CHICAGO GRAIH A KID PROVISIONS
Features of the Trading ssd Cloalas;
Prices oa Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, Nov. 30-Small shipments from
Argentina were the chief cause of a firm
close In the local wheat market today.
Vtrtnl mmtntlnna for Muv wheat were a
;ythade higher than Wednesday's close. May
corn was on ic; oain were iiiiviin-nacu
and provisions were a shade to 10c lower.
The market wa weak early In the day
on soiling of the December option by longs
and commission houses. The selling was
largely due to mure liberal receipts In the
northwest and to the assertions made by
the Cincinnati Trade Journal that the win
ter wheat crop Is In good condition and
that thre was on November 1 an export
able sirplus of wheat In the country from
the previous crop of 220.(Hi.OOO bu. Early
offerings were taken largely by elevator
Interests. Later a prominent bull bought
Mav actively, and this brought out a
more general demand, which resulted ln
a complete recovery of the early loss. The
late demand was based almost entirely upon
the small shipments from Argentina for
' the week, the total movement being 816.000
bu., against 2.328.000 bu. for the corre
sponding week last year. The market
closed firm. May opened a shade lower
to a shade higher at 7o to "8c, sold be
tween 77c and "SH'nW and closed at
"Xc. Clearances of wheat and flour were
equal to 504.300 bu. Export for the week
as shown by Brtidatreets" were equal to
4. 2U0.0IO bu. Primary receipts were 1.710.000
bu., against 1.01S.OO0 bu. for the same day
last year. Minneapolis. Duluth and Chi
cago reported receipts of 1,054 cars, against
W8 cars last week and 770 cars a year ago.
Liquidation of the December delivery had
a weakening effect on the corn market
In general. The market was steady eRrly
In the duv because of small local receipt
I nml small contract stocks ln Chicago.
The prediction of a cold wave throughout
v the corn belt caused active selling about
the middle of the day and brought about
.' a eham decline in the December option.

NEW YORK, Nov. 30 The stock market
was ln a torpid state today. Prices re
ceded ln the early part of the day under
the atress of the pinch In the money mar
ket. There wu a recovery later to about
the level of the closing on Wednesday.
The movement was languid and uncer
tain at all times, except In a few special
stocks. The Hill stocks showed aggressive
strength and the advance was an Inxtni
ment in tlie recovery ln the general mar
ket. Assertion were current which were
made with great posltlveness, that It was
already determined to Issue 8o0,0VD,000 new
Great Northern preferred stock to stock
holders at par. with a part of the proceeds
to be used ln taking over the Northern
pHcltlc'a holdings of Burlington. The pro
ceeds of the transaction to Northern I'n
cillc. It was also asserted, were to be dis
tributed as an extra dlsburrement to stock
holders of that company.
The lamentable d uth of th president
of the Southern railway was lha subject
of regretful comment In the financial dis
trict, but the effect on the quoted value
cf the stock of the road were scarcely
percewtlble. There was transactions in
Tennessee Foal at a price one point higher
than on Wednesday, although the rights
of subscription to new stock, wnicn came
off the stock today were quoted at 3. in
valuation placed on the dividend, of 88 per
cent In stock of the Pullman company was
Indicated by the difference ln today'
quotation of 190 for the stork with, the
dividend off and that of Wednesday, which
was 2Cr.
The flurry ln the money market seemed
sufficiently explained by the known move
ments of the action tuken In connection
with the heavy requirements of tomorrow's
settlement. The subtreasury alone haa
taken 83,703,000 from the banks. This does
not Include deposit with that Institution
today for transfer to Han Francisco of
$1.500,ono and to New Orleans of 3100. OK.
The estimates compiled from statement
made by the banks Indicate that the move
ment by express ha shifted again in favor
of the Interior to the extent of nearly
$2,00.n00. There has been an outgo besides
to Canada. The loss of cash by the banks
up to Wednesday evening is variously
estimated at from $4,500,000 to 86 0OOOUO. As
the surplus reserve stood on last Saturday
at below $5.0o0.0iO the Item would cut to
near the vanishing point without any
change In the loan Item. All the proba
bilities are ln favor of an expansion In
that Item which would tend to Impair the
surplus still further. The .easing off in
the money rate to 6 per cent after having
risen to above 10 per cent was the effect
of offerings by a single banking Institution.
The rate subsequently went to the highest
for the day at 27 per cent.
Stocks were Indifferent to the late tension
In the money market and closed very firm
at the top prices of the recovery.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par

