NEW YORK, Nqv. 7. The speculation In stocks proved to be of a deculiory har-ai-ter today In spite of signs of animal, on in the ejny selling. The latgeat soar of nctivlty was during the first hour, and this waa largely under the domination of fr flun innuencee Reported apprehension of a further advance In the Rank of Knaland discount rate at the weekly meeting of he governors tomorrow waa a principal farlur. 1 There waa some selling out by the buyers of the last few days. That buying had been due to a hope that the election out of the way there would be revived demand for stocks. There was no sign of It this m. lin ing and the selling to take profit aggra vated the effect of the selling for London sccnunt. The supposition of a rise In the English bank rate seemed due In part O tears on the part of the authorities of the bank that the stock market was about to enter upon a new perlc;d of speculative ac tivity, with the probability of enforcing their demands upon the Kngllsh money market to keep It up. Bo far aa thla was a factor In the day's talk of a rise in the bank rate, the event failed to Just.fy the at pre hension, as operations In New York vere on a diminished scale after the opening burst of selling. It Is evident, however, that the Bank of England has not made satisfactory progress in the recuperation of reserves considered necessary before en tering upon the yenr-end requirement. Im portance was attached to a report that the Bank of France relinquished aome of Its gold holdings today for shipment to Egypt, aa relief for tha Bank of England from this drain might be hoped to operate against an advance In the discount rate. The only notable resistance In the market waa In the Hill atocka, especially Northern Pacific. The strength of these stocks was attributed to the old cause of an expected dlahursemen in some negotiable form of the beneflVlarv results of the iron ore deal. There wns nominal strength also In Illinois Central and in Chicago & Alton, which was explained by the belief that the as sumption of control of Illinois Central In the Harrlman Interest argues some project of closer relations between roads dominated by K. IL Harriman . . v The local call money market wss main tained todsy, but did not advance. The tone of the local money market, however, was strong and nervous and ninety days' loans were reported at 7 per cent, with the latter bid for sixty days. Very little mcny was In the market. There was some con fidence that tha Interior demand for cur rency Is nearly satisfied for the present, but the condition of the local money market for the Immediate future is be.lleved to he dependent on the attitude of London lend ers In connection with the next stock msr ket settlement. Reporta from Washington of a m se in prerieration for prosecution of the Standard Oil company received some i attention in the market. The demand for uncovered short, which', caused recoveries In prices, disclosed that bear activity m an Important element In fhe market's weak ness, nut conslnerahle net losses rema ned after the rally. The closing tone was firm and dull. ' . Bonds were heavy. Total sales. rr value. ll.788.OuO. United States bonds were un changed on call.
