of a good demand by cash Interests and
elevator concerns, which waa based upon
the comparative amallness of receipts.
Belling by several large holders brought
about an easier feeling late In the session.
May opened unchanged at 86c, advanpsd
to 364c and then declined to SiT40, where
It closed. Iocal receipts were 215 cars.
Belling by packers and local longs
weakened the provisions market, despite a
lOo advanoe In the price of live hogs. At
the close May pork was oft Joe, at 316.60.
Lard was down 15c, at 8.27ft. Ribs were lOo
lower, at 88.82. r

NEW YORK, Dec, IS. The financial mar
kets were almost bare of Incident today
and trading In stocks was Intensely dull.
Trie aggregate of sales for the day fell to
a smaller figure than In many weeks past.
The London stock market did not resume
business, as Its holiday extends over until
tomorrow. This deprived the local market
of an Important supply of business. A part
of the American accounts have not been
settled yet In the half month, the adjust
ment going on there, and New York feels
an interest In the termination 01 tne set
tlement and also In the action of the Bank
of England authorities at their regular
meeting tomorrow on the Question of Chang'
Ing the discount rate. Their action Is be
lieved still to be 'dependent on New York
keeping hands oft the London gold hold
ings. Sterling exchange made a further de
cline today and a profit waa Indicated on
gold taken Into London for shipment for
New York, but New York bankers still re
frained from availing themselves of this
opportunity and the opinion persisted that
the ulterior consequences which would flow
1 ram sucn action made 11 expedient.
Prices were Inclined to advanoe In the
early dealings In stocks here. The market
waa free from any urgent pressure of l'nul-
d at Ion and there was sufficient outstsndlng
short Interest to affect prices In a rising di
rection, j ne money market also appeared
tranquil during the early hours of the trad
ing. From T per cent the rate ran oft to 8
per cent, and It was only later In the day
that the rate rose strain. The formidable
demands to be met by the money market
to effect the January settlements undoubt
edly had a restraining effect on market ac
tivity. The total of these requirements rune'
from $150,000,000 to $180,000,000, according to
estimates resulting from a canvass by vari
ous authorities. It la not expected that
this drain will be met without a flurry In
the money market and operators In stocks
apparently prefer to stand aside until the
reflux of these funds to the market begin
to make ltdelf manifest. The nresenon of
Secretary Shaw In town had the Inevitable
effect of causing talk of renewed assistance
rr tne money market by the Treasury de-
fartment, but this received no offlclnl aanc
loiv The subtreasury haa commenced to
draw on the cash reserve of the banks
again, the effect of the treasury relief meas
ures oeing exnauated. There was a pre
mium on New York exchange at Chicago
and a return flow of currency from the in
terior Is expected to set In soon.
The stocks in which subscription rights to
new stocks have been given recently were
affected by the suit of the Minnesota state
authorities to enjoin the new Issue of Oreat
Northern stock. The two Hill stork 4
showed depression throughout and their
growing weakness had an Increasing sym
pathetic effect on the whole list. It has
been asserted that the hasty methods which
followed the Issue of St. Paul stock had In
view the avoiding of threatened procedure
of this kind. The early strength showed
principally in thoae stocks In which recent
sharp declines would have served to build
up a short Interest. Thpre was Knn Ktiv-
Ing of Amalgamated Copper, Induced by the
advance In the dividend rate on Anaconda.

up to 87 SO, with westerns at 87.26. A long

A word of caution to the shipper might
not be out of place. As predicted In these
columns all the market needed to get back
as high as ever was a let-up In receipts.
Now that a good sharp advance In prices
has taken place It would be the part of
wisdom to shlD with moderation and let
prices stay up. This Is a treacherous time
of year for heavy receipts.

CATTLE Receipts of cattle of all kinds
were very light this morning, there not be'
Ing enough In the yards to make much of
snowing. Tnere were, nowever, luuy as
many as expected. Buyers were out In fair
season and they all seemed to want a few
loads, so that the market was In a good
healthy condition. Prices had an upward
tendency and such cattle as buyers wanted
were 10c higher. This was true of both
steers and cows. A considerable proper
tton of the arrivals consisted of trash,, so
that prices do not- show - up. so very wall
on paper.
There were only a few load of feeders
In sight, but they sold about as high as any
time. The fact ia there has been very little
change in the feeder market In the last
week or more.

Smoke.
Considerable 'damage was caused by
smoke at a fire at ths Antlers saloon. 818
South Fifteenth street, about 6:16 Wednes
day morning. The fire was caused by hot
ashes being thrown from the boiler room
In the basement Into an area way which
was filled with boards and rubbish. Con
siderable difficulty was encountered In put
ting out the blase, which communicated
with a wooden air shaft Into th upper
floors of the building. While the loss from
fire will not amount to more than 2100, that
caused by smoke will be considerably more
and cannot well be estimated.
