Last year an animated speculation broke out at the Stock exchange the week fol lowing the deficit. It is this precedent whlcn plays an important part In keeping up speculative confidence In the present market. Prices waered and leid-d Slightly today ufter the bang statement ap peared, but recovered nearly s i the de r.mes before the trading ended and the closing was only slightly Irregulsr. Tne Hill slocks were conspicuously weak and the Harriman stocks thowed some special effect of the judicial proceedings against the company in Utah. There Is no money mark'-t at the Stock exchange on Saturday. Loans made on Friday carry over until Monday. The ef fect of the bank statement was restricted to sentiment, therefore. Sentiment on the subject was modified by the linn contldence that some action would le taken by the Treasury department for ihe relief of the money market Monday. Movements were reported to be in propress In mercantile Quarters to urge the secretary of the treas ury to release government funds to the money market for the relief of restrictions said to b" out on commercial operations by reason of monev scarcity. Large shipments of wheat from Duluth was the principal cause of a steady feeling today In the local wheat market, although the price of the May delivery declined H& 'c, Corn was up Oats gained Wc. Pro visions were 12 H tr ibe to 40c higher. At the opening sentiment In tha wheat pit was bearish on account of easy cables, Liverpool closing at a loss of VtcVd. The market was also depressed by the te celpts in the northwest, which were strain lurger than for the corresponding day u year ago. About the middle of the day the market became more firm because of buying by northwestern houses. This de mand, it was asserted, was caused by the heavy shipments of wheat from Duluth today, which were reported to amount to 1.000.000 bushels. Later the market eased off on selltnr by local longs. The close was steady. May opened c to l4c lower, at 79c to TKWc, aold between 7n4i7'e and TSHc, and closed at 79 S Si 79 'c Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 7S2.00O bushels. Primary receipts were 860.000 bushels, against 6!.0rtfl bushels for the corresponding day last year. Min neapolis. Duluth and Chicago reported re ceipts of Hi cars, against 701 last week and 465 cars a year ago. Sentiment in the torn pit was bullish and the volume of business considerably larger. Elevator interesta were heavy purchasers of May, and this created a general demand by pit traders. The mar ket was strengthened by confirmation of the reports of damage to the Argentine crop. The rloae was firm, with prices at the highest point of the day. May opened unchanged to a aaade lower, at 43"fcf44r, sold at 4J14C and then advanced to 4 4 '.-, where it closed. Local receipts were 12S cars, with i of contract grade. Oats were firm on a brisk demand by shorts and local traders, but offerings were not large Damage reports from the northwest gave some support to the mar ket. May oiened'a shade to He lower, at 35ic to 35Sfi3Se, sold up to 36lc, and closed at 3fi(j36VtC. Local receipts Were 111 cars. Trading in provisions wss active and prices showed decided buoyancy, despite a 10c decline in the price of live hogs. Local packers were good buyers of the en tire list and there was also a good invest ment demand. The small movement of live hogs wss the chief strengthening In fluence At the rlose January pork was tip 40c, at $15 75. Lard was 12t,lic higher, at 11.72 .. Ribs were loc higher, at 18 sO. J .HCKiS Totals ISO CATTLE As usual on a Saturday there wus nothing In the way of cattle In tne yards to amount to anything. The receipts for the week have shown very li;tle change as compared with last week or with a year age Il has been a (air run for this season of the year, neither very large nor very small. The quality of the beef cattle has been very poor on an average. The supply has consisted principally of corn-fed cattle that have bee n on feed only a short time and of the quadty usually classed as warmed-up. On some days there lias been a sprinkling ef range steers and a few pretty decent cattle of that kind have been received. The demand all the week has been very good on the pari of local packers, the trade be ing active almost every day. Under the InMuenee of the good demand and the mod erate receipts prices have gradually finned up, boms' a little stronger every day until at the close of the week they are safely h-ifloc higher than one week ago. Cows and heifers have followed along the same lines as have beef s:-ers The supply has been at no time excessive and on some days decidedly lighu while the demand has been uniformly good all the wec-k. Under such conditions prices naturally tended steadily upward so that cows and heilers are alsc lofti5c higher now than last week. Good feeders have been very much sought after uil the week and commanded good strong prices every day. However, feeders ! of pood quality were selling very hlgn laat i wec-k, so that It Is a question if tlic-y have gained ery much In price this week. Buy ers will all agreed, though, that they are I plenty high enough. The common to trie I dlum giades of feeders and the common light stin kers have not been so much sought I after, but they have at least commanded I steady price all the week. Oood to choice 'Slock c lives and yearlings have moved a .little inc. re freely than fur some time piisi land are selling clocer to good heavy cattle Ihan was the ifcue a week or ten days a4;o.
