CHICAGO CMAIM AND PROVISIONS
A
t
Feat a re ot the Trading? aad Cloalu;
Prlcea oa Board of Trade. .
CHICAGO, Dec. 1. Active deman by
cash buyer of wheat for December delivery
caused firmness today In that option, but
selling ' by commission -houses -caused
easy feeling In th future deliveries. At
the close May was off Vic Corn was down
'tlc. . Oats were a shade lower. Pro
vision were 5sjl6e higher.. -
The urgent demand for the December
option waa the feature of trading In the
wheat pit. Itecause of the small, amojnt
offered lor gale the price of that delivery
was at premium all day. Deliveries today
were the, heaviest for several years, the
total amount aggregating- 4,Wi.0"U bn. The
greater portion of the grain was put out
by large elevator concerns and mom of It
was taken by prominent commission houses.
When It became known that nearly all of
the wheat had been taken by leading
houses rumor of a big deal In the local
market were revived. This wa the chief
reason underlying the demand for De-'
camber wheat. News of the day was quite
favorable to the beans, the receipts In the
iiorthwent being In excess of those last
jtiar, primary receipts being larger und
cable a trifle easier. The market closed
Irregular, December being firm, 'while the
distant deliveries were easier. May opened
a shade to He higher at 7 HWi o. sold to
io and declined to 770, where it closed.
Tiecomber sold between 724o and 73Mi734C
and closed at 72"no. Clearance of wheat
and flour were equal to 36o,0u0 bu. Primary
receipts wera l.tea.OuO bu., against- Siu.wo
bu. for the same day last year. Minne
apolis. Duluth and Chicago reported receipts
of 701 cars, agnlnst 62 last wreek and 444
cars a year ago.
The probability of a liberal Increase In
the crop movement because of colder
weather had a weakening effect on the corn
market. Cash houses were the principal
aellers and demand waa scattered. The
volume of trading was small. The hiarket
loaed easy. May opened unchanged to a
hade lower at 43Vb4Hc to Hc. sold be
ween tio and 4oV'( .'' and closed at
Sa3Xc. Local receipts were 3S7 cars,
with Ut of contract grade.
Buying of the December option by shorts
was the feature of trading In the oats
pit. I-ocai receipts were liberal, 37 crs,
but this was 40 car less than had been
estimated. The market was steady all day.
May opened unchanged to a shade lower
st J4"o to SfkC'G. sold between St'Vtj
3l7ic and SS'c, and closed at 3i"c.
Provisions were quiet, but Mini. " The
greatest strength was shown by January
pork, which was in Rood demand by lions.
The 'market was strengthened by the steady
tone of prices for live hogs. At the close
January pork was tip luu at $14 6c. lrd whs
5c higher at ii.bu. Ribs were 7iHo higher
at 17. M.
Kstlmated receipts for Monday: Wheat,
i cars; corn, 142 cars: oats, izi cars; hogs,
39,000 head.

NKW YORK. Dec. 1. There was little
character to the trsdintf In the stork to
dav, the constraint on t lie speculation be
I nk attributed generally to the money
I situation. The bank statement did not
reneci as larae an uiroao on tub iifro'"
as was foretold, but yesterday's 27 per
cent money rate caused an apprehension
thnt the full result was not Included In
the statement of the averages contained
In the bank statement. The largest part
of the loss came late in the week and so
figured to a small extent In the averages.
Moreo or,, t he influences at work to cause
the drain are expected to continue In
force. The funds employed In making
December 1 payments may be slow In re
gard to the channels of the money mar
ket. The English money market, on the
other hand, showed the effect of the large
recuperation of reserves by the Bank of
England, and there was a sharp decline
in discount rates in London. Sterling ex
change raU'S here also were weak. Tho
j lestialut 011 Urn stuck market was shown
in tnu smaiiness or the aeniings ramer
than In any depression of tone. Dull re
sistance was in evidence, and soivie of the
minor stocks made sharp advances
amongst (ho lesser Iron Industrials and
the railroad equipment stocks.
The constraint on the market wa4at
trlhuted In part to a desire to await the
effect of the forthcoming message of the
president. The financial world lias formed
the opinion thut the extent of the recom
mendations to be made in the message
are pretty well inferred from previous
official utterances and does not look for
sensational surprises. ' Reading showed
some degree ef depression, which was at
tributed to the report of a decrease In
net earnings for October. A heavy de
cline In a favorite specialty on the curb
marker speculation attracted attention,
pwning to the prevalent apprehension that
a state of speculative Inflation In mining
stocks may have laid the way tor a col
lapse. The November transaction at the
Stock exchange fell to a total of less
than 2o,000, ouo shares of stock sold, or
7,428,000 less than in Inst November,
while the par value of bonds which
rhanped hands was $35,703,200 less than

ot cattle this week
as against 28,812 last
year ago. It will be
noted irom this that whilu tho receipts
show a heavy falling off as compared with
last week, they are nevertheless heavier
than a year ago. It ha been several times
remarked by cattle men that they never
knew a better Thanksgiving trade than has
been experienced at this point this week.
A a general thing the demand for beef
products shows a heavy decrease cone
quent upon the public attention being called
to poultry. This week the demund has hold
up remarkably well, so that although tiu
reoelpts have been heavy, sel.'nrs have
found it no difficulty to dlsisiso of evcij
thing coming, at least everything desirable.
Beef steers have ben free sellers every
day this week and tho desirable kinds, 1(
anything, have shown some strength from
day to day, so that at the close f the
week they are at least B'ulOc higher than
one week ago. Good catthi have been con
spicuous by their absence, the great bulk
of tho offerings consisting of common
warmed-up or halt-fat curnfeds, with u
aprlnkling on some days of pretty decent
range steers.
Cowa and heifer have old to good ad
vantage on most duys, and while there
have been weak spots, the general tendency
of the market has been upward. At the
close of the week cows are saiely lotilDo
higher than they were one ween ai-
There has peen a gooa oeai 01 acuwiy m ,
the feeder market this week, but the most ,
urgent demand has been for the well-bred
fleshy kinds of dehorned feeders. Buyers !
have been unable to satisfy their wants and j
prices htivo been strung every day. The ,
common and inferior grades, on me otner
hand, have been alow and dull most days,
but still steady prices have been main
tained. Representative sales;
