Realising sales In j"irn and oats had a weakening effect on .Bii local wheat market, the May option J closing at a net loes of -Sc. Corn was ort ViC oats were down c and provisions were from THt'lOc. to 22VrC higher. Sentiment in the wheat pit was bearish all day and the volume of trading was very Finiill. There was nothing In the news of the day to encourage the bears, and the main factor in the situation was the weakness of coarse grains. Throughout the day pit traders had wheal for sale, but apparently there was little wanted. Dur ing the first hour prices were almost sta tionary, the May option ranging between 77c and 7ic. Later the absence of de mand allowed prices to sag about Ho and tho market closed easy. May opened un changed to a shade lower at TT'i.iSc. sold off to TTVtV and cl"sed at 77V. Clear, anccs of wheat and Hour were equal to lt,00O bu. Primary receipts were ftfi.OOo bu., as compared with 667,nut on the corre sponding day one year ago. Minneapolis, Puluth anil Chicago reported receipts of 4!i3 cars, as against 5N) lust week and 531 one year ago. Selling by cash houses, which was brought out by reports of larger country acceptances, caused weakness in the corn market. Mav 1 opened a shade lower at 43Vi'43ic, soli on to 4.1'c and ciosen at me lowest poini. Local receipts wire 34fi cars, with none of contract grsde. Trading In the oats pit was active and I the tone of the market was weak. Many 1 small holders were Induced to sell by the f government crop report and there was also considerable selling ror snort account, iw. nuind was scattered, with commission houses taking the bulk of the orders. The market closed weak, with prices at tha lowest point of the day. May opened un changed, a shade higher, at Soc to 35"3"c, and sold off to 8"V. where It closed. Local receipts were 1"6 cars. Notwithstanding a 5c decline In the price ct live hogs, the provisions market mas strong all day. Shorts and local iacker were good buyers and the selling waa largely by longs. The supply of live hoga was below general expectation and It was believed that there was little prospect of any material Increase In the movement. Reading wa acutely depressed In today's stock market and the heavy unloading of the stock was unexplained by any special news until the announcement of the failure of a bullae with Stock exchange connections and a branch olttce In Philadelphia. It Is sup posed that smile lan,e accounts in Heading were carried by the house. The whole list was aifected In symiw toy, but to a mod erate extent in cutnparis ui until the final break In the market after th failure was announced. Traders Joined in t tie selling of Heading under the supposition that the heavy speculation was based on dlsapHlnt ment omt the failure t i raise the dividend rate on the stock. The Hill stocks, Cnion Pacific. St. Paul and Northwestern showed a renewal of the weakness which has affected them ever sinoe the new stock Issues of Northwest ern railroads was announced. The weak ness of the market was aggravated after the apearance of the bank statement. All of the expected gain In cash was re ported, but the meager loan contraction was a disappointment. A reduction of the loan account of less thun V-r .' was re garded as an Inadequate resuit to be shown after the painful liquidation wnich has been going on In the stock market during the week. The withdrawn! of gold from the Bank of England for Egyptian account was renewed. The approach, of tt-.n critical stage In the dispute over wanes of rail road yardmen In th" neighl .oruood of New Y'ork was a contributory cacse of weak ness. The selling movement effectually broke up the dulln ss of the early trading, which Is unusual on the eve of a holiday. Total sales of bond, par value. J'.,y. While the receipts for the week how a considerable falling off a-s compared with last week, they have been far In ex cess of the record for the correspf ndlng week of last year. In other words, the re ceipt of cattle this week have been exce ive for the period Immediately preceding the holiday. This has to a considerable extent been true of all other market point as well. With the markets of tho country overloaded at the season of the year when the demand la never very latge there has been naturally a eharp break all along the line. Regardless of advice to the contrary, the country has persisted all this week In rush ing In Its half-fat and warmed-up beef teers so that there has been a bieak In price not only here, but at practically every other market of 25ci4oc. Plenty of cattle have actually sold 5oc a hundred lower than the high time ten day ago. The country seems unable to learn thut meat consumers during; the holiday season give Up beef tn favor of poultry and instead of reducing shipment of cattle accordingly they ru.h them lrt faster than ever, with the result that enormous losses occur at this season practically every year. Cows and heifers have kept pace with steers, the market showing about the same decline under the Influence of the excessive receipts. It is hardly possible to show In quotations the amount of decline that ha really taken place, for the reasun that bet ter cattle are selling at prices formerly paid for those not nearly so good In quality. The best feeder have not shown ') much change, a the supply has been small, while there has been a fulr demand. Common and Inferior grades, however, have been pretty slow sale and are generally a much as 10ft 15c lower. If the country would only understand that the demand for beef Is likely to Ie vety moderate until after the first of the year and limit shipments not only tn this mar ket, but to afl others as well, heavy losses will be avoided. At first th trade was slow, sell ers being very backward about taking off, but still quite a number of load dd that were poibly a shade under yesterday's figures. Late on as It became apparent thut the demand was good the traue he came more active at about yesterd ty's prices, so that the bulk of the hogs uld In very fair ason in the forenoon. Its SUEilr Thet art ou fr:etj reotlt of sheep today, but the total for tha week. lilie showing a considerable falling off aa compared sv 1 1 rt the week before, Is, never theless, much larger than a esr ago. The mntket on kliiers has not shown very much change. It has been a sort of slow, about steady, but IndiiTerent kind of a nwir ket, The packers have wanted a few g'l sheep and lambs, but not very many. I lie demand lias not been at all urgent any dy and there Is not the slightest reason for believing that ttiere will be anything like an active demand until after the first of the ,ar. i'11'ckrrs, both here and els wher, have flllrd their coolers with as much mutton as Is likely to l needed dur ing the holiday season, and tne oniy tiling for shippers to do is to awnlt the cleaning up of the holiday poultry before bvginiiltis to ship sheep freely again. Fortunately a very considerable propor tion of the receipts at this point this week hits consisted of range ulieep and lambs suitable for fedets. The demand for good feeders proved to be very brisk and everything received sold freely st very satisfactory prices. It is very evident tlist any one having range sheep or lumbs that they can get to market are perfectly sate In doing so. as the feeder buyi rs seein ready to take everything coming.
