Psal aad Meadlna Decline tnder Proltt Taking, hat Itecorer Later Hill hares Adrasrc Sharply. NEW YORK, Nov. 18 The speculative movement todav was more diversified than yesterday, although the aggregate sales for tho day did not exceed those of yes terday. The decrease was In those stocks In which dealing were congested yester day to a degree that give the market an unnatural appearance. The favorite stocks In today's speculation were under more, or less pressure In a process of profit-taking. St. Paul still held a load ing place In the movement, but It wis Irregular and yielded sharply at the out set, under offerings to reallxe. It eanift . up afterwards and Reading also made a new start to a higher level. L,am or consistency was a general comment upon the market. Stocks here and there were sent upwards suddenly, with nothing to explain the movement. Traders were convinced quite generally that Important operations were going on and that tho working out of far-reacning financial projects wero In view. They sough eagerly to get Into the current of tho movement without further know ledgo of what they might mean. The houses which executed, the large orders gave color to Suppositions as to the Iden tity of the buyer. Western speculative combinations were credited with very large operations In the market. The Standard Oil party was supposed to he accumulating stocks, notwithstanding tha continued heavy fall of that stock in ths curb market and the sensational atten tion given to the government's suit against the company. A reported hasty return to this city of President Hill of the Oreat Northern, waa made ground for rumors or Important pending ttoveiop ments affecting his properties. Reading I was subject to revived rumors of a coming ; increase In the dividend rate. The usual ; explanation heard for the rise In Amalga mated Copper was that it might be ex pected, as a Standard Oil favorite, to follow tha movement of St. Paul. Tho character of the day's trading waa falrlv Indicated bv lha kind of factors that are thus seen to have figured In the trading. Money continued to work easier. Only small changes are Indicated In the cash holding of .the banks for the week, as a result of the currency movement, but a large cutting down of tho loan Item Is expected to be shown ' In consequence of free lending here lor account of Interior banks, "he tone of the money market precludes any doubt : about the reserves havltffc been restored to the legal 25 per cent limit or above It. . The banks report a definite shifting of the ! course of the currency movement in favor ' of New York, the gain on balance by ex press movement being In the neighbor hood of 31,000,000. Absorption by the ' sub-treasury was sufficient to leave the gain by the banks small. The turn In the movement towards New l'ork was j of large sentimental effort, as . further J gains in the future are thus 1 Indicated. A resumption of the Interior I demand during December Is not unusual. however. The irregular tone of the latter mnrket, when protit-taklng had become quite general, was broken In upon by the, buoyant Jump In the Hill stocks and the market closed generally strong under this Influence. Bonds were firm. Total salea par value, 31.1)6.000. United States 4s declined 4c on call. The market as a whole was devoid of new or Interesting features. The market on fat cattle was In lust ' about the same condition as yesterday. Right desirable killers commanded steady prices and were comparatively easy to sell, but the common warmed up kind I were hard to move. Shippers are warned 'to look-out for half fat and warmed up , cornfed steers, as the market on thut kind is decidedly lower, while the cattle are slow sellers at the best. The fact Is shlp 1 peis are rushing In too many of that kind of cattle at a - time when nuite a ri..ul many desirable range steers are still com- im. no nem luvmtaijjjr preirr tne range cattle to the warmed up cornfeds. It fol lows that the latter suffer from the compe tition. , Cows and heifers sold about the same as yesterday, although the trade was not particularly active. That, however, la the usual condition of a Friday's market Good feeders were In demand at about steady prices, and while Inferior grade, were slow, prospects at the -time of closing thla report were good for everything of that description being cleaned up before the close or the week.
