CHICAGO GRAI.H ASD PROYISIOB
itnrea of tho Tradlngr aad Cloatna;
- ' Prlrea on Board of Trade.
CHICAGO. Dec. 14. Lower prices for
nt the principal grain centera caused
weakness today In the local market. At
clooe wheat for May delivery was 01T
.i. Corn and oats were also each down
.v.'. Provisions were 2MKt)6c lower.
1 no wheat market was inclined to weak
tn -s. almost all day, and trading was of
very light volume. A fairly steady
i l-vailed for a brief period at the start,
but with all the principal grain markets
of the ITiilted States showing declines
prlcea have yielded to the general weak
ness. Luck of demand was also partly
responsible for the easier feeling. The
principal item of news waa the report given
out by a trade journal of St. Louis, which
claimed that the su.all top growth ot
winter wheat, caused by late se-dlng, has
been partially oftset by plentiful moisture
and moderate temperature und that the
frrowing crop Is in excelltnt condition. Pit
traders were the chief sellers, while the
greater part of tho olferlngs were taken
by commission houses. Tho market closed
easy. May opened unchanged to a shade
higher at 7KIV'(7S4c, sold off to 7S4c and
closed at !8Hc. Clearances of wheat and
Hour were equal to 4,4i,OA) bu. Primary
receipts were 682,(41 bu., compared with
MO.OUi bu. the corresponding day one year
ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago re
potted receipts of 61H cars, a:iit 643
cars last week and 5o7 cars one cr ago.
The corn niurket was weak, because of
selling by cash houses, an official forecast
of colder wi-ather throughout the corn belt
being largely responsible for the selling.
Local receipts wero somewhat laiger than
had been estimated and Indications pointed
to a still further Increase In the move
ment. The volume of trading waa small.
The close was easy. May opened un
changed to a shade lower at 4.1VcM3V. de
clined to 4314c and closed at 4:iHc Local
receipts were 2t cars, with none of con
tract grade.
Profit-taking by local longs ciused weak
ness In the oats market, the offerings
meeting with little demand. Trading In
generul, was qui' t. May opened a shade
lower to a shade higher at S-Vr!3K4c, sold
off to 3T.c and closed at Wu'l. c. Local
receipts were 118 cara.
Provisions were firm early In the day, be
cause of a good demand by commission
houses and local packers. Later the market
eased off on profit-taking by outside longs,
ihe selling being partly due to tre fore
cast of colder weather. At the close Jan
uury pork was off 6c nt flS.80. Lard was
down 2'r'uOc at f8.G6. Ribs were 2Vc lower
at Pi.4,V.

the proposed new stock Issue of the latter 1
would be affected by the question of the:
Great Northern stocks validity. The esti
mated value of the St. Paul rights equals
or exceeds the price at which the Great
Northern subscriptions rights are selling
In the outside market. As both stocks are
7 per cent dividend payers the Inference
would follow that the price of the two
atocks should approximate a parity with
rights In both cases .ncluded- A shliting
on a large scale of speculative holdings
from Great Northern preferred to St. Paul
would go far to expla.n the contrary move
ment of the two stocks.
M.itiey coi.tlnued In strong demand today,
the call loan rate rising as high as 19 per
cent and receding only after the demand
had sjfTered. Forecasts of the bank
statement were not reassuring as to the
re-es;abll hmenl of reserves to the re
quired leg.il proportion of the dep' slis. The
banks appear to have gained on balance
on the interior movement and $1,hj0.ooO gold
has come from Canada, but this was not
sufficient to offset the absorption of 14.581,
OuO by the subtreasury. With an Indicated
cash loss of several million dollars the
restoration of a surplus would be depend
ent therefore on a very heavy loan con
traction. Cross Influences seem to havo
been at work on the loan account,
large calling . of loans having been
made In preparation for payments falling
due while some extension of credits w.is
probably involved In other quarters In the
accumulation of resources for these pay
ments. Sentiment Is rather confident, how
ever, over a relaxation oi the money mar

tion that the present pinch In the money
market would be moderated by these Influ

SHEEP The efforts put forth In these
columns, as well ns through the medium
of circulars and telegrams, had the effect
of heading off sheep shipments so that
there was only one freh car reported In.
There nre. however, eleven cars carried
over from yesterday, making an even dozen
on sale. The situation was not at all
changed from what It was yesterday. It
Is pimply a cise of receipts this week ha v
ItMC been so large that packers have filled
up entirely and are not In need of any mi-
unless it might be a few
very good lambs. In other words. It Is not
so much a matter of price as of wanting
the sheep at all. Hence It was that with
only twelve cars In the yards sellers found
It almost lmKplblo to get a bid, buyers
simply stating that they did not have any
place to put them. Hence the market was
tt drag from start to finish.
As to prices It Is safe to say that the
general run of wethers and yearlings are
riKht at lo'a2c lower than last week, nl
though choice lightweight yearlings on the
Inmb order might be about steady. Good
to choice ewes are. 20c or 25c lower ant
somo of the medium gTades are probabl
as much as 35c lower. Good lambs haw
not been very plentiful at this point a 11.1
In consequence the market on that kind
has remained stendy, lambs yesterday hav
ing sold st the high point of the winter.
Other mnrkrts are suffering from vei
supplies the same as this, thus the Chlcag'
Drovers' Journal of yesterday says: "I'
the sharp downward turn In the market l
to be checked the receipts must be kep-
uon 10 amauer proportions. A good stiar"
of the mutron sheep today (Thursday at
Chicago) declined Vulfic and there wer

IjONDON, Dec. 14. In the market today
the supplies of money were short and the
demand was good. Rates were firm. Dis
counts were dearer. Trading on the HtocK
exchange continues to be affected by the
monetary outlook. investment purchases
were made only at moderate prices. Brit
ish securities, especially home rails, de
clined. Americans hesitated, owing to the
decline In Wall s'.reet, nut, after neing
marked down from parity, prices hardened,
especially Reading. St. Paul, Canadian Pa

CATTLE As noted yesterday, receipts of
cattle this week have been larger than
usual at this season of the year, showing
a gain over last week and lust years For
tunately the receipts were lighter this morn
ing The trutle, However, was very mow
and dull to that extent at least unsatis
factory to sellers.
Packers se med to be looking for good
beef steers and wherever they could find
something to suit they bought it at prices
that looked Just about steady with yester
day. Oil he other hand, tho inferior grades
1 were slow and the tendency, 11 anyiiiuitt,
I lower. The fart is packers appear to be
filled up full of the common to pretay fair
grades of cattle, and hence are not hungry
for that "kind. The market on the Inferior
grades Is right at 25c lower than the first
of the week.
What has been said of steers would ap
ply equally well to the trade on cows and
hellers, that Is, good kinds were alxut
steady, but the demand for the less dtslr
uble kinds) was slow and the tendency
lower. As compared with the first of the
week, prices on all but the best are not
far -from 25c lower.
The best feeders were sieaay vnis morn-

BOSTON, Dec. 14. WOOL The Commer
cial Bulletin of this city, basing Its report
nn the statistics gathered for the govern
ment, will say tomorrow: The local de
mand for wool Is broadening and grades '
are running from "B supers to "A" fine.
Staple are In good demand, but the lack of !
desirable stock Is a barrier to more Im

firm In regtrd to prices, owing to the 10..
strong position of the foreign markets
and the large consumptive demand for , 3
! wool. Manufacturers of all sizes and ' 10
clauses, realizing the comparative cheap- 3
ness of Boston prices, are aauy matting 1
new purchases and tiklng up old ones.
Worsted wools are well cleaned up for the '