IXNDON. Nov. 30. Money In the mat
ket today was In strong demand and sup
plies wer not plentiful. Discounts were
easier. The tone on the Stock exchange
continued cheerful oa the Improved inons
tary outlook, but buslnesa wa only mod
erately active, owing to the temporary
scarcity of Boating suppliea of cash, which
were required fur the conaol settlement
and for month-end purchasea. Consols and
hoir.e rails further hardened on Investment
purchases, while foreigners henented bv
Paris support. Americans ruled steady, but
Inactlvo during th forenoon, pending th

' Wool Market.1 1 '
BOSTON, Nov. 80. WOOLJThe Ora.
merclal Bulletin of this city, basing Its re
port upon statistics gathered for the gov
ernment, will say tomorrow of the wool
market: With markets of the world tend
ing upward, Boston ha an air of decided
strength, and although value are not quot
ably higher, merchants have no trouble
whatever In obtaining the price they de
sire. Beside the hardening of the foreign
markets the scarcity of suitable selections
here la areatly responsible for the hard to-
1 sitlon now held" by dealers In regard to wool
values. A a matter of fact, higher prices
are only prevented by the lack of proper
elections. Half and tbrae-elghths grades
are practically cleaned up and the supply
of ail kinds of quarter-Moods Is estimated
te be not more Uian 8,5oo.0u0 pounds, all
territory wools. It I claimed that the
stock unsold Is smaller than that at the
same time In 19U6. The prominent feature
of the week's activity was the sale of
1.6,10. fl to t.OtO.ooo pounds of staple Oregon
at 23240, or 70(fr72c scoured. Clotldng wools
are In substantial demand and many sales
of fine and fine medium ranging from 60.0U0

I mated. The majority of transfers are being
maue at am -to, or i.'uui ior nne ana w

tively. New Mexican continue to sell at

The shipments of wowl from Boston to date
from December 27, 18u6, according to the
same authority, are 210,467,827 pounds, a

-CATTLE Receipt of cattle this morning
numbered about loi) ears, which was a fair
run for the 'day aftei a holiday. Unfortu
nately the receipts consisted almoat entirely
of trash, there being a good showing of
all kinds except good cauls.
Partly on account of the Inferior quality
of the offerings and partly because of It
'being so near the end of the week packers
Wfio not especially anxious for suppliea of
beef steer. Still buyers were all out In
good season and while they seemed a little
indifferent still they picked out such cattle
as would suit their purposes, for which
they paid steady prices. There were no
choice corn-feds, the offerings being prin
cipally warmed-up and half-fat steers that
were, a little too good for feeders, but not
really desirable for beef. There was no
western range beef to amount to anything.
The supply of cows and heifer was lim
ited to about til teen cars. All of them were
on the common to medium order. The mar
ket was Just aouul steady with last
Wednesday, and as there were so few
cattle on sale It did not take buyer very
long to effect a clearance, in spite of the
fact that 11 was a Friday, when the de
mand for Blockers und feeders Is never
supposed to be very good, there was a very
fair Inquiry for that kind of cattle, the
good kinds especially being ln active de
mand and sold freely at prices that were
steady to a little stronger than the early
part of the week. The medium to common
kinds were Just about steady. Practically
all the feeders that were any good changed
hands very rapidly.
